Summit 447m
Ascent 200m
Area: Northern Lake District
2miles Circular
This walk is a very easy small circular loop of Binsey. It is the most northern Wainright with uninterrupted views north over to Scotland and The Solway , West over to the Irish Sea and Bassenthwaite Lake , and south towards the fantastic Skiddaw range.
This circular loop makes the most of the views all around Binsey and it is exceptional for sunset.
I was also very lucky to capture the Aurora Borealis later at night, with the lights of Wigton and Cockermouth in the foreground.
It only takes 30 mins to get to the summit of Binsey if you head straight up from where you park the car, ample parking along the road for approx 10 cars.. Starting at 251m from the car, one only has just shy of 200m of ascent to get to the summit at 447m so this is a perfect Fell for kids.
Locals make the most of this hill when occasionally it gets covered in snow and you will see many kids tobogganing down the Fell side.
This circular loop heads to Billy's rock on the west side then through heather to the summit , it is worth heading over to the other nameless cairn for the view north. The route down has exceptional views all the way over to Skiddaw.

Beautiful sunset Tracey and well worth going back for the Aurora. Stunning shots of the sunset. Great stuff. Cheers. Eddie.
@eddiecaisley5746 thank you Eddie 😊
Hi Tracey, Louise and I have just watched this one and what a great reward for such a little effort. Even without the views of the Aurora the scenery and sunset were spectacular. Loved Billybob on his hill, he was definitely posing 😂. Hope you are all well and staying dry. Cheers Glyn.
@glyndarby1715 thanks Glyn it's such an exceptional wee hill , I've been waiting patiently to film it at the right time x
Hi Tracey and Billy.
All I can say is brilliant!!!!!
Thank you for sharing it with us. ATB. Take care and stay safe.x
@yvonnebailey9973 thanks Yvonne 😊
Hi Tracey, Hi Billy, absolutely epic, just brilliant, who said Binsey is a 'nothing' hill. It's epic, we know that from our camp for Mr Ostle's final Wainwright. And now we know we all camped around Billy's rock it made the whole night even more brilliant than it already was. Haha
All the best and have a lovely weekend. 😀
@DAoutdoors I know I was looking out for Billy's rock when you were all camping on Binsey , happy memories on this Fell
Thanks for posting this Tracey! A beautiful video of a rather underrated wee fell!
@budvarone Thank you I've been waiting for the right moment to film Binsey , my favourite viewpoint in The Lakes. Such a cool wee fell , atb
Lovely video Tracey, such a beautiful evening .
@@143topline thank-you 👍
Wonderful and small fell but beautiful views. Did this with my dog on a very very windy day. Loved it. A beautiful video to watch fo a small fell that gives so much back

@garywickens7460 thank you Gary 😊
Love this Tracey. Well worth the return to the summit for those views. Awesome pictures just need a nice frame putting round one of two of them. Perfect 👌 have a great weekend ATB
@tonypilki3 thanks Tony 😊
Hi Tracey,
What a beautiful evening you had, no one else in sight for the most. It looked like a warm summer breeze with the low sun, I might just have mentioned before I'm a sunset-aholic and would have sat up there until all the colours had gone. Love the time-lapse, good job you didn't miss out on the aurora you'd have been kicking yourself.
Cheers
Graham
@gberish602 I know Graham it's a perfect hill for the aurora . I think I was up there for 5 hours , thanks and atb Graham .
Always love this walk. Great views all round.
@ianblanchard2406 thanks ....its a great wee hill isn't it
I remember many a time after a day of hiking in the lakes heading back home to Carlisle via Caldbeck and seeing the sunset in the rear view mirror. I always wanted to stop and not go home. Absolutely stunning video and the aurora pics were fab. Still never seen it :(
@margaretolover3316 thank you ...one day you will have to do Binsey for sunset , there's nothing quite like a Solway sunset. Tbh it's quite rare that you actually see the Aurora with your own eyes...at most I got some grey streaks across rhe sky but when you turn your camera on....boom
Hard to beat a Solway sunset. What a wonderful video.
@stevejohnston8254 thank you , you are so right there, a Solway sunset is the best 👌
Hey Tracey 😊 binsey is such a lovely fell, for a small on it’s just got a fantastic view. I remember doing a sunrise there a few years back and loved it. You got a fantastic sunset sky. And it was nice to see it with the heather out as well, looked lovely all purple up there. That afterglow was so nice. Haha brilliant that you went back up for the Aurora, fab photos 👏👏
@yasminshikingmission thanks Yasmine I remember your sunrise video on Binsey it was just a magical morning.for you.
@@Traceyattrill-Essexgirlinwild yes it was a nice morning. I need to get back over to the lakes again to tick some more wainwrights off. I’ve only done 3 I think this year 😅
Great video, super photos at the end too.
@@trevorjacobs thank you 😊
Excellent video Tracey. Binsey is a cracking little hill, we stay at Keswick Reach across from there so it's our 'warm up' Wainwright!
@markusvonkalksteinnaylor157 I've heard it's a nice place to stay ..its definitely a good location 👌
Excellent tracy lass Billy's rock love it and that sun shining down awsome views love how this full area is always windy as out this is why I've put skiddaw off for so long but will have to do it sometime hopfull keep it for next summer now or for the snow lol good show around up here with great sun sett back up 😂lol
@Butchyboysadventures thanks Butch ....yeah it's always windy on this one lol ...wish I'd had a swig of whiskey to warm me up ...I was on the Fell for 5 hours haha 😄
Hahaha pleased andy rang about that aurora it was absolutely brilliant you need to take hes drone off him that would have made for a awsome drone vid like @Traceyattrill-Essexgirlinwild
@Butchyboysadventures I know would have been epic ...i was just glad I had a slice of pizza and carrot cake and coffee haha 😄
Not content going up tonthe summit once Tracey, ya did it again on the same evening 😊 some terrific views towards The Solway 😊as ever Skiddaw looks menacing 😊 you were prepared well with pizza 🍕 carrot cake 🎂 & coffee for the Aurora & got some great pics, Wigton showed up very well under the lovely night sky🌙excellent photography on this vlog Tracey 🎉
@davidmarshall5596 thanks David 😊 I'm so glad Andy told me about rhe aurora at the bottom , I just had to go back up being only 20 mins 😄
@@Traceyattrill-Essexgirlinwild ha ha! Pity he couldn't have told ya while ya was still up on the summit 🙄 😅
@davidmarshall5596 yeah I know but just glad I got it , I was pretty cold by the time I got back to car but a fantastic memory
@@Traceyattrill-Essexgirlinwild yeah well worth the effort ya put in & captured on film too Tracey 👌 👍
@davidmarshall5596 thank you
Lovely video Tracey
@melvynholmes8958 thank you 😊
Just Beautiful! 😊
@@Happy_Hiker thank you 😊
That was just beautiful. It's my local fell and I've been up well over a 100 times over the years but never tire of it. As you say, for such a little hill on the edge of the N P the views are spectacular. The way you went up is better than just heading up the main path but the path from Bewaldeth up the avenue of trees is also a good one.
The shots at the end were breathtaking. Thanks for sharing them.
@gbfch I didn't know you were so local ...I'm surprised I haven't bumped into you on Binsey ?? Funny you should mention Bewaldeth , I wS looking out for that avenue today as they have closed the main road , I'm not sure where that avenue starts from ??
@@Traceyattrill-Essexgirlinwild Aye, Blennerhasset. Can see Binsey from the house.
From Castle Inn about a mile or so up the A591 to Bothel there's Bewaldeth on the right. Just past there there's the minor road to the left - sign Keswick Reach, - where you can park easily off the main road. Walk back towards Bewaldeth 50 yards and there's a gate on the left slightly set back from the 591 with the avenue of trees beyond. This is a public footpath which gives access to Binsey.
Just had another look at the aurora photos - you could win prizes.
@gbfch thanks Graham I will definitely try this route out ..I always wondered why there were always cars parked in that layby. Have you done the chimney route 😄?
@@Traceyattrill-Essexgirlinwild Used to, often, but last time I went, some years ago mind, the gate giving access to Binsey was padlocked - farmers eh?
Likewise, the old route up from High Ireby was a smashing walk but again some years ago the farmer blocked off the stiles and put barbed wire across them . Note to self - must pop round and see if the route is still blocked.
@gbfch farmers eh ....I've gone down to wards High Ireby from Binsey but there were cows in the field so I went no further..the last time I went past the chimney was 2019 and it was open then ...Dave ostle went that way last week but he would just climb over the padlocked gate if it was
