Jack played SS1 irons. They are actually FC4000 - Flame Ceramic with the 4000 apparently representing the temperature at which the coating was applied. The ceramic coating itself being a by product of space technology at the time. MacGregor also used a rocket motive on their contemporary "velocitized" woods. Sorry to be a geek!
TGIF!!! Oh my! Digging this club for sure. A work of art. It's clubs like these that make me love playing golf. Well done sir. I believe Ken Venturi had his name on several brands of clubs back in the day. Olimar, Rawlings, Wilson Staff SG 202 which look awesome!
Have a set of these exact irons and golf them at times. Great irons. 150 yards for the seven is a good strike. A joy to golf along with my powerbilt persimmons. I score just a few shots less with my reg. callaway x18 irons.
I do have a set (minus the 6 iron) of Ken Venturi irons, SG202...turns out it was a copy of the irons Wilson made for him. I have a set of Louise Suggs CF4000, probably late '50s. I checked Kaplan's & saw your club w/that back featured in the 1963, prior to that the back was different & in 1964 and beyond. I've tried the Louise Suggs, & like them. I also have a set of copper faced clubs (they were the transition between the Colokrom irons & the CF4000)...both are fun - once you get used to them.
My father handed down a set of these to me in 1974 when I was 10. Could of been a different year, but the look was the same. Stiff shafts, and by the time I was 13, shooting around 80.
I believe the set included a ten iron, which I really liked and would be more relevant for todays seriously delofted short irons/PW's. I played them once, they were my dad's which he bought used, and had to keep reminding myself to "club up", ha ha. Real traditional lofts, before the term was ever used, but very playable.
These are beauties. There is a full set going for $70 on Mercari. The seller has it misnamed as F1000. These are my favs. I play mine. People look at me weird.

CF4000 meant Ceramic Fired 4000 degrees. Had a set long ago.

Those were my first clubs. Bought them from another student while I was in college. Paid $50, irons, woods and bag. That was 1970

I am eyeballing a set of these with the original leather grips. Very little use. These were high quality.

Thanks for the review. Really cool club to look at. Tough to hit. Prefer the Haig Ultras.

I have a set of DX2 irons
They have that interesting shaped muscle on the back. I would like to hit one of those cf4000's
