Hello Margaret, I used to be a dancer and definitely know how to walk into a room. But at 74 I need a cane and that immediately makes me invisible. Not everyone has the physical abilities to stand up straight, not use a walking device or have other limitations.
We must fight ageism By being present as much as possible. I started my TH-cam channel when I was 70. And in some of them, I walk across the room with my cane. I have danced with my cane and made friends with many young people. joining book tube has made me visible. It made me put on make up again. I recently walked in a parade, the only one with a walking cane. But I twirl it and demanded attention. Ageism is very prevalent. I have been denied many jobs, even though it’s illegal. a community like 60 and me is perfect for not only ending ageism, but lifting us out of depression. Aloha from Hawai’i.❤

I was recently on a cruise and a woman with a cane was dancing on the floor. Everybody circled around her and we danced together and it was just beautiful. Stay gorgeous!!! ❤️

The worst thing that happened to me was realizing that I was no longer smiling when I went into a store or met people I know on the street. I realized that it is necessary to put more attention on ourselves, it is a way to love ourselves more ❤ Thank you

Good points. When I was growing up, to be heard I had to talk loudly and six decades later, I catch myself talking too loudly and I’m trying to be aware of how loud I’m speaking. Self awareness is useful.

You are so right; I’m 84 years old but am doing most of this already! I travel a lot on buses and I usually get on first or very quickly because I smile at the driver and he stops near where I’m standing. It really works! 😊

Yes, I learned about "walking into a room " quite a while ago. I go to large ballrooms to dance. As you said, walk in slowly, PAUSE, continue to walk with confidence. Same with walking into a restaurant, like you own it and know where you are going. btw: a friend of mine, much older than I am, told me a long time ago, never admit your age because people then treat you at that age. I always remembered that.

"I will try to be an example in a small way"
    Until my last breath.
I still 'wear' my clothes not just put them on. A smile is the best cosmetic.
Kindness helps others along. So heading to 85 "standards must be maintained"...

This message is RIGHT ON IF you want to stay and be engaged with people and life. Many reasons we slip, and these points brilliantly teach or remind us that what you put out in the world comes back to you (whether you like it or not, lol). Great topic Margret.

Margret, great ideas! Posture is my current focus. so important when sitting, standing and walking. I always notice what great posture little kids have. Good posture translates to young, healthy, interested. I've started going to physical therapy to help correct mine after seeing a picture of myself recently. One addition to what you said. Mimicking is good, if subtle, but our body lauguage must be genuine and not extravagant or people will subconsciously question our authenticity. And, we must be careful to not invade other's personal space. My personal space is is about 3 ft out. My husband's was much less and I definitely retreated when I first met him. LOL

Thanks for these tips! I was always extremely shy when younger, but as Ive aged that feeling of inadequacy has mostly faded away, possibly because I'm established in the world and really don't have to prove anything to anyone anymore. But, in certain rare situations, the shyness returns. Im not a small person and at almost 75 still stand straight and strong and walk normally. Also, my voice hasn't aged much. At a certain point, though, we all face getting old, if we live this long. Its not easy. 🌺

So right on. I’m 5’10 and forgetting how people see you is a mistake, one we are responsible for how we present ourselves.

Very interesting 🤔 i do think our projection is so important, especially as a mature woman , we dont have to disappear as a person just because we've aged 😊 As a older woman we have so much to offer.❤🎉

Wonderful video Margaret…..great topic. I did find myself thinking of the ones that I already did and the ones I needed to include. And not necessarily to fight ageism but to be more intentional and interesting. And make the other person in conversation feel like they mattered. It is good for you personally.

I learned to fake confidence and it works many times. I try when I see the meek one, to reach out because I know how it feels. When a sales person wont make eye contact I use my voice but sometimes if you can get it, it helps.I used to slink off because I felt invisible but channel my mom who was an old Italian woman who made sure people saw her. I see now it wasn't obnoxious, she was invisible to some and refused to stay that way.

Sophia Loren, now almost 90, is supposed to have said: "Always watch your posture and stop making those old person noises." Her better advice is : "There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love." Thanks for sharing YOUR mind, talents and creativity with all of us.

This doesn't strike me as fighting ageism, but, rather, perpetuating it. Being an interactive open human being in the world is something that we notice in people of any age. Hopefully, with age comes a maturity that does not look for external validation but is more about making meaningful connections and contributions.

Your voice always seems excited to me. You keep my attention. Love the two seconds when entering a room. I’ll use it. Also you can take 10 years off your look by keeping your chin up (shoulders back) and your ATTITUDE up. Thanks for these reminders.

Margaret! I had been searching for you - although I have been subscribed all this time, you for some reason had fallen off of my radar! So glad that you popped into my feed tonight! A welcome change from politics ( big election impending! )!!!
I always make it a point to walk as if I belong there... owning my part of the sidewalk or road... not in a snarky my poo don't stink kind of way... but just one of confidence...
And I have always done the chin on the hand; lean in...
I find myself also mimicking how someone I am engaging with sits- for example... if they have crossed their legs, I am mindful to cross mine in the same direction...
slouching is an issue for me... there are devices now to wear around the neck to signal is when our posture needs correction... I just happened to see another content creator talking about them earlier today.
Anywho- happy as can be to spend this time with you...
be well- sending oodles of love & light to all!

I'm still full of fire on the inside, Margaret. 🔥 Yet, because we aren't young, we become invisible. It really IS shameful, society's obsession with youth and beauty. When i was growing up, we revered our elders...getting older wasn't treated like a disease. Don't they know that, if they're fortunate, they'll inevitably grow old, too? Thank you and hugs! Rosemarie 🩷
