  • Ducati Multistrada servicing and 36,000 km service. Plus, we briefly look at the Ducati Multistrada V4S, Ducati Monster 937, BMW S1000XR and the BMW R1250R and introduce my wife’s KTM 390 Duke.
    This is the eighth video in a series about buying and ownership of a Ducati Multistrada and my personal long-term experience over 3 years and 20,000 km.
    The Ducati Multistrada does have some other important issues you need to be aware of, so I am going to cover the common problems, tyre choice, comfort, brakes and maintenance, touring, servicing, electrical issues, gearbox problems, modifications and the exhaust system.
    I am going to share my honest, straight forward review of what you can expect from buying a used Ducati Multistrada and the issues and problems I have experienced and how to fix them.
    I hope to upload 1 new video each week during this first season, so please Subscribe and press the Bell notification button (This will help the channel grow and develop), and of course you will be notified when the next episode is uploaded. Thank you, Carl
    If you have any requests or content suggestions about the Ducati Multistrada… just let me know.

    I understand the desire to have the dealer stamp, but just like with some car dealerships, they know that and charge for very basic stuff. Carl Harrison is an expert on Ducatis, running his own small business, and when he Desmo serviced my Multistrada (after dealers) it felt like another bike. Sometimes enthusiasm wins over dealer stamp!

      Hi Ian, good afternoon, yes I completely agree if you can find a very good independent technician, then it can be a very good option. I personally wanted to keep the "Ducati Stamp" in my service book even though I can do all the work myself. For me, it is to do with maintaining the value of my multistrada as here in Germany they devalue quickly without full service history from a dealer.
      Thankyou for your comments, would you mind sharing your location so other multistrada owners might be able to also think about your recommendations?
      Best wishes Carl

    G’day, I have also heard good things about the R1250R .It warms my heart though to see your wife rides a DUKE, my partner rides the 790 Duke and now I’m on the 890 Duke.All the best mate.

      Hi Scottie, thank you, yes she does love her little Duke I am hoping she will agree to come on the channel at some point and talk about the 390. She did try the 790 and from the scream I heard over the intercom... I think she liked it too.... just not yet. More info to come soon on the R1250R... it's good really good. But will I change?

    Re: cruise control, mine has the Tuneboy software solution. I just enable it after startup when touring, and hit the starter button to enable the speed hold. It’s not as ‘smart” as a modern system but works well enough.
    My Tuneboy package also included mapping which works well enough for the 3/4 SC Project setup on my bike.

    Carl, not sure what your decision re R1250R was. I owned a 16 R1200R full pkg, Remus can, Clearwater darlas and Billie brake light for 2 yrs and 14k mi. Sold it and bought my ‘18 1260 Pikes Peak with 12k mi which as of 11/2022 has 14k mi. I live in TX USA. Reason to trade: sound, and fork front end. Mainly I wanted more spunk and engaging handling than the Telelever provided. Looks are flashier on the MTS but my Alpine white and red frame looked great too. The MTS is more comfortable for me and it’s better on a dirt road (ie connecting to campsites) than the R12 was. The R12 and R1250 are great bikes. I just wanted a change and I love the MTS roar. Btw I’m 63 and I ride trials on a SHERCO 125 and I teach MSF and Lee Parks courses. Great content…wish I could convince my wife to ride pillion or learn. 😊

      Hello Bart and welcome to the channel, yes the 1260 pikes peak is a beautiful bike and if I could have found a good one in the condition and mileage I wanted... I would have one now. They are lovely bikes. I hope you continue to enjoy it and your wife decides to join you. My wife eventually did... and she loved it so much she now has her own KTM 390 duke... 👍

    From the US here, been riding only Ducati's since 1985. Have been going on yearly moto-tours in Europe for the last 17 years. On these various tours, I got to ride the 1200/1250 GS few times, the old 1100 Multistrada, 1200 Multistrada few times, R1200R few times. As a Ducatisti, I have to admit the R1200R was the most enjoyable and easiest to ride in the mountains/Alps/ Dolomites and everywhere in between. It also had the 'optional BMW touring' windscreen which does a good job.

    • @jdesmo1
      @jdesmo1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only dislikes on the R1200/1250R: Bike is ugly, and low ground clearance means I scraped the pegs/side of my boots occasionally during 'spirited' mountain runs.

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, thank you for the feedback, and its true what you say about the ground clearance as I also found this a problem (more about this in a future video) but sadly it was comfort that was main issue even after trying multiple seats and trying the small "sport screen" a just could not last more than 1 and half hours without wanting to get off. But the bike itself was extremely accomplished and very capable. But it did get me thinking about the other options with that 1250 motor. The Alps are indeed a wonderful place to tour. Best wishes Carl and welcome to the channel.

      @@justthewayitis I'm 173 cm, 65kg. I had no problems riding this bike all day long for 10-14 days straight on the tours. The taller 'touring' screen helped. Not much fatigue or pain at the end of long riding days. I would not have this bike, also because personally I don't buy anything German in general. Along those lines, I would not consider any of the new generation VW owned Ducati products. My last bike was 2009 Ducati 749S Monoposto. Probably the best Ducati I ever had.

      @@justthewayitis The 749/999 had by far the best ergonomics for a 'superbike', with an amazing seat. since 1985 I bought all my Ducati's used except the 749S, and put at least 30,000 miles on each one, enjoying each one for many years: 1983 600 Pantah, 1990 750 Sport, 1993 900SS, 2009 749S. At this phase of my (lucky, no crashes, no injuries) riding career, and also being 67 years old, I'm looking to go back to basics and simplify things. Huskvarna 701 Svartpilen is what I'm looking to get.

    Nature of live, things just change... so true, after 10 years of Multistrada riding (almost 200.000km) I've bought a S1000XR 2020 model. Totally in love (didn't like gen1) Perfect seating for me. Exactly what I was looking for. Smaller steeringbars, more sportive bodyposition, and the silky smoothness of a 4 in line with a QS... agree on the new boxer engine, its great. Lots of grunt, and enough power in the toprange. I did think for a brief moment about the R1250RS.... beautiful bike, but maybe a bit too heavy. Wonder what you decide.... (ow and the new Multistrada V4 just couldn't convince, it's too bulky for me and I can't afford the new PikesPeak)

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Antoine, thank you for your comments and I think your going to have a lot of fun on your S1000XR. When I rode and tested the new V4S Multi I was a little disappointed with the lack of useable low down grunt which my old 2013 model has lots of. Yes the top end is fabulous but I found you have to use all the gears and higher revs to get it going. The technology used is great but I was and still am unsure if it's the next bike for me. Tonight I will publish the R1250R review, I hope my subscribers like it. We all like different bikes for different reasons... smile. I've heard the new Pikes Peak is different again and possibly better...but its jolly expensive and out of my reach. Best wishes Carl

    I just dont really like a naked bike. It cuts down your operating riding envelope in the speed department. I find myself hanging on to the bike instead of riding the bike. Add on screens jst dont work the same as one designed with the bike. I would say the RS1250 would be a better choice if you plan on touring but i would raise the bars on the RS. On the other hand buying a newer Multistrada is also a choice. Perhaps a 1260 and its faster than the 1250R. In the end your 1200 Multi is lacking a few nice features on the new bikes, quick shifter, cruise control, longer maintenance cycle. I dont understand why you dont need the luggage capacity if you are still going to tour? I dont see your wife carrying all her luggage on the 390. Thats also the great thing about the Multi, you can take the bags and trunk off and be just as naked as a naked bike!
    My vote is to go out and buy a 2014 Multistrada 1200GT and add the TuneBoy Cruise control software and quick shifter setup. The bike has DSS and Stability control. Both systems work great. Im on my second 2014 Multistrada GT now and it is the second best two bikes I have ever owned. The number one best bike to have is a BMW RT, that is if you want a big bike and are willing to sacrifice the Sport end of riding. If not its the Multistrada, its just that good.

      @justthewayitis  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Michael, thank you again for your thoughts and feedback. After 3 different road test I decided that as amazing as the R1250R is... I just could not make it work for me. Lack of ground clearance and comfort being my two main concerns. I did try the short oem sport screen which did increase the higher speed capability... but for touring it would need something bigger.
      I allready have the full topbox and panniers set on my multistrada so there is little point me moving to a 2014 GT.
      I was positively surprised how good the BMW 1250 motor is, and in future videos I am going to look at the other three models in that lineup (RS,RT,GS).
      I have never really been attracted to the GS, having riden several of the earlier versions and not really enjoyed them, but I have not tried the latest GS with 1250 motor, so that is on my list to test and if I can arrange to have one for a longer period, then I will make a couple of videos for the channel. Have a great weekend, Carl

    If you liked the R1250R then you've got to try a RS1250! I think you'll love it. I messed up and traded a '23 RS 1250 for a Multistrada V4S, bad decision.

      If your talking about a soft feeling front brake, it’s probably the diaphragm in the master cylinder, Ducati know about this and should replace it under warranty. Have a chat to your local dealership 🙋🏻‍♂️
