hey great job! any newb out there now has a clear, concise, down to earth guide to "Repair" their own battery pack.
Seriously guys do you really need it spelled out for you. its simply the knowledge of the entire build or breakdown of a lipo battery with which you can then repair anything on yours. why not say thank you and not show your ignorance and lack of appreciation.

Thanks for the kind words man. I was just going to say, this was 7 years ago! If people don’t know how to wire cells in series & parallel, how to connect them to the BMS or main pack leads, they definitely shouldn’t be tearing down batteries in the first place. lol. 😂 Thanks for the kind words!

Tip: if you want to get of the old solder, rather than shaking the bat pack when the solder is hot and liquid, just hold it upside down and let the solder run to the solder iron, you’ll get 99% of tje old solder out. Them shake the solder iron. Much efective and easy

I use those same amass xt60 and xt90 connectors. The plastic grip piece your talking about that snaps into place is to eliminate the use of shrink / heat tape. Their called shrink tubeless connectors or something like that.

    Awesome and safe video!
My 8th scale truggy did cartwheels running 6s at 50+ mph today and slung a brand new(2 days old) 60c 3s about 20 feet in the air...pretty good ding and a crease on the top cell but was still balanced perfectly down to a thousandth of a volt so I slammed her back in there and ran it down. No temp issues or anything stupid but I am still keeping a eye on it...will attempt a safe charge outside in my metal trash can hopefully no magic smoke is needed.

Liked your program on repairing a lypo. Ive tryed fixing or frankensteining so batteries they usualy end up in the recycle because the conectors are but a strip of foil and thats hard to solder. They usualy die in a big puff of smoke or there nothing to solder to.
Anyway here an idea for a show
I had a blade Chroma and loved it. My buddy chalenged me to follow his DJI 4 pro
Well at 1700 metters my Chroma went in to shock and died probebly battery died or something.
It fell and my buddy had his camera pointing down as hes trying to follow it and laughing at my dying drone. I got my drone, one arm torn off and the rest a pile of pastic bits. The only thing that survived are the motors. I want to build a drone with a carbon fiber or molded fiberglass body . I want to put the motors that survived on and i have a beebop 2 that still flyes take the mainboard and join it with the motors.i think that would be a killer heavy drone . Now im hoping that the beebop board will be able to supply enough power for the motors and i have a spare 5040 mA battery that volunteared to be power the part i need help at is the wiring of batery to board the main battery has a positif and negatif , the board has a multy plugg with 10 connector how do i take a battery with 2 wires and connect 10 points.i will tear a beebop battery appart to see how the cell are connected to the pluggand how do i know wich wires coming from the board to connect to the motorboth have 3 wires but diferent colours. Hope you can help. I frankenstein drones all the time but there beebop size or smaller .i was going to send some pics of my drone collection but theres no attach a file link on your coments. Keeping an eye out for your episodes

shortening balance leads are actually not recommended, because of different resistance. so you'll get wrong (yeah, it maybe like 5mV only, but anyway) voltage reading when balancing.
this mostly applies for thin conductors and less important for thicker wires. also, it depends on balancing current which (on passive type of BMS/chargers) are enabled in parallel to get some current away from cell when charging or discharging (but always for higher v/cell)...
and the flux residues (don't know which type you use, but anyway) should be washed away with smth like isopropyl alcohol (IPA) or acetone, otherwise it will ease the corrosion over time.

    • @halflife82

winex You’re correct and thanks for the comment, however on all LiPo batteries I’ve ever seen and handled the past 10 years in this hobby, I’ve never ever seen a balance tap wire that small of a gauge to make it matter, but with extremely small gauge, yes that is theoretically possible. However, that being said, no charger has lab-grade precision for IR readings to do that fine level of balancing (even my PowerLa. 8 Revolectrix charger which is considered the most accurate charger on the market with the highest precision available to the consumer); b) the JR connectors used have too low of a clamping force to even keep resistance readings perfectly accurate anyway. Basically in this application it’s irrelevant is the point, unless the balance leads are wildly differing lengths. If you want an accurate IR reading of cells, the ONLY accurate way to get that on the consumer level is Wayne Giles IR meter which is borderline lab grade precision for this application.

    • @Winexoid
      @Winexoid 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

thanks for the info. though, i didn't talk about IR measuring, but the process of balance charging. you know, someone could get really thin chinese wires like 26-28AWG - imho, it will matter.
yes, consumer chargers aren't that precise, sometimes up to 50mV or even higher - that's sad.
for ex, IMAX B6 Mini's voltage readings are different depending on the range - it looks like divider switching.
and yes, those balance connectors are crap :(. i think they're called JST-XH

    • @solentlifeuk

Last night I noticed some foil from one of the cells tearing. Is it a compleat loss of the battery? Or can I wrap it back up and continue running it?

I need a little advice for my situation, noticed one of the leads on my pack, I could see the exposed wire on the negative side at the base of the wire, it doesnt really look like the insulation broke, just got pulled away somehow, theyre hobby store brand batteries, so probably not the greatest, I was wondering if jamming some brush on tape down the hole would be good enough to protect them, or if I should dissasemble them and put some shrink tubes like you did. Never pulled one apart before so your video was informative to give me an idea of what to expect. Thanks!

Nathan Thomas you should be okay, however it’s worth keeping a very close eye on that Lipo, especially when charging it. Also make sure you store it in a fireproof container/area just to be sure. It should be fine from my own experiences of crashed race drone lipos, but occasionally when the cell is damaged badly enough or the cell’s pouch itself if spit open that cell won’t hold voltage or a proper charge long. I usually just pull the pack apart and remove the bad cell and use it for another application at that point. Thanks for the kind words!
