  • The new school year is still six weeks away, but there's no summer break at Sandburg Middle School in Golden Valley where the effort to ready the school for reopening in September is in full swing.
In the growing Robbinsdale School District, both Sandburg Middle School and Pilgrim Lane Elementary in Plymouth are undergoing some renovations this summer in order to reopen the schools for the coming school year.
"I spent the last year, since last fall in this preparation: everything from garbage cans to microscopes to security systems, to hiring teachers and helping the new principal in that work, so it's been quite a project, but it's coming along very nicely, and we're excited for September," said Bruce Beidelman, a principal on assignment with the Robbinsdale School District.
Sandburg Middle School is a work in progress right now as they bring the school back online for the upcoming school year. It's a $430,000 project that includes updating the security system and entries as well as laying new flooring.
The school last operated as a middle school in the spring of 2009. Since then, it's been used for adult learning and community education, as well as for Highview Alternative School, which will remain at Sandburg in the fall.
Around 600 students in 6th to 8th grade will attend Sandburg Middle School come September. Many of the students will be coming from Plymouth Middle School where space was tight last school year.
"The staff that has chosen to come here is very excited about the change and the opportunity to open a new school," said Sandburg Middle School Principal Amy O'Hern. "The students, we've had a couple open houses now, and just the look in their eyes of someplace new and the fact that they're starting this, is very exciting for them too."
Sandburg first opened in 1959. American poet Carl Sandburg came to the school for its dedication.

Sandburg was a bit tight, but over all you could get through. That's what I experienced when I was there for 6th grade.
