I always liked the Harper Agency. Any good character I play always does their best to aid this organization ever since my first paladin encountered them. The agency ended up saving my paladin's party from a TPK when we accidentally uncovered a cult of Tiamat while trying to find a lost npc. We were not supposed to find them but like any good DM, they improvised. I have felt indebted to the Harpers ever since. Fun fact, my paladin's NPC wife ended up being a Harper Spymaster.
The bard delivering honeyed words to build up the confidence of noble in the form of a well chosen play performed at a feast so that he will be inspired to commit his men to a fight is a good example of a Harper, An articulate speech delivered to right person at the right time is just as effective as a knife through the ribs of a tyrant.
Legend in PTBR! Show!!! A great video. I wanted to know about The Harpers because they seem to suit my current rogue well. He's chaotic good and belonged to a Robin Hood-like group. So I can imagine him joining since he believes in their message. Yet, my DM being the cunning bastard he is, has introduced him (secretly) to another faction... The Zhentarim. Where he'll most likely be tempted by the power, privilege, and family-shaped hole in his heart. I can only hope these guys (or his own intelligence/group) will be able to reach out to him before it's too late.
Faerûn History Considering that both groups are the secretive kind, I hope that this storyline leads to that. We're a beginner group doing Phandelver, so we're in the early stages of our characters. So I look forward to how the factions can change/help us. I also look forward to your Zhentarim video. :D
Do you plan on doing one of these for the order of the gauntlet & the emerald enclave? I'm running Tyranny of dragons and would love to show these to my players during a time where they may choose to join either of the factions. Any way love the videos ! These have helped me make our campaign 10x better thank you!
Would be interesting. The Order of the Gauntlet and the Emerald Enclave have a lot less history than the Harpers. Especially the Enclave was nothing particularly noteworthy until 5th Edition made it an important faction. Before that, it was little more than a Druid Circle with political influence in the nation of Turmish.
Presumably you'd take the video about the Order of the Gauntlet and put some of the focus on "The Companion" As that thing is pretty much the defining feature of Elturgard, as well as the reason that the Order exists and is as successful as it currently is in 5th Edition.
I do not have much to add to this, mostly because the Harpers are an organization that still puzzles me to some degree. I do however want to add the interesting detail that the Harpers under oath don't work for free, but are paid for their work. This payment is minor and done to fuel an agents activities in the field; but in short, the Harpers don't expect their agents to work entirely as a labour of love. An additional point is that the title of High Harper appears to indicate directly that the Harper in question sits on the council, and that said Harper in turn holds a position similar to other ranks of Harpers on any occasion where they aren't to attend council-meetings.
When it comes to High Harpers, my experience is so far mostly with Tam Zawad from the Brimstone Angels-series, and there he is essentially a new guy in the position, and quite well liked.
I do not disagree. There are areas where it probably would be impossible to avoid these guys. But in those cases, you could luckily avoid having to say much beyond the general information about them. (Like how talking about Silverymoon would be impossible without at least acknowledging Alustriel, and how Icewind Dale absolutely couldn't be spoken of without mentioning Drizzt) My point was however not to argue that you should cover Storm or any other of her sisters, but rather that she is a prime example of a High Harper that breaks-the-mold and shows that they come in many different "forms." The same could be said of Elminster after all; he is a Harper as well after all. Calling him that would just have to be done with endless asterixes************ added to it. It might at this point be one of the least accurate statements in the world.
Drizzt shouldn't be too much of a problem. He has a tendency to keep to himself unless in the company of his closest friends, so in an episode about Icewind Dale, as long as you don't tell the story from the perspective of a local dwarf, Drizzt would be little more than an acknowledged first-line-of-defence for Ten Towns (especially since most people don't know he killed Akar Kessel). The Seven Sisters are a harder beast to handle.... They have quite varying personalities and as such are known in very different ways to the people they live/lived adjacent to. With the Sisters and Elminster, the best option might be going for breaking your normal rule and focus on Post-Spellplague information (perhaps go with the early 1400s?), during this time, most of the Chosen of Mystra have disappeared from their normal homes for-one-reason-or-another, and pretty much seen as dead to those communities. (If using the early 1400s, the Chosen would be gone, but the information from before the Spellplague would still be fresh in peoples' memories, so the format could essentially be a character reminiscing on better days)
I would like if you could do a lore on the dark society of the Twisted Ruin. The one on the Harpers was nice I might have my Next AL character chose that as their faction now that I know more on the rank of their organization😎👍💯
Seems like the harpers have changed a bit since the good old days of AD&D, or maybe you just focus on organisational matters here. I dont feel the bardic flair, the sense of adventure and the spirit of freedom here like you find them in "The Code of the Harpers" (AD&D, 2nd Edition). Its a great source book by the way. The definitive guide to the harpers as far as I am concerned.
dungeons and dragons is my biggest hobby right now - I currently don't have time for it as summer is here and I'm working 12 hours a day 6 days a week. your videos keep me excited and well learned of the lore. if I ever have a player show interest in the Harpers, I'll definitely use this video to aid me. thank you for your efforts!
Hello friends, I come here to ask if you could do some episodes with dubbing to Portuguese there is a very large group of players in the world of faerun in Brazil, if it is not possible, if anyone has an interest could do the dubbing of their materials without problems with your rights over the service? Thank you for your attention! May Kelemvor bless his ways!
Dubbing might be hard. I spend a lot of time hitting the right image to the right words, off by a beat and you have a problem. I am also not able to upload a secondary audio file to a video, so can't help much there either. If you want to give it a try, feel free however, I won't be putting in any ownership claims :)
I thought the Harper's were goofy Wizards that practiced unpredictable Magic? And their queen or leader was in love with Drizzt? I don't believe I've heard of these Harper's this is forgotten realm right?
Love the video! Unpopular opinion, but I really don't like the Harpers from a world building perspective. They don't feel like they are put into the world for their own reason, but because they are a useful tool for players and dungeon masters. For example, they would make more sense, as an organization, if they were devoted to some sort of deity, but that would make them less appealing to players who don't want to be involved with that deity. You ever read a book, and feel disconnected with it because you feel like you can hear the author coming through instead of the characters? As if the author is ham-fistedly attempting to make a point, instead of letting the characters and story unfold as they would? It's the same sort of issue I have with them. Again though, I love your presentation of the Harpers.
Truuuuuth. They are also kinda racist. They don't allow several more monstrous species to join like Goblinoids, Lizardfolk, Orcs, Kobolds, Yuan-ti and -for some ungodly reason- Tritons. Like I get where they are coming from with almost all of these because they have a bad reputation (doesn't make it right), but the Tritons?! Tritons are a Good Aligned aquatic species who like to hunt down evil. You'd think the Harpers would welcome then.
Great information, exactly what I was looking for but that accent... Very forced and unnecessary. Sounded like a poor impression of Ren from Ren and Stimpy
Really well done! Loved this one :D
Twinsies!!
YAY
Why the ph?

Narrated by a Khajiit
Khajiit have Harper membership if you have coin
Funny! I play a tabaxi....and a Warforged. Both would join as would my dragonborn or my tiefling.
that Baldur´s Gate music... so many memories !
Man, you are doing a great job! Please, continue I am looking ahead for the next videos!

Well Met
I loved this video. Please do more about the other factions! Thank you so much for the work you've been doing.
Hey. Thank you very much. The way you speak in quiet intrigue.
About to run Dragon Heist with a player that starts off as a Harper.
Your videos are invaluable.
Thank you.
What a coincidence. I'll be playing Tyranny of Dragons now, as an aarakocra lost as an egg and raised by Harpers. So excited!!
great content as always
I liked this one a lot too!!! This videos keep getting better and better!
i love your channel it has really helped me prepare for the waterdeep adventure awesome work keep it up ^^
Glad to hear :)
The Harpers should be a faction in Neverwinter or D&D Online

Faerûn History oh I completely understand being a content creator my self :)
Looking forward to seeing the other factions eventually, but it's okay - don't feel obligated to do them all at once!
Would be interesting.

Awesome video! Now I'm off to make a Harper Scout character in Neverwinter Nights :-)
This is great!Need more!
Awesome. Thank you so much for this.
Thanks for making this. I'm waiting for th Emerald Enclave one if you're doing it.

There is always Storm Silverhand, she is after all THE Harper.
I do not disagree.

Moonstars!! go go Blackstaff team!! :)
What a great video!
My last name is Harper and I have a family crest with a Lion with a crown idk what it means
You could make a great evil campaign about zentharim agents going deep undercover within the Harpers ranks
I would like if you could do a lore on the dark society of the Twisted Ruin. The one on the Harpers was nice I might have my Next AL character chose that as their faction now that I know more on the rank of their organization😎👍💯
Faerûn History cool thanks for the info Red Wizards will be the one I'm most excited to see...and as always thanks for doing this cool Lore stuff😎💯👍

will do!
You sound like ren from ren and stimpy
A bit harsh on those fashionistas... but otherwise thanks for the lesson!
funny bit of lore if the pin is reversed it means your part of the dark harpers the ex-harper group

I like ur videos but there so short lol
They take a while to make, so we try to keep them a reasonable length. (also, stats show that most people drop off after 3 min)
Khajiit has wares, if you have coin.
The Harpers aren't as good as they make themselves out to be.....
