Steyr-Puch Pinzgauer 710M in an offroad rally

  • Well, since youtube sent me a nasty email that I'm lazy and what not, I decided to check if I have anything worth uploading. Quick glance and here it is - pretty raw and rough edit of old footage shot with potato about a Polish offroad rally that a friend of mine invited me to. He took his 47 years old army truck, famous Steyr-Puch Pinzgauer 710M to the party and the results are pretty impressive - check for yourself. I mean the driving results - this thing is pretty unstoppable. Shooting and edit results are pretty pathetic - I guess it was shot with my old iPhone 7 without any external mic, edited within 30 minutes on old iMovie - so don't expect "The Expanse" level of special effects. But here it is - enjoy if you can - and thank you for watching!

    I owned a 1966 ex Swiss Army one in Colorado. It came with stainless steel military tire chains! You need to replace the cabin heater/windscreen defroster in it and windscreen wipers on it with aftermarket heater and windscreen wipers. It will climb out of anything with locked differentials in lowest 1st gear. The new ones in U.S., made by Stewart & Stevenson, cost $300k USD.

      @@jaegermeister1968 correct, but the spare parts for Kat 8x8 are almost impossible to get. Not that many have been made overall and no spare parts where made afterwards, so army cannibalised some of the trucks for parts already - and that started before they get to the civilian market. So not that great for the apocalypse, I guess... But yeah, I love this truck as well, but gosh, the prices...

    In the army we went off with a Pinz, to the alps in the evenings to find its limits. Twice we dug it out of snow and gravel, jumped several meters through the air..... I haven`t experienced a sturdier and more maneuverable vehicle of this size. Once it really meets its limits, there is the horse the only solution. The only thing you had to be aware is the tipping moment sideways. Therefore it is wise to wear the seatbelts always, not to get thrown out and rolled over.

      So the Swiss army had both the pinzgauer and the unimog 404s . They seem like they would have a similar size and performance. Was one used for any particular reason over the other?

    • @gahtsno1
      @gahtsno1 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Pinz was used as a personell carrier mainly (or the specific modell for ambulance), sometimes pulling a little trailer for mail, ammo, or other small stuff. The Unimog was used as a personell carrier and pulling the air defense cannon. Also were some used as the grease horse, carrying all the lubricans, used for vehicle service in the field. The Unimog has a much higher ground clearance, was also more sensitive for tipping sidewise.@@ericgenewold

I don't know what kind of power that plant makes but I'm sure it ain't much. However it looks to have the gearing to turn some larger meat than your running. Either that or dump some real bucks on a set of tracks that will bolt onto your existing hubs. Personally I don't see the fun in fighting that gumbo.
