Even if Harlie wasn’t special needs, no child deserves to be yelled at while on stage. If I was a kid performing that would’ve completely screwed me up and scarred me. She could’ve discussed her concern with the director. Trailer trash is accurate.

I have the feeling that if Harley ever mentioned to her mom she didn't want to do pageants anymore she would be happy to put her in any activity she would want to do. That is how you build self confidence, also I loved how both of her parents were there to cheer her on and tell her how great she did! I just like how their parenting style for both girls is catered for them and its clear to me at least that while they put piper in for her look initially, she fell in love with it and her mom embraced it, if Piper wanted to quit I think her mom would also be happy to put her in whatever she wanted to try next.

@laurawilliams8005 yes it is, it is a harmful euphemism towards disabled people. Read this from neurodivergent_lou: Disabled people's needs are not special, extra, burdensome or additional, they are human needs. Referring to disabled people as having special needs is inaccurate. As an autistic person, I need to be able to communicate and express myself, that need to communicate is not special, that need is the same as every non disabled person. I might just need accommodations in order to communicate. The term 'special needs' makes it feel like accommodating disabled people is optional, which it is not. The term special needs is also associated with special treatment too and it gives society the impression that instead of accessibility being a right, it is 'special treatment' or a 'special privilege.' If disabled people's rights were seen as the rights that they are (instead of being seen as extra, additional or special) then perhaps wheelchair ramps would be in every building, plastic straws would be available to those who need them and disabled toilets would be made to be available and accessible. Instead, disabled people's accessibility rights are seen as an afterthought. I want to see disabled people's accommodation needs normalised and the term special needs does not do this for me. It 'others' disabled people. It separates disabled people's needs and the needs of non disabled people. When I was labelled as having special needs as a child, it took away my ability to feel pride in my disability too and see disability as part of my identity. The term special needs often infantilises disabled people too. Disability is not special, rare, exceptional or unusual. Disability is a normal part of life. The term special needs makes it sound as if it is unusual or rare. This too heightens the inaccessibility cycle. If people believe that disabled people are few and far between then people don't see the point or the benefit in accessibility. Accessibility is however vital. Sometimes people say that they don't see my disability but just see my needs, specifically my 'special or additional needs.' I feel that this is often because people see my disabled identity as something inherently negative, which I guess is part of growing up in a society which sees disability as something to be ashamed of. I need people to recognise my disability. I am exhausted by the euphemistic terms used to describe disability. which I guess is part of growing up in a society which sees disability as something to be ashamed of. All of these pageant parents are horrible. How is putting gobs of makeup and false nails, lashes, hair, etc. on these LITTLE GIRLS and making them "compete" to be the prettiest girl going to make them better human beings? It teaches them that they have to be the prettiest or most talented (or the child of the parent who can grease the most palms) to be a "winner". Does more harm than good. How does never winning help Harley build her confidence?? If only her parents had volunteered with her at an animal shelter, soup kitchen, or helped her learn a valuable skill, that would have really helped that sweet girl learn her self worth.

This little girl has social anxiety and is required to have a routine in which she has to perform it on stage all by herself, while being stared at by an entire room filled with strangers. There’s a difference. I wish people took Anxiety Disorders more seriously these days. It is so debilitating and yet everyone acts like it’s so manageable. It’s really not, at all. I have NVLD and I too have social anxiety and its so real!! I started dance when I was 9 years old and it was the best therapy for me!! I had so much fun and I loved performing. I started ballroom dancing 6 years ago and Its also my therapy/escape place/happy place. The fact that the director was ok with side line coaching so they know what they're doing plus the fact that the mom is ok with points taken off so her daughter can have the accommodations she needs to have a blast at a pageant is all that matters plus when that one coach said that no one knew that she was special needs and the fact that it wasn't brought up until this mom decided to make noise about it tells me that there might be a little bit of jealousy going on and this is the mom who was asked to show a birth certificate.
