  • Retail grocery chain Woolworths held its annual Checker of the Year competition in September 1967.
    After correctly tallying up 30 groceries in 40 seconds, entrants would then need to pass a written test before being assessed on personality, appearance, deportment and speech.
    $750 cash, a two-week holiday to New Zealand, plus a trophy and sash all awaited the winner.
    This segment aired on the ABC's This Day Tonight on 21 September 1967.
