    Good brief summary. Also note that the building of neighborhoods to exclude outsiders made them very difficult to serve with transit -- squiggly roads and cul-de-sacs (which are meant to keep out outsiders by discouraging through travel) pretty much enforce automotive access only. Of course, the automotive manufacturers and oil companies loved this. In addition, highway projects served a double role in being destructive to transit and to minority and other poor neighborhoods. (Examples in the Boston area the Massachusetts Turnpike and the Southwest Expressway -- the latter was never built, but large swaths of neighborhood were destroyed before it was stopped.)
