Just so people know exactly what this guy is fleeing from. The man's name is Victor Baymon. He shot 3 people at three different locations, killing one. It started when he followed his ex-wife as she went into a tax preparation business. At the business he shot and killed the tax preparer (Brandon Harris). He then headed to a convenience store and committed armed robbery. During the robbery he shot the store clerk (the clerk survived and is critical condition as of writing this), He then carjacked a car belonging to a man. Drove it a few miles where he crashed it at an apartment building complex. Then he carjacked a car belonging to a female. After only going a short distance, he got out of that car and shot construction worker at random (who survived and is critical condition). This final piece I am not clear about. But either he drove off in the current car or he carjacked another car and drove off. After a manhunt lasting several hours, the police caught up to him and this pursuit began.
That multiple victims, is why they would be willing to chase in the way shown. He needed to be stopped, as he's they type that won't stop till dead.

I'm a staunch supporter of law enforcement officers, but pursuing someone against the flow of traffic is insane.
It is, however if it was known that law enforcement would not pursue in such instance then it would be used by people fleeing a lot more I think
They were pursuing someone who had carjacked and shot multiple people. The threat his rampage was actively causing at the time justifies the aggressive pursuit.
The driver of the car leaving law enforcement on this chase was on a murder spree. Think about it.
That LEO knew what he was doing, as did everyone of the other officers taking part in the apprehension of the murderer. BTW, it was the murderer endangering other motorists.
A few months ago in my local area, a head-on collision wiped out a whole family, that was traveling in a van.
I have never EVER seen a more crazy, proficient driving cop in my life. That was nerve racking to watch.
I'm no cop groupie, but it sucks they have to save these creeps after dangering everybody's lives..

As a police officer for over 30 years, I would have never chased the suspect on the wrong side of the road. Because the risk to other drivers is too great. Thank God nobody else was hurt or killed.

Same boat here too (23 years and counting) I was thinking of all the GO violations and how fast could I have gotten back onto the correct side of the road.

I could not agree more. I've been involved in too many that ended in death or serious injury. Our agency had a Legal Intervention Policy that allowed, If safely done, to take them out. Sacrificing a car is better than speeding along until someone is killed. There must be a balance between the risk of a pursuit against the risk to the public if the bad guy gets away. And believe me, I know how hard it is to let them go but if they do, that's what detectives are for!
That poor tree wasn't doing anything to nobody. So sad.

Sincere condolences to the trees family ,I pray for its survival. My sadness and despair to all insects and algae-moss,other microbes etc, that were killed that day and to the survivors, now made homeless from the tree that come together for each other to find another place they can call sanctuary. My heartfelt apologies to any birds that may have nested in the tree and all other birds that regularly met their friends there, will now have to find other trees as meeting places. And sorry to the sods of earth and grass and life therein destroyed, ripped apart and scorched bt the car fire. SORRY 😢

I was wondering if anyone would mention the sidekick riding the dash. I spent many, many years riding around with a small stuffed penguin attached to the dash of my highway patrol car. People in the communities I served would sometimes even identify me as "the cop with the penguin" when they didn't know my name🐧👮♂😁

Thank goodness 3,000 people were actually paying attention to their surroundings and didn't completely lose it when wrong way drivers approached them at triple digit speed.
Absolutely reckless of the LEO to drive in opposing traffic at those speeds. Regardless of what the criminal does, you don’t drive 75-100mph in oncoming traffic as an LEO. That’s what a radio and helicopters are for. Super lucky no one else was killed during this chase.

Within the last year I had a wrong way driver coming at me at low speed. That almost made me crap myself. Those poor drivers going the other way must have just been having heart attacks.

Idiots don't care to realize when police officers put everyone in danger. The initiation of the stop is what put people's lives in danger. They knew he was a suspect in a violent crime involving a firearm, and at that time, he didn't know they were on to him until they turned their lights on (knowing that he is a suspect in a triple shooting, mind you). Any idiot should know, if someone is willing to shoot another person, then they probably aren't just going to surrender when a cop says "pull over". Common sense would say that it would be a public risk to initiate a stop against a potentially armed person with the capacity to kill in a populated area. Police actually have the technology to never have to chase anybody again, yet this was the choice they made. Dumb.

Just shows how much the safety of cars has improved over the years. 10 years ago hitting a tree at that speed would have left nothing but body parts and scrap metal all over the road.

It varies from agency to agency. Some agencies cant even pursue anyone when they run. If you turn your lights & siren on to pull someone & they speed off then you have to turn your lights & siren back off. Then either pull over & stop or go in another direction. How stupid is that? Crime is through the roof.

Did you not see those other cops sitting at the intersections, directing traffic, and making people pull over to the side, to try and prevent anyone from being hit or possibly killed? At least they were alerting other drivers to move out the way.

I'm all about catching the bad guys, but I don't agree with disregarding public safety for the score. Insane. If one car would've attempted to move out of the way during one of these high speed passes, an innocent person could have died. Crossing into oncoming traffic; radical lane changes at an intersection; well over 100 mph on the wrong side of the road. You can't sacrifice an innocent civilian to win the day. Sometimes you win by losing.
I'm from NZ, That was amazing, insane. We have people like this driver, usually they get away. That is one determined cop.

I'm a huge supporter of law enforcement, but that was beyond reckless. The bad guys can't outrun the radio. Flying through intersections, wrong way into traffic. It's a miracle that no innocent lives were lost in this chase.
I'm sure his family will sue the city. Because that's how things go now. No matter what he was doing wrong, The family will super money.

This is where the cops and bystanders break out the marshmallows and hot dogs for a cook out.
What is amazing to me is that this officer would go racing to catch this guy down the wrong side of the road! Most departments would have called the chase off. By doing so you don't risk the lives of innocent bystanders unnecessarily and the suspect will more than likely not drive so dangerously and not put innocent lives at risk.
It also confuses drivers and could risk a panic reflex's, if you see someone coming at you head on at a high rate of speed it can cause others to panic and not give them enough time to react.
Not only that it is a liability for the department and the municipality as well as the state. If that officer wrecked into an innocent bystander, he would have been liable and more than likely sued.
This is officer was both reckless and just plain stupid.
And of course he had previous offenses prior to this little escapade...

I thought that too. Holy shit. You would never see even the most advanced trained drivers do that here in the UK. What on Earth are they taught in these small rural US departments? A couple days through some cones? Here, it is a 3-week full-time course just to respond using lights and sirens, then another 3-week full-time course plus a one-week add-on to drive advanced vehicles and carry out pursuits/vehicle tactics.
