    The land story is such a non-issue with such an easy solution, just give her the land and let her choose what to do, you bought it for her to begin with so it's already essentially hers.
    She can sell it now for a down payment or keep it for the future and if she regrets her choice later on that's on her.

    • @lolmanyeah1
      @lolmanyeah1 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      Exactly. As of now they bought one daughter a house and then bought themselves some land. Then they tell second daughter they don't have the money. Why do they have the land? Makes no sense to not give it to the daughter to do what she wants with.

    • @RawFishHeader
      @RawFishHeader ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@lolmanyeah1 It makes me think if the other house they bought for the other daughter is actually owned by the daughter or not. They could very well just be buying houses but not wanting to actually give / put their children's names on them to ensure that they live close by.

      Or maybe be honest with their THRITY+ YEAR OLD DAUGHTER that they aren't able to afford to financially help her, and is welcome to move into the plot of land if necessary. As described, Heather will very likely understand the answer

    • @watariboshi
      @watariboshi ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I'm baffled by all the YTA that say they shouldn't have bought the land because she didn't want it. The land increased in value, so by buying it they have more to give her even if she didn't want the land specifically. It's like putting the money they saved for her into stocks so that when she wanted it, it was worth more.
      It seems like their hesitation is more because the land might be valuable enough where it's a poor financial decision to sell it (holding the asset is more valuable), rather than they want to force their daughter to live near them.
      In that case, they should just include her in the financial discussion / give her the land so she can decide whether to keep it or to use it for her down payment.

    I feel like the main issue with redditors and chat when it comes to siblings is that, for some insane reason, people seem to have a horrible relationship with their siblings, and sometimes with their parents too, to the point that they feel like one sibling should resent the other if they aren't treated 100% equally at all times.
    I have a brother, we lead completely different lives, he has way more means than I do today, but we often times just help one another because you know, we are family? And familial relationships aren't a transaction that requires equity at all times.

      If you are offered 100k for being related, given another 100k from your hard work, and then the original 100k is taken back, you have -100k. What would have been +100k for a person with unsupportive parents (0 from parents, 100k scholarships) is -100k for you because the parents became unsupportive. How you can see this as anything but a punishment makes no sense.
      That being said, I don't think this hypothetical person is due a 100k check from the parents. maybe just like a 10k check for spending money or something. It affects the parents 1/10 as much, and gives the child a "bird in the hand". No college kid is complaining about a free 10k

In general, he got a lot more things than I did when we were growing up, because my family was in a better place when my parents decided to have another kid. I actually kinda think the kids needing help are in the wrong. Why did they rat out their parents for advising them to ask the rich nanny? It's not about the parents at all. The kids should have focused the conversation on their needs, and if the nanny says no, don't bring up mom/dad telling you she can afford it! Take no for an answer.

From there they can go through their options. I also don't think the daughter would begrudge them for saying no.

My parents went deep into debt and ruined their credit because of insane interest but now that i have money i would rather have them borrow at 0% interest from me than lending from insane interest again.
    Anyway, we need more details of the relationship. The parent just washing their hands and telling go ask your sister for money is bad though. Tell the sister first. Also, the siblings shouldn't feel entitled. It's all a favor and the sister should really consider doing it because it's the nice thing to do but things aren't just a given.

    The two things I think are germane to that last post which are really the difference makers in this are:
    1. Urgency of need of her siblings, to whit if they were like literally out of housing or food and they had a family member who made that much and refused to help them they’d obviously be the asshole. Wanting to borrow money for a down payment on a house or just to not have student loans is blatantly not pressing in the same way.
    2. At some fundamental level NL is right and even one of the most ostensibly closest relationships a person can have, and a channel of wealth so exorbitant, does not provide enough pressure for this person to provide for her community. Thusly, she and especially her employers should be getting taxed at an obscenely larger rate than they are. The wealthy will never willingly give back to the world the good fortune they have been given.

    • @Nowolf
      @Nowolf ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that said, although less *urgent*, there is something to be said about the total value involved, when it comes to loans. the difference between 10K from someone with the means, now, versus the 25K+ you'll be paying back overall, is a *lot* of months of rent and food. do they have to wait until the previous month's payments zeros out their bank account before they can get help?

    I feel like Ryan's kind of missing a middle ground for the sisters house post though which is weird because usually he king solomons absolutely everything. Unless I read I wrong the parents bought 1 daughter the entire house? They could very reasonably have bought like 80% and set the other 20% aside for the other daughter. He's saying you can't just set aside pots of money for an indeterminate amount of time but like yes you can lol. It just seems kinda thoughtless if you had the means to not have planned for her wanting a house at all. It seems like a pretty predictable thing to want eventually and they knew they were going to retire
    Also like, sure you're doing a nice thing and you dont have to. But also it's different when it's your own children, there's definitely a fair expectation of some level of equity imo
    Also his 21 jump street scenario is completely non analogous because there is no scholarship and that kinda shows the issue imo lol

      I agree, I think it's the sheer amount of money that makes the difference. Like if my parents bought my sib a whole house and hadn't even offered to put aside some money for me, I'd be upset.
      Not because its unfair (though it is) but it's life changing to be able to afford a house. So I would be really sad my sib got that chance and I didn't.
      Moving on to the scholarship analogy. I think that's different. Like if I already owned a house through my own means, I wouldn't resent them helping my sib buy a house even if I recieved nothing. Because we both have the same opportunity.

For me it seems more likely that they'll be able to move back home sooner if they get on the property ladder asap instead of sitting on an empty plot of land and having to rent.
    Just view it as an incredible investment fund you did for your daughter. Bought land in a place where the land prices have skyrocketed?
