As a child (1973-1978) I lived in the village of Amington, 200 metres from the 'Gate Inn' on the Coventry canal. The stretch of canal between Glascote lock's and Alvecote Priory was our playground so this vlog has been very nostalgic for me. Thank You. I am now having a narrowboat built of my own...

For many years when I lived in my English homeland, it had been my intention to one day buy a Narrowboat up North and meander my way South back to Bath/Kennet and Avon to settle on calm waters. I have noticed moreso since retiring the proverbial clock is always ticking - careful time management is imperative. Conversely "pottering" is under-rated and is to be encouraged. I have been canal boating on and off for 58 years. It's essential when raising the top ground paddle is to do one quick turn and wait to let the air out can be wet then watch what happens then raise to fully open.

You create beautiful in worlds we ashore zoom by caught up in the madness and in a world where I was a young boy. With ropes fenders boat hook and locks, casting off going astern and pumping the bilges. At that time steel was average boaters and new look GRP cruisers were posh and for those with money. Now those values have gone astern but I am halfway back (@66) with a cruiser and my eyes on a narrowboat. Your fascinating talent combined with a sharp eye for chaffinches and old wharf ruins and your research are all excellent You inspire me when I get despondent and I always watch your lovely journeys and this always chills me out and sooths everything.Just wonderful Vanessa, Zephyr and Alice Grace and thank you. I'm an American. We have no canals here, no narrowboats, no ancient history. But, there is something that I can relate to, here. And that is patience. My life has been like a canal. Only one direction to go. Only one path to follow. Sometimes waiting for the good to come. Sometimes waiting for the bad to come. All with patience. Sooner or later, it all comes to fruition. Patience is the key to life.

That's the first time that I have been that close to a pig before and honestly, it looked at me like I was one of the family! I've said this before but your wildlife and nature shots are stunning especially the blackbird having a scratch and that pig's eye.You were lucky with the weather at Hopwas ,it has always been damp and grey whenever I've been through.By the way,another otter sighting in marina earlier this week,an adult this time playing for about 20 minutes and fairly near to where you were moored last October.

Hey Vanessa...love your videos. My knowledge of batteries is that you should try not to flatten them past 12.5 volts....which is 50 percent full. That's assuming they're lead acid batteries. If you have lithium batteries you can flatten them right down.
Discharging the battery to 60% should not be a problem. But lead-acid batteries need a very full charge about once per week. I would be cautious about believing the 100% charge on the meter. A long charge (say 8 hours on charge) will probably go past 100% but the meter probably stops counting at 100%.
That is such good advice, NBLeopard, thank-you. 😊 We do have lead-acid batteries and we tend to do a longish cruise once a week. It's definitely something that you have to think about though. Have a wonderful week.🦋🌻

I made the exact same mistake with my batteries when I moved off grid in my tiny house on wheels, they are still working okay, but not great capacity, but they do for now as I dream of lithium 😂

I am thinking of investing in one this winter, with solar panels, although I have solar on my roof, it brings a lot less in through the deepest winter as the sun is so low, so my idea is to catch the low sun with some moveable panels :) that is the plan anyway, of course wind turbine would be better up here as I am quite exposed on 3 sides :)
I'm always curious when I see the houses with their yards down to the canals......do you know which came first? Were the canals dug then people came along and bought the land and built, or were the houses first andcsome of their land taken to make the canal. Greetings from Australia......very cold Australia!
Any house that was built before 1700 would have been there before the canals. Several house were constructed as lock keepers cottages after the canals were built as part of the operation of the canal.Thank you so much for watching. Take care 🦋🌻

I'm an American. We have no canals here, no narrowboats, no ancient history. But, there is something that I can relate to, here. And that is patience. My life has been like a canal. Only one direction to go. Only one path to follow. Sometimes waiting for the good to come. Sometimes waiting for the bad to come. All with patience. Sooner or later, it all comes to fruition. Patience is the key to life.
These are very wise words, Stanley and perhaps that is why the slow pace of the canals is an ideal way of life for many of us. It is much easier to live in the present and enjoy the surroundings at a slow pace. Thank you so much for your comment. Have a wonderful weekend.🦋🌻

That's the first time that I have been that close to a pig before and honestly, it looked at me like I was one of the family! I sewed some seeds in the back fender right at the end of the summer last year and a couple of them came to life, so I'm hoping to have a better bunch this year.🤞 I'm so glad that you enjoyed the video, Ross. Good afternoon Vanessa what a interesting vlog with the failings of ur early narrowboat life, there's so much to learn but some times ur thrown into the deep end and impatience gets u trying to please others. I was only thinking last week and wondering if u would grow flowers on the fenders again 🥀. As usual lovely shots of the canal side houses how the other half live aha😊. Wow nearly 3k subscribers.They are queuing up to join,well done. I've said this before but your wildlife and nature shots are stunning especially the blackbird having a scratch and that pig's eye.You were lucky with the weather at Hopwas ,it has always been damp and grey whenever I've been through.By the way,another otter sighting in marina earlier this week,an adult this time playing for about 20 minutes and fairly near to where you were moored last October.

Hey Vanessa...love your videos. My knowledge of batteries is that you should try not to flatten them past 12.5 volts....which is 50 percent full. That's assuming they're lead acid batteries. If you have lithium batteries you can flatten them right down.

I know you use a polarizing filter on your camera lens. Bravo. how come so few narrowboat vloggers know about it?

Discharging the battery to 60% should not be a problem. But lead-acid batteries need a very full charge about once per week. I would be cautious about believing the 100% charge on the meter. A long charge (say 8 hours on charge) will probably go past 100% but the meter probably stops counting at 100%.
That is such good advice, NBLeopard, thank-you. 😊 We do have lead-acid batteries and we tend to do a longish cruise once a week. It's definitely something that you have to think about though. Have a wonderful week.🦋🌻

I made the exact same mistake with my batteries when I moved off grid in my tiny house on wheels, they are still working okay, but not great capacity, but they do for now as I dream of lithium 😂

I am thinking of investing in one this winter, with solar panels, although I have solar on my roof, it brings a lot less in through the deepest winter as the sun is so low, so my idea is to catch the low sun with some moveable panels :) that is the plan anyway, of course wind turbine would be better up here as I am quite exposed on 3 sides :)

I'm always curious when I see the houses with their yards down to the canals......do you know which came first? Were the canals dug then people came along and bought the land and built, or were the houses first andcsome of their land taken to make the canal. Greetings from Australia......very cold Australia!
Any house that was built before 1700 would have been there before the canals. Several house were constructed as lock keepers cottages after the canals were built as part of the operation of the canal.Thank you so much for watching. Take care 🦋🌻
