    After all those years spent watching others play Game Boy, now you get thousands of people watching you play it. Kid you would be so proud.

    My favourite thing now is exploring all of the titles I couldn’t afford as a kid. I’m in my 40s now so I really grew up in the 90s which meant 8 and 16 bit era. I love taking things slow, and picking a random title to play for a weekend. I treat it like my own personal rental store. Fridays before supper I read the game manual, and once the little ones go to bed I plug in for a bit :)

      That's what I want to do too, play all of the games I would've liked as a kid that I didn't get to play back then. But for me it would be mainly 2000s games like PS2 games (I had a PS2 as a kid but didn't have many games for it)

    I definitely do have a lot of nostalgia for the games I grew up with. It may be one of the reasons why I often go back to just playing classic games with the switch online instead of playing the new games that I have for the switch. Although that might also have to do with the fact that I'm familiar with those classic games and feel like I just have more time to play them compared to other games because I just don't find them as time-consuming as the new stuff. As an adult I just have a busy work life and I just don't feel like I have much time to play the new games that have so much jam-packed into them. It's not that I don't play any new games I definitely enjoy new games, it's just the old and familiar is just easier to get back into when I have a busy schedule

    I was the same with N64. I was around 8 when it came out and I think every gamer kid in my class went from SNES/Gensis to N64. I didn't even know Playstation 1 was the winner of the generation til I was in high school! I played MGS and Castlevania: SOTN on PS3 PSOne classics. And was like "oh, this is insane, way better than N64". But I still love the differences between each system back then, every console felt unique and had its own strengths.

    Personally rather more than having nostalgia by the consoles, I get more nostalgic by the graphics in some games (mostly indies).
    Most of the time I get super nostalgic when I play a 3D game with polygonal graphics ala N64/PS1 but it's kind of like if I'm playing a game that I missed on those consoles. 😂

    My Nostalgia runs huge during December. My parents were against video games so i knew each Christmas was not going to be waking up happy. All i wanted as a kid was my own console & i knew that wasn't going to happen. So Christmas for me was not that huge. So during my Christmas Breaks growing up i hung out at all my friends house who had there own home console! Playing the NES the whole month of December which really consisted of one game, Castlevania. That is my Nostalgic game: the original Castlevania on the NES.

    I have a lot of nostalgia for Sonic even though I never had a Genesis. Just would play it here and there at friends house. But I did watch the cartoon.
    I got my Game Boy in 1990. Never had the pocket or light or the others until the Game Boy Advance SP.
    This reminds me back in the 80's that I found out one of my good friends from school had been living in the house behind me and I never knew it. All of our backyards were fenced in. Found out after we got a slide playset thing built and I was on top and saw him over the fence in his backyard one day.

    The console I feel most nostalgic for is the ps2. I remember the first time I played games on it. Rotating the camera was such a trip for my child brain, and I remember playing ps1 games on it like spyro, and just spending hours listening to the autumn plains theme. My dad had a arcade game collection on it, and I remember playing gauntlet with him. It's one of the few memories I have of my dad after my mom divorced him, and moved out of state.
    I would say nostalgia is good thing. like a warm comfy blanket it protects me from the coldness of the outside world.

    No.1 for me easily goes to the NES. Playing Castlevania and Mario/ duck hunt at my uncle’s house before we got our own NES are core memories for me.
    And much like your SoR story, I was convinced for YEARS that my memories of playing Monster Party as a kid were just a wild fever dream. But no, the game is actually just as strange as I remembered it.

    I'm 90's kid (nostalgic term for old geezer nowadays) from Poland, so after fall of communism we had limited access to western consoles. Most of kids had this cheap south-asian NES ripoffs (which was great for us at that time) but I will never forget the feeling when I was visiting my friend's older cousin and he had PS1. I was astonished by the capabilities of this magnificent magic box. Imagine actually skipping one generation of consoles (SNES, Genesis) and jumping from Mario Bros. straight to Crash Bandicoot! And those shiny, rainbowy CDs instead of cheap plastic dusty cartridges? It was some Star Trek stuff for us at that time.
    Although my all time favourite console would be PS2 or PS3, I still have enormous amounts of nostalgia towards PS1.
    Just old geezer's thing 🥲

    I now have nes & genesis systems only(born in 83), but regarding Nostalgia, man.. n64 is it. I think it was the 8th grade thru high school time period, friends, new tech, late 90s magic! Bk then, it wasn't "early primitive 3d grafics, it was simply "new, current & exciting". Games like 1080 with all that drum & bass in the soundtrack.. come on now!!!

    Sega Mega Drive Will forever be my fist true love❤️ It was like having an arcade machine at home and later it was my trusty back up, when my Windows 95 PC gave me the fourth or fifth BSOD within 10 minutes😅 I also have the first gen Gameboy, SNES, PlayStation 1 and 2 as well as the N64 and Dreamcast and a PS3 to round things off, but the old Sega Mega Drive is still the the first one😊

    For me, the most nostalgic ones are: 1. NES, as it was my first one, 2. SNES, as it was the tournaments one (Street Fighter Alpha 2, Mario Kart, Killer Instinct etc.) and 3. Dreamcast, for the same reason (Street Fighter Alpha 3, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, etc.).

  • @Dorelaxen

    My personal nostalgia spot would be the Atari 2600, the NES, the SNES, and the Genesis. Past that, while I absolutely love the N64, Saturn, and Playstation, they'll never have that sweet, comfy blanket feel the older consoles have to me.

  • @GreyMatterShades
    @GreyMatterShades 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Definitely most nostalgic for the SNES. It was the first console I bought for myself. I was only 10, but I lucked out and got a gig as an extra on the Highlander TV show when they were filming an episode in my home town. I used the money from that day and some savings from when I managed to not blow my entire allowance on candy to buy a used SNES. Best decision ever.
    Also have a lot of nostalgia for the PSX. I'd upgraded to delivering newspapers by that time so I bought it myself as well. I was originally going to buy an N64, but between delays, FF7 coming to Playstation, and renting one and playing Resident Evil, I changed my mind. N64 was cool, but I think I made the right decision. I especially loved the OPM demo disks. Good times, man.

  • @milp00l
    @milp00l 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    The consoles I have the most nostalgia for are the ones my brother and I had growing up (Genesis, Game Boy and Game Boy Pocket, PS1, and GBA), along with a few that we didn’t have but played quite a bit with friends (Game Boy Color, N64, GameCube, and the OG Xbox). I had one single friend who had a Dreamcast and I always wanted to play it more but only got the chance once or twice. Still feel a lot of nostalgia for it, though.
    And even though I love consoles like the SNES and Turbo Grafx-16 now, I don’t have the same nostalgia for them because I just never really played them growing up.
    All that to say, I think I have a ton of nostalgia for the games/consoles I played even just a little bit compared to the ones I didn’t play or even know about

    I’m one of those weird people who has nostalgia for the TurboGrafx 16. Had one as a kid and traded it and 10-15 games in for a SNES with one game. I finally just acquired a TG-16 again and am working on rebuilding the collection.

  • @DeafeningCha

    I knew more people that owned a Nintendo 64 than PS1 growing up myself, but when looking at regional sales figures it isn't too surprising:
    PS1- Worldwide 102 million, North America 40 million
    N64 - Worldwide 32 million, North America 20 million
    It was the rest of the world where the N64 sold comparatively poorly. Heck, in Japan, even the Saturn outsold it. And yeah, being beaten in one region 2:1 isn't small by any means; but with how spread out geographically people are in the continent, there could easily be areas where the PS1 was relatively scarce. For myself, perhaps growing up near the Nintendo of America & Microsoft headquarters is why I knew so many people with a N64/GameCube/Xbox.

    • @RetroBirdGaming
      @RetroBirdGaming  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, I've thought about this. It was still outsold 2 to 1 in the US. So, it feels weird I didn't know anyone who had one. Even the older people I ran across with video games didn't have it.

    NES and early PC games from that same era. There are many who favor the NES, but early 90's PC games don't get much nostalgia love. Maybe because it's so hard to get them running, and they are pretty obtuse, but I still get pumped when I see SimCity or Civ boot up!

    I have nostalgia for basically any/all consoles I owned since I was a kid, but the one I have the most nostalgia for wasn't a console at all... but it almost should have been because of the quantity of games made for it... the Commodore 64. WOW Great video funny guy i could really relate to the part about having more nostalgia for the things you didn't have. For me most all the consoles are new. I had a regular nintendo, game boy, game gear, sega and ps1 and a handful of games for each console. And I'm grateful I had any but the super Nintendo was the one I really wanted, the trees on zelda were mesmorizing to me when i watched older kids play and the super mario world game the little bit i did get to play was an amazing experience... so for me it's the "i get to now" kind of feeling and I'm really really grateful, lots of fun. Great video thanks

  • @MrPooPooJohn
    @MrPooPooJohn 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

    One of the strangest things about getting older are the many stages, levels and types of nostalgia you eventually experience. And the ability to even predict which things you’re presently experiencing you know you’ll feel nostalgic for later in life. Like you said, when you’re a kid and everything is new and exciting, not only are you too young to experience it, but the concept is unknowable so you never even consider it until it happens. I’m old enough now to know that at some point your channel and this very video will give me that nostalgic sensation. I remember watching old AVGN videos and thinking about how weird it was to fell nostalgic for those! That really made me feel old.
    I’d say for many it first hits the hardest in the mid to late 20’s. Some experience it sooner and at different intensities & intervals. But the true experience of nostalgia sets in around a time where you’ve been away from college long enough to miss fun, notice the lack freedom fatigue and have been assimilated into the workforce long enough to truly realize how much longer you’ll have to endure it. While simultaneously realizing how fucking horrible being an adult really is. You don’t just miss the simpler times but start longing for them more regularly.
    Sadly, these compartmentalized periods of your life just keep stacking up compounding the nostalgia. All those memories and fondness you have for your childhood, the 80’s, the 90’s, teenage years/high school, different interests, music and phases, college, early 30’s… Man, I can’t wait to experience 40’s nostalgia! 😟 😔

    • @RetroBirdGaming
      @RetroBirdGaming  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Oh, I love experiencing something as an adult that I know I'll remember forever. That's the one thing about being a kid that's different. You're more likely to take it for granted at that young of an age :)

    • @Wil_Dsense
      @Wil_Dsense 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Yeah, when we were kids we didn’t have a concept of nostalgia, also had less things to distract us (such as cell phones and tablets etc) so we were more ‘present’ ie ‘living in the moment’ and so this heightened state of fun we were in caused the nostalgia (the good memories) to be extra potent! (Just a theory I thought of, but it seems quite plausible)!

    • @MrPooPooJohn
      @MrPooPooJohn 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@Wil_Dsense absolutely. that’s definitely a big part of it. Pure, unapologetic joy leaves a mark. Distractions and responsibilities clouding our minds prevent us from just enjoying ourselves. Bird has even covered this concept of feeling guilty about having fun. It’s 100% true tho. We all start punishing ourselves in one way or another for having fun or thinking about doing something fun.

    I feel bad that they wouldn't let you have a turn with their Gameboy as a kid. I also faced that problem too when I was a young kid. I experienced that a lot with kids I was friends on the street. These kids were vastly different than high school friends.
    I remember when they played Super Mario Bros 2. This was a game I really liked as a kid, wanted to play it & they would never let me play it. Also I had friends where I was watching them play games the whole day because they wouldn't let me play. Other times it was like oh we're playing board games today or they would play Sim City on their computer at the time. I was watching the whole.
    Then I wasn't friends with them anymore. I started hanging out with high school friends who were a lot nicer & considerate.

    Classic gaming in general gives me some nostalgia vibes. Unfortunately, my gaming abilities are waning as I'm starting my 50's and that makes me sad. On the bright side , my son will eventually get my entire gaming collectiong going back to the C64 and atari 2600 up to most modern gaming systems so if I have grandkids in the future they will get to play all the classics on original hardware while I cheer them on.

No making the paddles bigger or smaller, or any of that new fangled stuff. While in the navy i did buy a turbo express which i never got back, a sega genesis, and snes, and game gear. If i want to revisit a game like say silent hill, ill just watch a youtuber play through it now. Kinda more fun than going through it myself.

    As for nostalgia games Right now I'm playing Final Fantasy IX but on the Switch Lite.
    And late December I was playing Super Mario RPG Remake. Awesome game!
    I still got great memories of playing it on the original SNES (My favorite console ever) over the years.

    You know what is weird?
    I am 30 now but I'm already nostalgic to my early Switch games when I bought the console in 2019. Super Mario Odyssey, Arms and Call of Juarez: Gunslinger. The Switch is my first console I bought and because of the Pandemic those first games helped me to not go insane when everyone was stuck at home.

      Yeah, you can feel nostalgia for something that recent. I think it can happen for anything that's new or a first time. It's mostly associated with childhood because so many things are new back then.
      I feel nostalgia for trying VR for the first time, which was in 2018 or 2019, so similar timeframe. And it also helped me not go insane during the pandemic!

    I grew up a little later with the PS3 and 3DS, but I still have nostalgia for those too. It's interesting, when I was younger I didn't know anybody with a console, everyone I met had a PC (even at the age of 7 or 8). I think I knew one other person who had a 3DS.

      @@liamloxley1222 I was a 2000s kid and played both consoles and PC growing up. We had a family computer on Windows XP that I would often play games on, but I also had a PS1, then a PS2 a few years later, then a Wii during my high school years in the early 2010s. And for portables I had a GBA first, then a DS during my middle school years and a 3DS during my high school years.

    My PS3 gets a lot of nostalgia. My early adult life absolutely loved playing the new COD's and Assassin's Creeds. Another for me was the Saturn. Didn't have a lot of games, but I did have Mega Man X4 and I loved playing it and still do.

    I didn't know what Rocket Knight Adventures was until I you started talking about it in your vids. Console I am most Nostalgic for would be the Sega Genesis. I remember this was the console where I was socializing a lot with my high school friends. Playing games like NHL 93-96, Golden Axe, Mortal Kombat, Street fighter 2 & many other games. The Socializing with couch coop or vs was a thing I used to do every Friday at a friend's house back in high school. Now I work & my friends won't hang with me or with the group anymore. Yeah really sad gaming has come to this.

    Can you get nostalgic for a console you never had? Let me explain: as a child I dreamed of N64 but I couldn't have it due to its high cost. I had to wait 25 years to enjoy the gems of the console catalog, on my notebook with emulator, CRT filters and N64 USB controller. I feel like I implanted memories in my mind (like in the movie "inception") of things I didn't experience as a child but was able to enjoy as an adult. Maybe it's because after the 8 and 16-bit generations I never had another console, I remained a video game "virgin" for 25 years waiting for the long-awaited N64. That's why today the graphics still dazzle me and I prefer them to any modern hyperrealism. They have a unique magic and charm, and I've loved them for so long that I enjoy them more than anything else.
    Man, I love your channel and your content. Thank you!

      Having not owned consoles after the 16-bit era, when I played N64 for the first time during the Covid pandemic, I did so with the eyes, mind and heart of my 9-year-old self. That's why I say it's like I implanted memories in my childhood self. Sometimes I watch N64 videos or ads from the 90s, and it makes me nostalgic as if I had the console back then and not when I was in my 30s. Very curious. I'm glad I fulfilled that dream.

    The Super Nintendo is my most nostalgic console by a long shot - I rented so many games growing up, and the handful of games we had were all really special in their own way - Star Fox, Super Metroid, Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country...such an iconic line-up of games and so many more I discovered as an adult. It really has an amazingly colorful library of games and hidden gems.

    For me it's NES, SNES, and PS2. I had a PS1 but I think the fact that some of those games are a little rough to go back to plus that I was going through some not so great times in my life at the time affects why I don't have as much nostalgia for it. Still a classic system for sure.

    We grew up with the Master System and the NES (Deluxe Set, without SMB). For me, aside from the games I grew up with, the experience of playing it in its original hardware, on a CRT (as I get older I can tolerate the sound the TV emits lol) and the little things as the sounds of fiddling around the drawer for a cartridge and the sound of putting the cartridge in the console. I know there are alternatives such as upscalers that do an admirable job, but for me, the nostalgia comes from the complete experience, and I try my best to replicate it :)

    I'm nostalgic for a lot of gaming related things, even late 90s / early 2000s pc gaming & related hardware. However for consoles I'll always be super nostalgic for the GeniSNES as they collectively were consoles 1 & 2 that I owned, but even more so the N64 due to it being the first console I was exited for before it came out.
    It doesn't hurt that I also got to play Mario 64 & Pilot Wings 64 the summer before it came out in North America at Ontario Place (Canadian theme park that had a Nintendo area), thanks to having an "uncle" that worked there so we'd have free entry all summer long.

    The PS1 is my most nostalgic game console. There are so many games that I played to death growing up, but there's one PS1 game that has stuck with me nearly my whole life.
    My brother got a PS1 for Christmas in 1997. I was 6 years old. My brother only got one game with his PS1, which was Soulblade. (Which was later remade into Soulcalibur. The game also callled Souledge in the US) Soulblade was the first fully 3D game I had ever seen, and it blew me away. I remember watching the opening cinematic over and over again because it was so cool to me. Whenever I get nostalgic for my PS1, I play Soulsblade, and it takes me back to a time when something so simple was the best thing in the world to me.
    I highly recommend watching the opening cinematic for Soulblade it perfectly captures the epicness of the game itself and introduces its characters to you in an unforgettable imaginative way.

    I am nostalgic for the Atari 2600 and NES. I spent many, many hours playing on my Atari. Back when I first got the 2600, I thought I was in gaming heaven. Now I could have an arcade experience without having to bring a pocketful of quarters. Come to think of it....I am kinda nostalgic for arcades. Funny how that works... As for the NES, it was the console of choice when I got together with my friends. We would play Tecmo Bowl tournaments....fun times!
