I was thinking that because the name of the song is "infection" it could be like imposter versions of the mushrooms that grow on plants and zombies. Sort of like a Worse Infection where it is much more hard to defend and not get infected via spores. Chomper was just one of the first to fall.

Aquí veo que te inspiraste en qué en el mundo real los hongos son en realidad parásitos que aparecen en plantas y hierba, además de que esto también aplica en juegos con zombis, me gusta este detalle de que las setas solares nos traicionen aunque también me suena esta historia a Teuthida
Posdata: Soy fan tanto de Plantas contra Zombis como de Sonic
Algo que se de los hongos es que: el título de "el organismo vivo más grande del mundo" se lo ha ganado un hongo, existiendo debajo del suelo de un bosque en forma de "micelio" (que es algo así como las raíces/cuerpo de un hongo, mientras que las setas son el "fruto" del mismo, su "aparato reproductor", por asi decirlo), aquél gigantesco micelio se ubica en un bosque enorme, con árboles tan altos como un edificio de al menos tres pisos, ahora bien, ayudando a mantener a aquél bosque vivo, sirviendo para conectar a todos los árboles, haciendo que compartan sus nutrientes entre sí absorbiendo lo que el micelio tomaba de ellos, manteniéndose un cadena (o algo así, eso último es lo que asumo yo)
Recuerdo haber oído del micelio en el canal de un sujeto llamado Lulyeah, el tipo estaba hablando de algo de Minecraft y pues...bueno, sé me quedó esa historia

Dios. Mío, la intro de la canción hace que se me pongan los pelos de punta, es magistral cómo has usado los instrumentos de pvz. Por otro lado, me encanta el como has adaptado la idea de starved con las setas haciéndolo aún inquietante y bastante menos predecible que otras interpretaciones; además, esto no sólo podría ser una amenaza para las plantas, si no que también para los zombis; en conclusión, brutal.
Edit: Ahora que lo pienso, otro nombre para la canción podría ser "Host" (Huésped), ya que aquí no vemos a un depredador cazando a su presa, sino a un parásito con su huésped.

In the ending Repeater goes back to his "Roots" and spams pogo-pea which then kills the Chomper, then he taunts but then he also gets imp-punted + ZPG'd + double sticky explode bomb + sonic mined + heroic ball. Hey just because you saved people doesn't mean you're still hated

based on the name of the song sunshrooms appear to be infecting plants making them aggressive and evil so yes the infected chomper was probably hiding underground and popped out to attack the repeater

So, I did come up with my own pvz Starved concept. Before I tell you the story, let me tell you of some before ideas. Originally it was going to be a zombie (mainly Dr. Zomboss), but I wanted to be a cannibalism and I knew I didn't want it to be about the Zombies. Next I was going to make it about Chomper (like you) but I also didn't like this idea since Chopper was more into flesh instead of veggies. I finally settled on a Peashooter with a Puff Shroom acquaintance. Keep in mind my version of this story is more like the Teuthida story (Mistful Crimson Morning's starved) because it inspired me to make it in the first place.
It was another hectic battle during the night, there was plenty of mushrooms fighting on the field, especially Push Shrooms. The battle got so bad they ended up planting a Doom Shroom. Now usually a Doom Shroom would be harmless to plants, but this Doom Shroom came into contact with a Jack-and-a-box zombie. The collision caused a huge explosion that ended up wiping out both sides, all but one Puff Shroom. He spent awhile looking for food, when he saw a burned Puff Shroom corpse on the ground. With no choice, he ate it. And he, loved it. He started to eat more and more until he became accustomed to it. The affects caused his eyes to turn pitch black and he became a darker shade of purple. He now wanted to eat more than Puff Shrooms but he knew he couldn't do it on his own. So he searched for someone. He finally found Peashooter minding his own business. The Puff Shroom knocked him out and took him to an abandoned green house. When Peashooter woke up, Puff Shroom started to feed him the corpse of another Puff Shroom. After a bit, Peashooter now had become just like him (with the sane side affects).
Puff Shroom and Peashooter teamed up and started to eat many plants at the lawn. Once again, they wanted to eat more. They wanted to eat a hero plant. After some thinking, they finally came to the conclusion that the best plant to eat was Green Shadow. However, they knew that if they tried to attack her, she would destroy them. So, they created a metal Peashooter called Inferno to hunt down Green Shadow. Inferno looked for awhile and found Green Shadow patrolling the city. He started to chase her. Green Shadow saw Inferno and started running away from him. She finally lost him when Peashooter was chasing her on Penny (Crazy Dave's AV). But this wasn't Peashooter, this was Monstrum Viridis (it's in Latin). As Green Shadow was distracted, Inferno ran full force into her. The impacted killed Green Shadow. Inferno and Monstrum Viridis took her body to the abandoned green house. After Green Shadow was gone, the other hero plants noticed she was gone. Nightcap volunteered to go look for her. He found the abandoned green house. He went into the abandoned green house and saw Monstrum and Puff Shroom eating the corpse on the floor and a powered off Inferno next to the wall. He saw this in horror as both Monstrum and Puff Shroom looking at him. He challenged them to a battle. If Monstrum and Puff Shroom win, they get to eat Nightcap, bit if Nightcap wins, then Monstrum and Puff Shroom get turned in. Now Nightcap is fighting for his life (and just to clear the confusion, the Nightcap I'm using is from PVZ Heros, that's why the pronouns are he/him instead of her/she).
