    personally I think this program should have won the free skate. Best combination of technical and artistic - she had Kerrigan's maturity and Baiul's lyrical artistry and balletic movement

      I used to think that also, but Watching this again for the first time in a few years, that mistake on the flip was really ugly... And while she did two triple lutz, the program lacked combinations. Kerrigan did a 3-3 combination, another combination with her salchow and a triple lutz towards the end. Id give Kerriganthe technical nod.
      Artistically though this was a gem, maybe the best of the night.
      I think I'd still try to give her the second place ordinal with Kerrigan first and Bauil third. But there will definitely be people who do not agree.

    I read that since experienced skating coaches were non existent in China, Chen Lu and her coach learned skating together by watching skating films and videos. Beautiful performance.

      she had canadian skating choreographer and all her costume are designed by US designer and made in USA. the “ coach “ is more like a manager. they got governmental fundings to do whatever they want.

    When was she considered not artistic?
    This women exudes the definition of artistic. Nothing is forced and she actually interprets & feels the music. What do expect from a sport that originated in western euro-centric culture, that is so subjective & would do anything to hold up the status quo, even though she was exquisite & more interesting to watch. Her programs from start to finish are so well choreographed & executed. Seriously, her opening move grabs your attention right away.
    She got the memo, read memo & exceeded it's expectations & still they wouldn't give her her flowers.
    Yet I would not be surprised if videos of her performances, as well as Yamaguchi, Kwan & even Cohen are the most viewed to this day when it comes to skating.

    Chen was better than Kerrigan that night, by a long shot.

    Truly magnificant.

    Your the first opinion I respect and agree with, but at the end of the day Baiul's heart won through quick dance steps and hips. It's not just about the hands anymore.

      you couldn't go wrong with either, they BOTH out classed Nancy/Tonya.

    I'm confused...how did this not beat Oksana Baiul? lol

    • @pamelabacker2420

      Harding didn't deserve it. She didn't earn it! Baiul rightfully won gold. Her skating was much better, than anyone's.

    • @Demetri450
      @Demetri450 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because Baiul represented the status quo they wanted to uphold.
      She shimmed, shaked, wiggled & basically offered up her assets for everyone to get a piece.
      The girl was sexualized from the moment her skating career started.
      Just go back & listen to how commentators, especially the men, talked about her over her skating career. The judges supposedly comments were sometimes creepy, focusing on her looks.
      I'm surprised there has never been a serious skating abuse scandal over the years.

    I saw this live on television back in '94. It was like a joke, in the end. Comedy. The results really should be (in the LP): 1. Kerrigan 2. Chen 3. Sato 4. Szewczenko

      I also think Kerrigan should be first & Chen second!!!!!& i dont think that Baiul deserved EVEN BRONZE!!!!!Maximum bronze!!!!!!Sombody just payed for baiul's medal!!!!!

    • @natew5694
      @natew5694 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      maybe if Kerrigan had done her triple flip....

    • @sbe79
      @sbe79 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kerrigan was too wooden artistically and too underwhelming technically to win. I'd have likely handed the medal to Lu Chen. Two good Lutzes (the others did only one), all of the leading women screwed up the Flip. Kerrigan, second. Baiul, third. Sato could have fought it out for the lower 2 medal spots and I"d have not complained. If she hadn't botched the short, we'd be looking at a very different competition for all involved. Szewchenko was never very good and need not be mentioned.

    • @charliesimpson3879
      @charliesimpson3879 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Baiul definitely deserved and earned that gold medal with both of her programmes. Kerrigan’s free skate was a bit stiff and nervous but her short was her best ever performance. Chen lu deserved bronze ahead of Bonaly. Everything ended the way it should have. And Baiul DEFINITELY didn’t pay for gold medal she combined technical talent with artistic perfection

      @@charliesimpson3879 Oksana Baiul had mistakes on her Technical and Free progarms...The artistry for the Free as childish...She should have been no higher than Fourth.

  • @pamelabacker2420
    @pamelabacker2420 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think a few people on here, are resentful, over Baiul, deserving of gold, while at the same time, putting scapegoat Harding, on a pedestal.

    • @sbe79
      @sbe79 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wouldn't put Harding on a pedestal, per se. If you had a competition of who could deliver the best Lutz... she'd be it. Her Lutz was the best of the competition. She wasn't awful artistically, though I questioned the use of "Jurassic Park" (if you're going to spend the money on a major--composer, blockbuster-soundtrack... nothing better came to mind?!? Jurassic Fucking Park?)
      Her Triple Axel omission be damned, if she hadn't pulled a "meh" on the Loop and had actually performed the 2A/3Toe combo, we might have different conversations here. She'd still have had a chance to be discussed amongst the top. Her spins were better than the any of the competitiors, aside from Yuka Sato. All 3 of the medalists were shitty spinners, though Chen hit the best layback position of them -- but it was too brief in display. That, I think, held her back for her career: Lu Chen's layback was always well-placed, the first ONE second was gold... then it kinda was over. She couldn't HOLD it.

  • @mikeg8375

    She was the only lady in the competition to land 2 triple lutz, but the mistake on the flip was ugly, and there were no direct combinations, just a somewhat shaky sequence in the first jumping pass. I would have put her 2nd in the long, with Kerrigan first and Bauil third, as a minority of the judges did.
