    I'm glad you're telling the truth here.
    Japanese companies can be just as unimaginative and cash-grabbing as their Western counterparts.
    The difference here is that Bandai's practices haven't caught up to them yet BUT that "other HUGE sci-fi franchise" in the West is in decline because of the cash-grab mentality.
    IE, Star Wars toys are selling poorly because of lack of thought and quality put into them as much as the fact they're based off films that certainly don't excite the majority of the hardcore fanbase.

    While there are a lot of plotholes in Twilight Axis, the construction of the Tristan is not quite how you describe. The Tristan was not built with parts of the Alex, but rather developed with data from the Alex and the Gundam Mk II, and was not actually built on Axis, but on a private colony owned by the Buch Concern (the ones who organized the Birnam Corp. and would eventually back the Crossbone Vanguard)
    All of this aside, I agree with you and thoroughly enjoyed the video, thanks for the great upload!

      The RGM-89 units they operate also c contain features that would later be refined on the Berga line of MS like the Dual optical sensors, the additional targeting sensor over one "eye" , and the beam Lance / rifle leading to Crossbone vanguard's signature shot lancer.

      @@pilotamurorei Well, it's almost impossible for Bandai to lose their fanbase since they're the primary Gundam licensee and pretty much the only main Gunpla manufacturer. No matter how much I hate how Bandai handle the PBandai releases, I'm still going to buy Gunpla nevertheless.
      As for Hathaway's Flash, I'm kind of happy about it. We're getting the HG Gustav Karl (although it's a Unicorn Ver.) so maybe there's a chance that we'll be seeing a HG Me-02R Messer sometime in the future as well. Though I did hear lots of outcry from Gundam fans demanding for Crossbone to be animated instead of Hathaway's Flash. I never cared much for Crossbone tbh. The whole series just rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe it's the mecha design, idk.

It really seems bandai is trying to make gunpla exclusive to japan, perhaps start the second japanese isolationism by looking at the new usual releases(Nearly all of the announced gunpla in december were P-Bandai.). I honestly thought this would be Bandai's way of making a Revive NT-1 Alex, where the Tristan would be an entirely new mold, then they'd release an updated Alex sometime down the line, similar to how they did the Mega-Shiki, then later came out with the new Hyaku Shiki.
    The Tristan may have the exact same price as the older HGUC Alex (1500 Yen), but it's far less value for your money, as the Alex came with optional Chobham Armor, and for the love of God, its arm gatlings don't even deploy like the Alex's does. This kit's a downgrade no matter how you look at it :(

  • @Tiro1000
    @Tiro1000 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Thanks for this video. I agree that the Tristan is a lot more forgivable than the Deep Striker. But I also agree that they took the worst part of a 15 year old kit, and slapped it into a new kit and called it a new release. It was a just plain poor decision for the Tristan. There were plenty of other kits they could have picked from. An example being the Jegan, which is what at first glance I thought the Tristan was based off of. Another easy one would be even the revive Mk II.
    I really thank you though, for what you said about casual modelers. I myself am a casual modeler. I fill in panel lines and paint over nip marks, and that's about all the paining I do if it's not a custom project. I have had a fair few conversations with the elitists of the hobby, so hearing that makes me feel better. This video was very enjoyable. I look forward to more of your discussion videos.

    Btw, I like the Twilight Axis novel. I think it's a good and interesting story. Also, it provides some kind of answers about what the hell happened to Axis (and probably even Amuro & Char's bodies in future chapters) after the events in CCA and it also gives us some kind of origin of the Crossbone Vanguard. Since the novel is still on-going, I'm sure we'll get even more materials regarding those two aspects. The characters are also nice too. I like the MC pair and Mehmed. Tristan's pilot is also interesting.

    Having built this kit I can safely say that while some aspects of the retooling do look nice (i.e: the head sculpt), had Bandai dedicated a little more resources into making this retool it could've been a great model kit. I'm still waiting for Zaku Aurelius to complete his trash to treasure project with the Tristan so people can see the potential this kit has to look awesome for any modeler willing to put in the extra effort. It's clear that this kit is made for experienced modelers who are into customization even if it wasn't Bandai's intentions.

    I only just got into the gundam plastic model building, but man, there is so much I don't know about this universe that its almost daunting when I see the sheer number of models to build. So far, the only models I have built so far have been the Gundam Wing Endless Waltz Death Scythe and Heavyarms and the original GW series Epyon (With a few Zoids models thrown in since I liked that franchise).. I can say I'm not bad, but I need to probably invest in some stands to hold up the models upon completion. I'm not really a painter, so the only thing I can possibly rely on are any kind of decals kits sometimes offer.

    My thoughts exactly about how much people are spending and how little(in this day and age of gun pla) you’re getting back. No LEDs, abysmal color separation on new parts, etc. If I’m paying more than a PG, it better be top notch. This is just a cash grab for the fan boys.

    Please keep up this thougtful insight format. It´s new and interesting. Plus we´ve already got our fair share of reviewers spinning their Gundam´s heads 360 degrees... (sigh).
    As for the "brick kit" critique, it is indefensible. The bare notion to call a model trash because nothing moves or doesn´t stand by is own power is ludicrous. Gunpla are model kits, not toys. Though admittely, Bandai´s amazing engineering does blur that line, on models the emphasis is still on "representation" rather than durabilty and playability. They are supposed to sit on a shelf and look cool for you to admire. As your collection grows, you´ll play less with your models, so in the end, even the most articulate kit ends up as a glorified statue.
    That said, I am too of your mindset about the Deep Striker. Although I doubt a beginner would shell out 20000 yen for a try out (hahaha). Deep Striker is a heavily how-much-do-you-like-Gundam Sentinel-taxed cash grab aimed at the hardcore elitist collectors. Bandai expected them to justify the mark up in their own minds, and they did. Bandai didn´t bother to include atractive features for the casual collector. To justify the asking price, aside from the features you mentioned, they could have used slide molding for the long barrel, tool inner frame for the extended parts, and open hatch gimmicks to expose said inner frame. Instead, we got HG armor shells surrounding what little of a MG was left. And with that portion rendered practically inmobile, the benfits of it being the MG drops to zero. This kit would have been better served as a RE/100.
    But wait! The shoulder armor slides but a smidgen! It doesn`t reveal any mechanical details, or changes the profile much, but who cares, it moves!!! Forget everything I said, for only 20000 yen, this thing is steal!!! MWAAAHAHAAHAHA!

The owner/manager was looking to sell all of his models and get rid of stocking them, so I talked him down to $150 when he had it on sale for $199. Also helped that I purchased another five kits he had there. Paid out $400 for about $750 worth of kits, so I was happy, he was happy that he 'got rid of this dying hobby from his store' (his words), and I finally got the Deep Striker for a decent price.

      It's a Nero, which is the Sentinel GM. No official kits of it exist, sadly, only action figures.

      Theyre rehash and the market for them is mostly for younger gundam fans. Their prices are fairly reasonable as well.

    How bout a discussion with kits that have different names on the box but 100% similar on the parts in the box a good ex would be the 2 wing ew kits , sinanju ova ver and ver ka and some unicorn. Full armor not included.

    • @citrusjuicebox
      @citrusjuicebox  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you already named the only examples: Unicorn/Sinanju Ver. KA/OVA, Wing Ver. Ka/EW. I'm not sure if there's much to say there.

    • @karloverg
      @karloverg 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      well i think it would be a good discussion since recently a friend of mine tag along to buy some kits at our local hobby store and was planning on buying a MG sinanju for his 2nd MG and saw the 2 versions of the kit and ask me which should he get the price on the kits are different with the ova ver a little expensive by 3% compared to the ver ka. and ask me another question why the 2 versions? and i just said printing money which i pulled out of nowhere for a lame reasoning.

    • @citrusjuicebox
      @citrusjuicebox  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sinanju OVA costs more because it includes the rocket bazooka, which the Ver. Ka does not. The OVA box advertises it pretty clearly.

    A lot of gunpla prices in this day and age is high because nobody sells at Market retail price. My guess is Bandai did not have a lot of faith on the Deep Striker returning money, so they sold it as much as they can maximize profits.

    Deep Striker fans: Nooooo, you can't justify our dream kit being lazy modified trash by the price tag !!

    Where all those good videos did disappear? Why haven't I noticed those before? No matter.
    Every time I see a shameful Bandai attempt to milk more money, every time I see how this depravity keeps evolving further and further towards obscurity. Don't get me wrong, I like to see unused designs in new light and have nothing against usage of old molds as long as this works. But not in the way Bandai make you take a bite. When I heard of release of Deep Striker MG, I was shocked, pleasantly and disappointing way both. If first was innovative reason, second one was solely a material one. Which of course isn't a secret. Price, shipping expenses and custom fee will kill all good what left in hard-earning enthusiast's heart.
    The problem, as you mentioned, that Bandai asks modern price for used, by all means aged, parts! Most likely new mold, 100%, would work almost flawless, but not in this case. Could've that be a premium Bandai release and also poor excuse like low request capacity by customers? I think that would be more understandable and people would really think twice before buying whole thing as NEW item. What really pisses me, except fact that I can't afford it, that people gladly rushed to buy it without any complaints beforehand. Consider this karma? Perhaps. Does it looks good - yeah, does it justify as product - less likely, not for such price. If that would be me, I would gladly buy a PG.
    Considering Tristan case, there is also a machinations by Bandai by making ,,new" series supported by ( not so new) releases. What can be better? Half baked anime with half invested efforts in new HG line? Perfect business model! But here's difference between Deep Striker and Tristan. Price tag. If on one you can turn blind eye, then second one as never should've been close to perfect.
    Now then, despite old parts on Tristan, you still can make it shine and look good as RG. But you must invest. And invest as a price of good MG value one. Most builders don't mind this. But it depends solely on personal point of view and Bandai knows this. And as always it's purely up to people what they want to do. Personally I do no consider Twilight Axis as original Gundam lore and I'm totally fine by this, tou my rusty gears screech a bit every time I remember Brigham Jegan type. But this is just blind love towards GM types.
    Peace. Great stuff as usual.

    My complaint with the HG Tristan is that it just ugly. The HG Alex, while old and limited in movement, gimmicks, and part separation, is such a sharp and beautiful sculpt. The Tristan is anything but, looking flat and cheap. Some of this is just down to the art/design I'm sure, but I can't help but feel like they could have done a much better job bringing it into 3D
