- 1933 में जवाहर लाल नेहरू ने महात्मा गांधी को एक पत्र में लिखा था, "जैसे जैसे मेरी उम्र बढ़ती गई है धर्म के प्रति मेरी नज़दीकी कम होती गई है". 1936 में नेहरू ने अपनी आत्मकथा में लिखा, "संगठित धर्म के प्रति हमेशा मैंने दहशत ही महसूस की है. मेरे लिए हमेशा इसका मतलब अंधविश्वास, पुरातनपंथ, रूढ़िवादिता और शोषण से रहा है जहाँ तर्क और औचित्य के लिए कोई जगह नहीं है". लोकतंत्र में धर्म के प्रति नेहरू की सोच की पहली अग्नि परीक्षा 1950 में हुई जब राष्ट्रपति राजेंद्र प्रसाद ने नेहरू की इच्छा के ख़िलाफ़ गुजरात में सोमनाथ मंदिर के जीर्णोद्धार समारोह में जाने का फ़ैसला किया. ये वही मंदिर था जिसे 10वीं सदी में महमूद गज़नवी ने नेस्तानुबूद करके लूट लिया था. नेहरू ने राजेंद्र प्रसाद के सोमनाथ जाने का इस आधार पर विरोध किया था कि एक धर्मनिरपेक्ष राष्ट्र के शासनाध्यक्ष को इस तरह के धार्मिक पुनरुत्थानवाद के साथ अपने को नहीं जोड़ना चाहिए. प्रसाद नेहरू की इस सलाह से सहमत नहीं हुए थे.
