The art of misdirection is literally one the most essential parts of comedy. Not being able to anticipate the punchline, is what makes him so funny.

My philosophy professor used to say, “something is funny when it is the unexpected juxtaposition of two dissimilar ideas.” What comes to mind is the kind of observational humor in Seinfeld. Seemingly random events come together at the end to form a coherent punchline. The expectation is subverted. Misdirection is another form of this phenomenon.

@@Ivar-V that’s a good definition for humor. I’ve also called this “when surprise meets familiarity” which I think is almost the same idea

Hi, I hope you're well. I enjoyed this and another contender for greatest misdirection exponent is Emo Philips. He absolutely pleasures my funny bone!!

I think a deep dive into one norm joke would be better than an overview type video, loads of those about, maybe the Saget roast. Like how there that Rewind series about sports

Jeselnik's jokes are so perfect, he can only write about 5 per year. He reminds me of Jimmy Carr who has a similar "worst person ever" persona, but keeps the structure simpler and puts out what feels like 20 jokes a day. Both are great in their own field, but I'm afraid that Jeselnik will have trouble producing new material eventually. He might have to switch to simpler jokes that require less setup and give the audience less time to process before they're hit with the punchline. But I hope he can keep it up for some more time and I like that he calls out the cheap tricks of other comedians.

@@emulgatorx yeah I agree, I think anything Jeselnik can do to mix it up would be fun

I believe the observation that audience wont trust you, if you create too much of a lie when doing a misdirect is true. You followed that up by saying the 'harder' the misdirect the less an audience will trust you. I think this part is wrong. You can paint a very clear scene, have then zoom out and reveal something completely different and no part of the audience will believe you have just lied to them. The lie comes from a scene being painted that does not make the reveal satisfying. The zoom out payout has to be worth the scene painted. This being worth it does not matter in comparison to the lie. It's easy to prove this because it can be completely true. Both the scene painted and the zoom out. However, the audience will not have realized the target assumption they made until after you zoom out. Start with a dude showering in a standard looking bathroom, zoom out, he's in an ikea bathroom section, zoom out again you realize he built an ikea within his home with everything including the logos, employees etc... The beauty of anthony jesselniks ability is to hide where the target assumption was created. You are trying to catch it, but you don't realize it has already passed you, and if you do catch it. You then try to predict the outcome but it's better than what you were thinking of.... You have to be 2 steps ahead of the zoom out. It's the same with magic, a good magician is not better at slight of hand, he's not better at misdirection, he's better at making you believe you know how the trick is done and then he reveals one last zoom out that destroys your entire assumption. I enjoyed the video. keep making more. I would argue go deeper with your analysis... it will set you apart from others. Reviewing more comedians won't really do their work justice.

I've never liked him at all until he started calling out the Rogan cult of extremely unfunny comedy. If he turn that up to 11 he would go to the Moon. True comedy fans hate all those Rogan comics. Ari, Bert, Tom, Bryan, Theo, Tony and Joe are not even a little funny. Theo had a moment but now hes a LARPing lesbian. Normand is ok. Gillis had a moment but now he is awful. These terrible Netflix shows with his horrible acting. If jeselnik got Schaub to leave the cult and go full heel people would love them both. As hated as Schaub is, if he went pure hate against the crew he would turn it around. Then youd see people follow and finally have the balls to tell the truth . Order to chaos!
