I use the Handcrafted labs Varis, Stam audio mkii 4000 and APi. This combo is totally amazing and the looptrotter monster for kicks and bass sometimes pads and guitars.
This is a great video. Super well done. I sold my API 2500 and regret it, and i picked up the stam recently for a good price, need to add that 2500 back onto the drum bus! Also please ignore the stupid comments on your voice, theres nothing wrong with it. I have constant vocal fry as well :)
I have the other Chandler TG1 compressor in a two TG Microphone Cassette setup I use for tracking. The soft knee can be subtle or disrespectful. The hard knee can really shatter your kicks and snares’ presence
The API 2500 in old mode, hit hard, was my favorite. The Stam 1176 sucked down on the snare too hard for my tastes, but I could see it being awesome in parallel. The Chandler added some pretty cool saturation. I didn't really have strong feelings about the Stam SSL, which is odd because I usually like SSL-style compression. It just didn't have that much character. I know that's kind of the point with VCA compressors, but I wanted more out of it, especially when you were hitting it hard. Maybe that's a point in its favor. At one point you were doing 12 db of gain reduction and it didn't sound nearly as intense as some of the other compressors.
Awesome video. The shootout was fantastic but the evil scientist voice narrating and contemplating during the process just added to the fun. If you know, you know... 👊
great video! i think i'll buy an API 2500+ .. it will be your fault if i'm not happy with it ;) the SSL sounds cool too .. maybe i get one later.. the combination is really cool
SSL (or ssl-style) G-Comps / GSSL's / whatever do not do very well under heavy pressure. Anything beyond 4-6db on hard peaks is going to be a pumping mess of epic proportions. Great on drum bus (using the HPF to keep the kick from subterfuging the detection circuit), maybe not so much on a very dynamic mix. The Stam 4000-II is a fantastic comp, though I gotta admit it lives mostly on my bass bus, it just has a magic to it.
The API always a no brainer on a hard drum bus. I also thought the Fab filter C2 sounded great... perhaps a little too long on the release bur very tweakable.
Hey there ! Nice video :) Love your collection of hardware. It's hard to beat API's timing and envelope on drums. It frames the drums so well. I would love a compressor which could bring more detail on that, and different colours. SSL has that lovely tight smack but can't be pushed hard. Germanium had a lovely heft to it, but the shape wasn't really useful for a drum bus, maybe on parallel it would add a nice thickness. Compex is possible if it can be dialed in right, and Spectra was just lovely. Thanks for the video ! Would you ever consider doing a hardware vs software shootout ? Like, finding the best plugin version of the hardware and comparing it to the hardware ? Those videos are always popular, and it's useful to hear a comparison before the marketing departments have corrupted them 😂
Chandler sounded great to me. I’m not a fan of that 2500 sound. Also, sorry if I’m offending you by asking this, but do you usually talk like that, or is it something you do on purpose?
I’m a big fan of the Germanium Comp as well, especially when it comes to box tone, nothing else even comes close. No offence taken, I usually speak German though so make of that what you will. 😉
@@knobsandcables I appreciate you not taking offence. I was genuinely asking. I wasn’t talking about your accent, nor your voice. It’s that vocal fry thing you do haha. Your voice is good and accent is as well. 🤗
cool. i liked the API but the SSL had good snap. the chandler had sort of a fat bubble that bugged me, not sure if the release was too long or what. i just discovered your channel, enjoyed your personality
@@emuhunter1Your content is excellent! The issue is with your voice. Vocal fry is wearing on the ears, and lots of people will click away because of it.
this is some high quality content! Thank you very much.

Great video. Thank you!! The 2500 is a great sounding unit.
Would have liked to have seen a Distressor in this group. Good shootout.
oh my god I simply cannot survive this way of talking sorry. aaaahhh sooooo I aaaaaaammm. .... no way
Thanks for the awesome video. I’m a gear freak! More shootouts please

Wicked video! Love to hear more about that islander!
Do you think you will make more comparison videos? This video is so well produced!
API 2500+ with the built in MIX knob
1176 no doubt. Is alive! But that fast release makes the snare's reverb sounds too long. Perhaps better a bit longer release time for that sound.

its great on the masterbus and mixbuss to keep ur mix glued, I use the api for character.

Wow, nice taste and gear... suscribed!

Other than her narration mic aimed right at her throat, this was an excellent video!!!
Try subtitling instead of talking, if people make more comments on narration on compressor shootout 🎉
Which compressor did you like best?
Api

Am i the only one who prefers the dry signal in this example?
UA API 2500 would have been Cool.

The magic of the Chandler is in the harmonics it gives and mix knob!
Denn 2500 kling einfach viel zu gut
very nice test, i liked the api old the most. btw are you male or female?
Non binary
It would be better if you were silent. Or is this a newfangled neural network? You creak like an ungreased door. )))
I recently mixed a track with the PA Shadow Hills class A on the drum buss. Great results!
Your voice uses so much vocal "fry" that an otherwise excellent channel is unlistenable.
That’s not a very friendly comment.
@@emuhunter1Your content is excellent! The issue is with your voice. Vocal fry is wearing on the ears, and lots of people will click away because of it.
It sounds like they compressed the living hell out of the narrator's voice. lol
@@rhamlyn100 it’s not my content, I just don’t think what you said to them was nice.
@@emuhunter1 I made a suggestion about how they present their material. If you can listen to a voice like this, fill your boots.
Sorry but the way you edited your voice is just terrible man. Great video but that was a bit stressful
I lasted 10 seconds.
Thats just the way a lot of millenials talk, don't be ageist guys!
