The Wall is about a British kid whose father was killed in WW2, and the songs in order tell the story of his childhood, being a mama's boy, ostracized in school for being imaginative and nonconforming, growing up to be a rock star, touring the United States, missing his mom, but feeling free from her at the same time, cheating on his wife who is also cheating on him, being so doped that he can't perform for his gig, so his doctor gives him different medicines that enable him to perform, he ends up losing touch with reality, withdraws inside himself, and builds a wall around himself so he won't have to deal with the things he just can't deal with anymore, so anybody who wants to interact with him personally is out of luck.

So, when this album came out in 1979,I was in college. Our psych professor brought in his stereo from home and we listened and analyzed the entire album for a couple weeks. It is the story of a guy who's father was killed in war and raised by his over protective mother. It follows his decent into madness and internment in a psych ward. The album is also a continuous loop !! The ending of side 4 was cut off and spliced onto the intro to the first song, so the downfall to madness can begin at any point in life. Heavy stuff. Like so many others, you really should take the time and hear it full through without interruption.

Seconded! This album has to be experienced in its entirety. With The Who’s “Tommy” and Rush’s “2112” (& “Hemispheres”) it’s the pinnacle of the concept album (organized around a cohesive theme) where it’s a complete story. It’s such an epic introspective journey. I first heard it as a kid, but it honestly took me years to digest it. Every time I hear it I get something new out of it and it never disappoints!

This song in the movie "Pink Floyd's The Wall" is absolutely terrifying. The main body of the song follows a gang of Pink's fascist followers (known as "Hammers") as they wreak havoc on innocent citizens. It switches back and forth between that and watching one of his "concerts", which are really just Nuremberg-style Hitlerian fascist gatherings, where the "fans" stamp their feet while doing complicated hand gestures that end in a straight-armed salute. (Notice the chant "Hammer! Hammer!" at the end of the song. They're not cheering the band - they're psyching themselves up for mayhem after the show.) It's horrifying, a thousand times more NOW than it was in 1980 when this came out. Watch the film some time - it'll freeze your blood cold.

In the context of the movie I think the main character's father was killed in World War 2 and may have something to do with this scene. If you have not seen it, you guys really need to watch the movie PINK FLOYD THE WALL , it makes all these songs make a lot more sense, because the double album is a Rock Opera that tells a story of the life of a rock star from childhood to adult. There is very little dialog, the songs tell the story. It is awesome and the imagery is fantastic. Love what you guys do, as an old guy that grew up in the 70's I really like seeing y'all enjoying all these great songs from my youth.

At some point you guys are going to need to listen to "The Wall" in its entirety from beginning to end. They are telling a story about a guy named Pink and his relationship with the world and his Mother. Preferably vinyl as there are no breaks between songs - only from one disc to the next. 😎

The Album, Live Performances and tye Film used the art of Gerald Scarfe, whose favourite subject at the time may have been Margaret Thatcher.

Even though PF did partake of drugs to various degrees at various times, this album is really about withdrawing into yourself so far that you start treating the outside world as full of enemies to suppress.
