  • Hi everyone!
Earlier today, I was just looking on google to see if it was possible to run the Doom 3 BFG edition on Windows 2000, since it runs on XP, when I came across this Reddit post on the Doom subreddit from someone named tundraportal asking about finding a video on Vanilla doom 3 running on windows 2000. Apparently, this person only ever played Doom 3 on XP, 7, and 10, but not on 2000, and he could not find any footage of it online. So, I figured I would do a whole video on my secondary fairly modern rig, featuring an i3 9100f and EVGA GTX 460, dual booting 2000 Advanced Server and 8.1 Pro. Also, I did a little bit of playthrough of the first level (Mars City 1), but I didn't do much because I had to record with my phone, as Bandicam was not cooperating today.
I also brought up that NVIDIA was obviously being VERY shady by making us think that the GeForce 7 series was the last series that had a Windows 2000 driver, when in reality, you can use the NVIDIA 258.96 XP driver on 2000 just fine, other than the HD audio driver, where it would cause a bluescreen as it is not compatible with 2K. All you can do is manually extract the driver using 7-Zip to a new folder, and install it using the device manager. Also, once it is installed and you reboot, and you log back in, you should disable the NVIDIA driver service, as it is unnecessary, and you will be stuck on "Preparing Network Connections" for a long time when Windows first boots. This driver will work fine on vanilla Windows 2000 SP4.
    As for the audio/ethernet?
The Gigabyte B365 DS3H motherboard has onboard Realtek audio and ethernet, which has official drivers for as far back as 2000. On Realtek's website, it may only go as far back as XP, but the XP driver package also has a 2000 package. Realtek is awesome!
For the USB and SATA, I used modded Intel drivers from an MSFN forum (all links are below). The SATA driver can be integrated using nLite, but the USB driver will not work by being integrated. You will need a PS/2 keyboard and a CD/DVD drive to install 2000. After this, you can burn the USB driver .7z file and the executable of the latest 32 bit version of 7zip. Once you install 7zip, you can extract the 7z file with the USB drivers, and then use the PS/2 keyboard to navigate to the device manager, where you should be able to install these drivers. Now, keep in mind that these USB drivers will NOT work with ACPI or PAE enabled. These drivers should work with Intel, AMD, and VIA USB3 controllers, and they work without the extended kernel or core. I have not tested it on AMD or VIA controllers, but I am going based off of what Daniel K in the forum said. Also, I am not 100% sure about Intel USB3 controllers newer than the 300 series, because when I tested it on my 12900k with an ASUS Z690 motherboard, I got a "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" BSOD. I have not tested it on 400 or 500 series boards. Oddly enough, the Intel SATA driver modded by the same guy worked just fine on my 600 series board, so maybe it does work somehow. Daniel posted these "beta" drivers in January 2020, so I wouldn't count on at least the USB drivers working beyond the 300 series.
In the future, I would like to make a more in-depth video about running newer programs on Windows 2000, including how to install the extended kernel, and some of BWC's other modded software. So stay tuned!
