The PROs and CONs of a Modern Black House

  • There is a lot to consider when thinking about the possibility of choosing the color black for your house, but after weighing the pros and cons I’m confident we made the right decision.
    Let’s go deeper through the pros and cons as well as try to answer some of the many questions that I know we had going into it, like are some siding options better than others? Does the sun and heat affect it? Etc.
    The family and I have always loved the modern rustic style and we were getting ready to make the move from a pretty ordinary suburban street to a more rural area, we just felt like we needed to get a little closer to nature. While exploring home design options I kept seeing black exterior houses popping up. It seemed like a bold move so we had to do a bit of research first before we made a big decision...
    The exterior house paint we used was Valspar from Lowes in the "Very Black" color (5011-2). It was a Flat/exterior, Valspar Duramax exterior paint + primer.

    Really like your channel. I started looking for Japanese garden designs because we are starting landscaping projects at our new house. Then I realized we had more in common after seeing this video. We painted our new house Iron Ore, which is really close to black. We were one of the first in this area (Central Utah) and a lot of people made comments about its boldness. Now similar color homes are popping up even more around us and adding variety to the numerous tan, white and light blue homes around us. Enjoying your content .

      Thank John! Much appreciated. I think you have given them courage to explore some different colors. Some people like the conformity and familiarity a developer brings to a planned community, but life is a little more interesting when you can see people's creative expression.

    Thank you for taking the time to make this video. You answered so many questions for me. I'm about to paint my house in the Oregon woods either black or a very dark brown/black and I'm so glad to know you went with a matte finish. It looks great on your place. I'm also glad to see how nice your house looks without painting the trim another color, except for the door. Your work is inspiring!!

    • @ShizenStyle
      @ShizenStyle  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank so much! We debated on doing the trim a different color, you see a lot of black but still with white trim. In the end I'm happy we stayed with all black. It's subtle but you do get variety with different wood patterns going in different directions or different textures used on the house.

      Hi there, that's so cool someone is in the area too. We used to own a garden center on Grand Island and got the lanterns wholesale by the truck load, but we got them from www.stoneagecreations.com/ in Ohio. They have great handmade stuff. One time we split an order with Al from www.orientalgardennursery.com/ near Rochester in Pittsford. He usually has some stone goods around or could at least order some maybe. Cheers!

    I'm painting my exterior black soon!! I'm still debating on the actual paint choice but it will be a black...there's so many to choose from. I'm either going w Iron Ore (dark grey/soft black) or Darkroom by SW (HGTV collection for 2023), which has a purple undertone.

    Nice work!!!! I'd love to know how the paint is holding up and what kind
    you used? Did you use a flat black? Are the windows vinyl? How are the
    window frames holding up? Did you prep the window frames with anything?
    My wife and I have wanted to do this for years! Such a cool look!

    • @ShizenStyle
      @ShizenStyle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, thanks for watching! The paint is holding up well, after a little over 2 years I've just done a few touch up spots where the paint chipped. Like I mentioned though we don't have full sun on the house all day and I think that really helps.
      We used a flat matte black because I wasn't too keen on the shine, but a satin or semi-gloss might be nice too.
      We have both vinyl and wood window frames and the wood are still great. The vinyl I didn't try to paint over, it might need something more like a rustoleum type of paint but it should work ok.
      It's a bold look but it's becoming more popular, go for it!

      I use Valspar Season Flex and/or Valspar Brick and Mortar (in Dearh Valley), my house is partially black. If you want it to look "always fresh", I repaint one solid coat a year. The main issue is dust accumulation and once you give the dust a good cleaning the paint looks kinda eh.. it's like a black car, there is maintenance 😒

    • @DIARRHEA-PANIC
      @DIARRHEA-PANIC ปีที่แล้ว

      Also I recommend flat black, but that's why it gets dusty.. glossy black looks really strange.

      I've heard that EMF-blocking paints are almost exclusively black or dark gray, but it I'm not sure if that means all black paints are naturally EMF blocking. I think it depends on the brand.
