I'm not from the USA so not your typical audience but I have worked in Therapy and also Creative Arts especialy gardening all my 75 years. I love the images you use to illustrate your homilies but I do have some criticism about presentation. We don't need to see more than an occasional glimpse of you and I would exchange long pieces to camera for more voice over pictures of gardens that could be static so we sink into the subject and absorb the information more deeply. You could try speaking just a little more slowly that would also change the flow to something less forcefull with longer pauses to slow our pulse rate. Hope this helps attract more people in quest of the knowlege you seek to impart

Hi, My name in Mats Hagström I live in Northern California where I have been working on developing my knowledge and skills in horticulture focusing of bonsai and garden trees. It is my goal to spend the next 10+ years developing a forest blending in my bonsai collection. While I’m not completely committed to a pure Japanese formal garden I do plan on incorporating a significant amount if Japanese aesthetic ideas and concepts. I find there is very little English written information on the design and development of Japanese garden trees. I don’t know if you do consulting work but perhaps that might be an idea in the future. I’ve been to Japan once and will be going for a second time in February. This time to explore Kyoto and attending the Kokufu ten. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I look forward to seeing the rest of your videos. Mats H

Thank you for your opinion. I have a wide range of musical interests from upbeat and jazzy/hip-hop, ambient, new age, to traditional shakuhachi. I tend to use a blend of all of these. Is the sound editing perfect? Not at all. I need to improve a lot, but I believe music helps create the atmosphere, otherwise it becomes a dry lecture.

I have not had that feeling with photography. But i used to play the violin and practised for hours every day. That feeling you spoke of would happen when i was finally playing a piece of music correctly. Because i had mastered the notes and bowstrokes, i was in the music, not thinking, just playing the music. It was wonderful. Thank you for reminding me of that. It has been a long time.

Hi Josh, I stumbled upon your video by chance and felt compelled to reach out. I’m a commercial photographer, but the past few years have been challenging-I’ve lost several close people and, recently, our 2.5-year-old dog. These experiences have shifted my perspective, and I find myself less interested in chasing jobs or competing with younger, low-cost photographers. Consequently, this has led me to reconsider my direction. I’ve always been drawn to simple, evocative black-and-white imagery, reminiscent of classic analog photography. Recently, I enrolled in the BPSOP course Finding Beauty, which has been refreshingly different and inspiring. During a critique, my instructor used three words to describe my work: asymmetry, zen, and poetry. Curious to explore this further, I started researching my new personal style and stumbled upon the concept of “wabi-sabi” photography. While I’m still learning what it truly means, I’m excited to dive deeper and see where it takes me. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of this concept.

Just a further note I've replied to some commentators. It is important not to take these Japanese principles and 'westernise' them. Zen and Japanese ideas in the West are a Myth. It has been hijacked from the original. Nichiren dictionary reaffirms "The Zen teaching was summarized in these phrases attributed to Bodhidharma: “A separate transmission outside the sutras,” “independent of words or writing,” “directly pointing to the human mind,” In Gassho...

    • @ShizenStyle
      @ShizenStyle หลายเดือนก่อน

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. You’re right that it’s important to respect the roots of these teachings. From my understanding, Zen and Nichiren Buddhism are quite different although they both fall under the Buddhism tree-Zen focuses on direct experience and simplicity, while Nichiren Buddhism emphasizes the Lotus Sutra. Both have their unique perspectives. Zen principles, like mindfulness and simplicity, have influenced Japanese culture deeply, including wabi-sabi and Japanese gardens. When these ideas are shared in the West, hopefully the goal isn’t to change their meaning but to draw inspiration from their essence. I agree it’s important to stay mindful of their origins while exploring their broader applications. Thank you for the reminder!

Dang I picked out 3 boulders for my driveway circle garden and they are each individuals. Missing the wa (harmony). I call them The Prima Donnas ( kind of like the Lone Rangers joke from Airheads). I’m just planting 2 small hinoki and a drift rose and a globe spruce. The stones will be the focal point.

Sounds nice though. If the boulders are a bit bold you can always nestle some boxwoods around them to soften their individuality.

But do you know about the Japanese cultural concept called *shiitake ga nai* ? It's really life changing.

Do you mean Shikata ga nai? As in 'It can't be helped' or acceptance. 'Shiitake ga nai' means you don't have any shiitake mushrooms. Also life changing though.

@@ShizenStyle as a mushroom lover, make sure to buy two packs I stead of one. Can't go wrong

Love your expertise Josh. I wish Wabi-Sabi could be incorporated in life in general… Being a lover/admirer of old things, fall/autumn, etc. I certainly hope I can incorporate the Wabi-Sabi philosophy (if I may call it that) in my photography. Thank you!

I'm glad you like the video Paul. It's the perfect season to really appreciate nature's cycle and try to bring the philosophy into your everyday life. Enjoy the season!

Looks like a lot of Poles down here :) Interesting word, didn't know it.

Haha, that looks like a tough one to pronounce! It's cool that culturally Poland also has words for this nature experience.

I did not know that there was a word to describe the beauty of the light through the trees.
