I am not a resident of Singapore and know very little about Geylang and my little knowledge is the “old” Geylang. This TH-cam reviews a lot to me on the history and development in this area since then. Great production of the video itself showing the many different aspects of the area and what makes Geylang today.
    Good work and well done!!!
    Australian resident.

This episode's research encapsulates a bit of everything to cater to a diverse audience. Loved it! Felt like I was there, getting updated on the latest Spore culture as well as the Sing Ah Beng.

Oh, this is a very good "documentary" about Singapore heritage culture (especially those charming temples!) in unexpected neighbourhoods! Will definitely visit them when I next visit Singapore!!!

Been at a hotel there in 2019 while visiting SG for the first time. Felt safer than in any western European capital's city center.

Was it Hotel 81 ? I’ve stayed there as well In Geylang, it’s pretty safe compared to most western cities & their relight district’s.. But if you go around looking to start trouble, then don’t be surprised you might get a punch to the face!

What a great episode. Thanks for sharing some stories about the other side of Geylang, and great ideas for a weekend visit to check out some pearls like Eng Tiang Huat's store. More thoughtful portraits of the great human stories of Singapore neighborhoods please!

I am 77yo now....born & bred at No.598 Geylang Rd opposite Lorong 33.....schooled at Geylang English School.
    Now in Malaysia.
In 1950s Geylang was peaceful residential areas except the Geylang Rd a two way traffic.
At that time there's no flush toilet but bucket collect by SMC.

The non-stop background music devalues the whole work gone into making this.
Seriously question, what value do the producers see when background music is added, apart from distracting the viewer and drowning out what is being said?

Geylang is the most interesting place in Singapore in my opinion. It is also touted as the new Tanjong Katong, recently many hispter cafe and boutique shop has flourish in this neighbourhood, offer a fresh and vibrant atmosphere!

Very difficult, because prostitution pay higher rent, and the banks are not happy to loan mortgage there.

The Barber shop bit is a bit over dramatised, I have lived in Malaysia between 1980-87 and Singapore was always out weekend getaway twice a month. We had female barber shops in Malaysia and Singapore since 1980 and they ran very well. This is almost insulting that female barbers are looked down upon or appointments cancelled, this is a new thing.

Someday we will decriminalize and stop putting people having sex, down.
We all pay for sex, some pay for just sex in Geylang. Others get married, pay for a huge wedding, and then buy a house, pay for the house to have sex (sometimes)

Very bad! Gaylong has lost interest to everyone looking fur fun in SGP. First time 2007 with me dad, we got our hotel room door knocked after midnight, they'd wake us up. First night, we wouldn't know what was going on, but after the second night we knew what'd happened. We could see all the prozzies walking up the rd from our window. From that trip, walking through the allies towards the malay village, we found indian-type, we guessed bangladeshi old women wrapped in their sari also catering for the indian community. Anyway, greta fun. Back in 2013, was a bit changed, but I was wif me own lady, so couldn't see further. Don't erode the fum, or SGP will be a deserted land for the world's revellers.. hehe

Good on you Nail house owners ( and refusing to talk too!)... please don't completely ruin Geylang as it reminds me of 'old Singapore' in late 70s- early '80s when we were in the Army stationed there.. don't turn Geylang into Yuppie Disneyland

PAP is simply not interested to innovate and swing the balance in favor of the Citizen.
Instead of addressing the total human needs - unhappiness, anxiety, instability, stress, lack of confidence in the future, PAP is narrow in its matrix which focuses on economic, healthcare, and physical environment.
There was no clear strategy however to address Singaporeans’ employment anxieties, persistent since the watershed GE2011. The groundswell unhappiness then was due to unfettered mass immigration (as opposed to selective immigration), complaints of discrimination against citizens in securing jobs by foreigners who are gaming the system. These anxieties never abated.
