Chris O Its not the same my friend, b5 s4 got a v6, the b7 rs4 is a v8, the engine sits way more in front, also the b5 s4 got modified rear LSD, probably more lock, so its easier to loose traction on the rear when doing donuts
Yep the new ones are much better, i consider a b8 s4 for my next car actualy :) GTR is a different story tho, its nearly perfectly corner weighted without suspension :) Every car has modified suspension on weight differences in corners, GTR has nearly perfect corner weights without the suspension needing to be adjusted for that, only dedicated sports cars are engineered like that, u cant really compare a family sedan that needs to be evrythign with that :P But good point
ttcro22 - That's my point. Adding Ohlins suspension and a tight rear LSD would make a profound improvement in the RS4's balance. The RS4's V8 hardly weighs more than the iron block V6.
deff is as well why I bought a blacked out murdered black rims tints it's so gangster iam in heaven on Sat 30 hr trip to Montreal the happiest of been in 20 years
The mechanical whine on that engine comes from the location of the timing chains. They are very close to the firewall and do produce a nice sound. Different that a turbo or supercharger, but still nice. Edit: Actually, it's due to the AC compressor, water pump, power steering pump and oil pump all being shaft driven with straight cut gears, rather than being driven by belts like on a normal car.

I had this car when I was 19. let me tell you it is the most special car to drive in the canyons. It does have a bit of understeer but that makes you a better driver by having to go slower into the corners and learning how to control the car.
this video made me add one to the stable . got one with 58k miles , doing all the maintenance now! as my 7 year old hates driving in the back of my 911 turbo. wife's loves it too. so its a win.
Matt, Always been a fan of your perspective, keep up the one-takes. Finding the cool cars is the inherent value, not the fancy camera work, even though that does add to the video.
This is one of the best roads to drive on me and my buddy's used to come up there all the time and drive that thing at night it's just 12 miles of twisty's to us matt farah ran it backwards because we usually start at pch. That dirt spot at the beginning of the video is our "winner's circle" next to the malibu cafe sign
The tire squealing would have fit in well in a Steve McQueen car chase, except this was real. If only you could pass the same VW beetle five times and show the car loosing the same hubcap over and over = Bullitt. Another great one take, thank you Matt and Smoking Tire crew.
That was an excellent video. I've had a 2007 RS4 for two years, it was really nice standard but I added a Milltek non res which massively improved the exhaust note. Only other mod was brake upgrades. I live in rural nother Scotland and this car handles all weathers. Its especially good in the winter with the Vredestien winter tyres, it road holding is insane! You should come to Scotland and do a video of the NC500 road trip in the Scottish Highlands, and do it in a real American Muscle car. I really want to do that canyon road on a motorbike, looks epic! Nice driving by the way.
What you said is true, and the dashboard is never getting old. I had an s-line Avant same color, very beautiful car for the time, I had it ears ago, by 2010 it was 4 years old, and the dash was so modern for the time, Most interesting part, without the navigation(could be still possible to order) this same dash was there on the A4 B6, which is a 2002 year model. This means that a 2002 year model Audi dash is more modern than a Japanese 2010.
I really like these types of videos, I appreciate you giving some of your fans the chance to be involved with The Smoking Tire! I've got a stock automatic 06' Altima with the 2.5 and 140,000 miles so if you ever in Cincinnati i'll let you have a go with it!
Matt, you drove the snott out of this car!! Sheesh, You're a brave dude. It's like every time you pause, the tire chirp was the period in your sentence. Lol
Are those seats standard in the US ? In Australia, and I'm guessing Europe have much more race type seats. And they're awesome..One of my favourite cars, that model RS4.
I appreciate your vids and shout outs. I definitely wish to drive down and see the scenery and try these places. Who knows maybe you can give me pointers on my STi GR205 build as we catch some drinks at Hutchinson's!
That's the question I ask myself frequently. I have a 2013 ford fusion now and it's great but cars are my passion and I would like something more spirited. So, do I stick with the affordable, 36 mpg, practical family sedan, or do I pony up the cash for a fun German sports sedan and get a great ownership experience?
William Levine If you have no debt, and the money for maintenance and fuel, why not? If you have debt, stick with the Fusion, because it will be much cheaper to run. It's got at least 160 hp, which isn't that bad! In some ways lower horse power is more fun because it forces you to be more efficient with your momentum, know your engine better, and be a better driver. My daily driver fwd manual hatchback has only 120 hp, is massively front weighted with under-steer and over-steer, yet I can drift it because I know its balance, grip, and torque very well. I consider its body roll part of the challenge. It won't win any races off the line, but it's still fun. I've driven it to the Pacific, Atlantic, and Arctic oceans, and the only time I've wanted more power is on steep climbs (8%+) at highway speeds in the Rockies. There's also the joy of exactly matching engine revs on the down shifts. Is your Fusion a manual?
my fusion is not a manual, but it is the 1.6 turbocharged ecoboost engine. 180 horsepower, 185 lb ft torque, but because it's turbo, peak torque is only at 2500 rpm. it's actually quite a good engine, has a good bark to it, and it's very responsive (which is a compliment to the 6 spd automatic also). and i literally can't average under 30 mpg on the highway with it... in fact, 40 is a more realistic number if you set the cruise control to 60 or 55 (something i rarely do here in new jersey haha... but in pennsylvania, where i go to school, it's almost a must as the cops are very aggressive there). i know it's not smart to buy an rs4, i will be graduating with debt, but the automotive romantic in me wants one before they get too old and aren't relevant anymore or are unreliable.
Hey I watch the Smoking Tire all the time, but can y'all talk and show how your driving style is and how you heel toe? I'm really interested in how many different driving style there are and how grip can affect shifting. Thank you and great vids.
Great review, nice driving in the canyons was loving watching you drive. I have a 2005.5 B7 S4. Beautiful vehicles. In my opinion the best all-around cars. 👍🤟🏼Go Quattro....:)
I love your review on the '07 RS4! I agree with most of what you said, they will definitely be in german engineering history books in the future... especially with the oh so great 4.2 v8 Cheers!
Peter Ohsnap That’s something owners have to improve (or rectify if they break a linkage joint) by buying the JHM Delrin shifter bushing and heim jointed cross rod.
Please correct me if I am wrong, but isn't this the same basic engine architecture as the V8 in the R8 and NOT that ridiculous 4.2L V8 as found in the S4 with the plastic timing chain covers and timing chains in the back, near the Firewall ?
So how many tickets have you received driving the canyon's at those kinda speeds? Great review's by the way, would love to see more of the random car reviews.
bradloy25 One. About 6 months ago, for doing 53 in a 45 in the Fiesta with the Regular Car Reviews guys riding with me. It was dismissed, because that's why lawyers cost money.
I find it funny reading through comments talking about how quick a car is, when the length of the race is maybe 10 to 15 seconds in length. Any carmaker can build a car to go fast for short intermittent amounts of time. How many car makers build into their road-going cars the ability to survive being driven fast for long distances, for long extended amounts of time, on a course that requires turning the steering wheel right or left . The B7 RS4 is one of those cars that while may not be fast by today's standards driving in a straight line, throw in some fast sweepers and some long-distance,, few cars inspire the type of confidence, fun, and reward the B7 RS4 does.
I love your reviews and the one takes you've been doing. Hopefully you get some real interesting car. Wished I lived there you can drive my 2015 subaru sti, but as of right now in chicago I got on winter tires.
Thank you Matt for this video and tell me please, what's the best tuned B7 RS4 you've driven ? Where should I go if I wanted to tune mine and which parts should I change and which should I leave as is..?
I'm the car owner and I agree with Matt. Keep it stock, MAYBE put an exhaust on it. The older these get, the fewer stock ones are around and the higher your resale price stays.
If you were on the east coast, I'd have you give my 2004 Saab 9-5 Aero a run with 142000 miles. Pushes around 300hp and 340ft/lbs to a LSD and some other nice little touches to keep it hugging the road even though it is FWD
I would say all RS models are limited in the United States. Quattro gmbh has only release 5 RS models to the US in 10 years. The RS4 was only available for 2007 and 2008; less than 2,000 sedans were imported with another 900 or so cabriolets. Most RS models are imported for only 2 year runs, only the RS5 has been on sale for 3 years, but 2015 is the last year, with RS7 also breaking tradition and will be offered for more than 2 years.
TheSmokingTire Yeah, but I was asking about the "racing" bucket seats. I haven't been able to try them myself, so I wonder if you had. For some reason demo or dealer cars always seems to have the sports seats but used cars on the market for some reason always have the more racing inspired bucket seats instead. Atleast around here.
***** Audi has never sold any RS wagon in the United States. Not RS2, not B5 RS4, not C5 RS6, not B7 RS4, not C6 RS6, not B8 RS4, not C7 RS6. Sad. They're all amazing cars.
it is the 'LIVE' box. connects to the detector via a cable and my phone via bluetooth. It allows for a crowd sourced map of things similar to waze, but concentrating on radar traps in real time. It's pretty boss.
I use a valentine one. The best thing about the V1 is that it's programmable. You deactivate K and X bands and then it only goes off when it's really a cop shooting KA radar or laser
Nice review Matt! I'd have to agree with just about everything you commented. If you can find a stock RS4 with low miles and good condition grab it now!
***** Lol. They are. LS motors by GM are highly regarded by many as being bullet-proof and some of the best v8's out there. You also don't have to pay upwards of 1k just for an oil change. ;)
It's a great v8, but far from the best one ever. I could list a couple right off the top of my head I would consider better, ie BMW's s62 and s65, GM's LS7, and I really like the motor from the Ferrari f355, 5 valves/cyl and a sound to die for.
i don't know if it's driving style or actual chassis dynamics and power curves, but Matts's driving is so much smoother in the higher hp cars like viper, hellcat and even the M4. Maybe that should be expected when pushing limits of slower cars, maybe I'm seeing good car vs not as good but this thing didn't look like as much fun as he said he was able to have in it. Is it the torque, the quicker steering, weight balance, something more personal, or am I just seeing things?
MrNicholg The RS4 doesn't shine too bright on the very tight sections. It's just not meant for that. Whereas the Viper is so obscenely fast and grippy, and the M4's difinitive characteristic is smoothness. But really it's more like, I drove the Viper, M4, and all the other new press cars like 1,000 miles before doing a one-take, and the RS4 I just jump in, turn the camera on, and go. No practice, no warmup, no "lets just see what this is like" before going real fast. I'm sure it's possible for SOMEONE to be perfectly smooth in a car they've never driven before, but I'm afraid I'm not that good.
TheSmokingTire yeah, i guess it's just time in the car, and the one-take format. Some do seem to agree with you more than others, which in the end is what the reviews are all about. I guess some of the perceptions of viewing are just more nuanced, but video format still rules vs written articles, and the fact you can speak through them in a stream is great.
Hey Matt, I have a 2007 Cayman S in Detroit if you are interested. :) Great reviews BTW. It's good to see what these cars are like on real roads and driving them aggressively but in a realistic manner.
manual and awd in an 8 cylinder car is just win
till some things breaks and there’s no space to work:(
I love performance audis, regardless of their under steering stereotypes.
It's pretty easy to set them up to be extremely neutral...

Hey Matt, any chance of seeing a review of that "new" Lexus you bought?
Why did they put the timing chains on the back of the engine? Do you have to pull the engine if you need to change one?

I'm the car owner and I agree with Matt. Keep it stock, MAYBE put an exhaust on it. The older these get, the fewer stock ones are around and the higher your resale price stays.
billroshia Thanks!
TheSmokingTire Thanks!
Don't the B7's have a flat torque curve across the board? Like, straight flat almost?
You forgot to tell me if its better or worse than the ford fiesta.
Haha jk solid review. I lovve these one take videos. Wonder whats next?
Shame it don't have the RS recaros, they have the support you missed. By far the best oem seat I've tried
Right on the money with the review. Perfect DD for Colorado. Fun on the track too (High Plains Raceway road course).
I hope you get to do a one take with a well sorted b5 s4 sometime soon
If you were on the east coast, I'd have you give my 2004 Saab 9-5 Aero a run with 142000 miles. Pushes around 300hp and 340ft/lbs to a LSD and some other nice little touches to keep it hugging the road even though it is FWD
Matt, does your buddy Craig still have his RS4?
I would say all RS models are limited in the United States. Quattro gmbh has only release 5 RS models to the US in 10 years. The RS4 was only available for 2007 and 2008; less than 2,000 sedans were imported with another 900 or so cabriolets. Most RS models are imported for only 2 year runs, only the RS5 has been on sale for 3 years, but 2015 is the last year, with RS7 also breaking tradition and will be offered for more than 2 years.
Matt can you sit comfortly in Audi's bucket seats or should a big guy try to avoid them if possible?
Johan Littorin I can't "sit behind myself" in the B7, but I can sit behind my shorter, female friend in her B7 A4.
Which generation of wagons were brought to the US? I think the late 90s B5 is one
The were B5, B6, and B7 in regular S4 trim. RS4's were the B5 Avants though I am not sure if they were ever sold in the US
*****
Audi has never sold any RS wagon in the United States. Not RS2, not B5 RS4, not C5 RS6, not B7 RS4, not C6 RS6, not B8 RS4, not C7 RS6. Sad. They're all amazing cars.
When will the Fox Mustang be ready?
Alan Michael When it's ready. You don't rush free.
My favourite Audi so far.
This is a beautiful car !
I looked at a used RS4 from several years ago. Unbelievable the high resale value on these. What gives??
Only 2000 of them were imported.
Less than 200 imported to Canada
What's on the bottom of the passport radar detector? Never seen that before.
it is the 'LIVE' box. connects to the detector via a cable and my phone via bluetooth. It allows for a crowd sourced map of things similar to waze, but concentrating on radar traps in real time. It's pretty boss.
Ah thank you. I never bothered with LIVE.
B5 RS4 please!
Hey Matt, what radar detector do you use, and would it be too sensitive if you live in NYC?
I use a valentine one. The best thing about the V1 is that it's programmable. You deactivate K and X bands and then it only goes off when it's really a cop shooting KA radar or laser
Thanks Matt! Thumbs up to you, for actually taking the time to respond to your viewers and answer questions. Very much appreciated!
Nice review Matt! I'd have to agree with just about everything you commented. If you can find a stock RS4 with low miles and good condition grab it now!
Still look for one to buy everyday. Brilliant car. Only problem, the one's that are for sale have been "pre-loved" a little too much.
is it really one take when there is jump cuts
Love to see you do a one take on the E46 or E92 M3 :)
Matt would you agree if said It might be the best N/A V8 ever made? :)
The LS v8's by GM are really good.
R700Demon Sure it is..
***** Lol. They are. LS motors by GM are highly regarded by many as being bullet-proof and some of the best v8's out there.
You also don't have to pay upwards of 1k just for an oil change. ;)
R700Demon Sure a GM Engien is better than Audi´s 4,2 V8..
It's a great v8, but far from the best one ever. I could list a couple right off the top of my head I would consider better, ie BMW's s62 and s65, GM's LS7, and I really like the motor from the Ferrari f355, 5 valves/cyl and a sound to die for.
How does it compare to the e90/92 M3?
i don't know if it's driving style or actual chassis dynamics and power curves, but Matts's driving is so much smoother in the higher hp cars like viper, hellcat and even the M4.
Great reviews BTW. It's good to see what these cars are like on real roads and driving them aggressively but in a realistic manner.
That road looks nice!
American tarmac must be amazing to drive on because here in Malta my B8 A4 would slide right off the road if i tried to take a corner at those speeds
