Pavel Bure, Joe Sakic, Temu Selanne were in their prime when I started taking an interest in hockey. Bure sadly had his career cut short by injuries. But he was a beast. That cup run in 94 was epic.
I was there! So long ago, I was 11 years old trying to get all pavel bure’s hockey cards in packs way back in 92! Could remember it like yesterday, time flies!
Bure had the potential to be greater than Lafleur. Score more goals and could also play defense. Never had a center or winter who was also playing at a HoF level. Had 58 and 59 goals on a Panthers team. Imagine if he had a center like Trottier, Gretzky or Oates.
I remember that the Canucks were close to getting Oates… that would’ve been magical. If they could’ve kept or re-acquired Larionov, that would’ve been great too… but oh, if they’d managed to land Gretzky while Bure was still in his prime… 🤯 Even though it was one of the worst eras for scoring, Gretzky and Bure together would’ve meant some those seasons in the late 90’s, when they both put up great numbers despite not having much to play with, would’ve been extraordinary.
In 1994, I remember that they showed a Stanley Cup playoff clip on TV and for the first time I was amazed to see what Pavel Bure could do. I still have around 700 hockey cards of this player. The season before I fell in love with Bure's style of play, the Finnish Flash Teemu Selänne literally flew in NHL and set a rookie record for the number of goals that is still valid today. And I couldn't decide which of these two players I would collect as number 1 on my hockey cards. But then came the semi-final at the Olympic tournament in Nagano when the Russian team and the Finnish team faced each other. This was the turning point. Teemu scored a hat-trick! And the rest is history...
Bure was my favorite player when I was a kid and I’m a rangers fan it sucks when he finally became a ranger the injuries caught up with him he definitely changed hockey
I was there for it all from the very first shift! It was truly unlike anyone I've ever seen before and crazy enough since. Not one player since has come close to his style of rush offense. Oh and btw.. it was the Pacific Coloseum.. Rogers Arena was much later ;)
There's a way better video of Bure compared to McDavid with lots of stuff you usually don't see on a channel called Derrick2shot. This channel here, doesn't even know how to pronounce Bures name right.
Pavel Bure was a LEGEND in VanCity. I lived in Vancouver when the Canucks went to the Stanly Cup final against the Rangers. Words cant even explain the excitement he brought to the table. He made believers of us all. ;)
I watched every second of that 1994 cup final. I was 17 at the time. THATS ONE OF THE BEST FINALS I EVER SEEN. ALONG WITH THE 2004 FINAL AND 2008 N 2009 FINALS 👍🏻
I don't want to disagree with you, but so many of Ovechkin's goals require him to stand in one place and wait for a pass so he can shoot the one-timer. He can do that in his old age. Bure can one-time it as well, but he didn't want to just stand around. To do what he could do in full flight requires so much more skill. Even if he stayed healthy, he could do it for several seasons, but not into old age like Ovechkin. To play like that Bure was always bound to suffer injuries. He was just a breath of fresh air in a stagnant NHL. Watch any rookie highlight clip (Bedard, Celebrini, Michkov) and compare that to Bure's. What an incredible talent was he.
exactly, people forget those 58 & 59 goal seasons when Pavel only played 77 & 75 games in that era. 82 games, he would have had 60 back-to-back AGAIN in his career, which is mindblowing!
This has been a great video right up to the point where you said he made his debut in Rogers Arena.. they were still playing in the Colosseum at that time and GM Place wasn't opened until 95.
It's sad that fighting has all been outlawed! Bure story is the classic tale of a players brilliance wasted because goons took shots at him with no fear of retribution! He could have been greater that Ovechkin if the league stayed out of the politics of rule changes. Many players true brilliance was dimmed by the 2 minute instigator trying to ban fights. Fighting has always been a self check in a fast game meant to calm tensions down and to protect star players from the goons! The amount of cheap shots Bure took night after night of players going low on his knees are what took their toll! Make Fighting Great Again and watch players like Bure shine!
Bure was the McDavid of the 90's. Like he would just super speed out of nowhere and you would not catch the guy. Too bad his injuries caught up with him. Even as a Canucks hater back then, I was a fan of the guy. Just amazing!
Not an easy task to cover this great athlete in under 12 minutes. I was fortunate enough to watch him many times during my younger years. He was a class act on and off the ice. What bothered me the most was how the Vancouver organization treated him later on in his tenure with the Canucks. Nothing new. It has continued on up until today with many other stars. Keep up the good work you've got another subscriber!
@@NhlHeroOfficial It was something else. The minute that puck touched his stick almost everyone got out of their seats at the Pacific Coliseum to see what he'd do next. Never saw that again. i remember waiting in line for hours outside the coliseum in 94 for a fan appreciation autograph session they held. He was pleasant and happy signing away. A big hit helping out at Canuck Place.
One of the most exciting players ever. Every time he got the puck he had a chance to score. The Russian Rocket nickname suited him. He was the most explosive player who ever played. From a standing start he exploded like a sprinter out of the blocks. Over a short distance to retrieve a loose puck nobody could catch him
Prime Bure before his knee injury is probably the guy i watched along with McDavid that was the best at making plays at full speed. Dude was magnificent. He was never truly the same after his injuries though. It took quite a bit of speed from him I still have his upper deck rookie card
I was at Bure's first nhl game in Vancouver. Which is so lucky because I have only seen 3 hockey games live in my life. Vancouvers d-men would leave the puck behind the net and Bure would repeatedly skate onto it and through the entire team to get a chance on net. He never scored that night but every time he got the puck the entire stadium rose to it's feet.
Bure would have been perfect for todays hockey, back then he took alot of abuse, todays hockey isnt nearly as rough. Bure would light it up in todays NHL,

I love hockey and watching these kinds fo videos for little nuggets of informations. Sadly, your mispronunciations are grating. Please at least watch a few highlights before recording. I'm one video away from blocking your content.
There are so many things wrong with this video. Highlights from different years than the ones being described. The pronounciation at least twice of his last name. Rogers arena? I mean, how could you get his last name wrong like that when you can simply watch and Listen to the highlights and hear how his name is pronounced? I will admit that John Davidson for New York got his last name wrong too, but not this bad. And then later on in the video, you start pronouncing his last name correctly. @JackBirdbath Ugh that still pisses me off lol... The person who edited this should be listening through the vids and making sure details like that are correct
What never gets mentioned is his edge, he played with a real nasty attitude. He'd take shots when he could and lay dirty hits. The 90s NHL was a different world to now, you had to make your own space and defenders could take massive liberties with forwards, the game wore his body down. Bure in todays league..... we'd be looking at different records I think. Also not commonly known, Gretzky said he'd have extended his career to get the chance to play with him wherever he was.

Bure was awesome, so fast and skilled at high speeds.
Bure Is like Lafleur, if you saw him in his prime it’s almost sure he is your favorite player ever.

If Bure played his prime years in this era with healthy knees, he would have scored at least 800 goals. Ovechkin of his day, probably better.
