  • Now that the house is finished (well, almost...) we have to focus on the outside. Landscaping.
    We started the basics, but then the rain season caught up with us... so "to be continued...""

    Beautiful Home. I’m watching all the videos slowly.
    I REALLY appreciate the effort you went through to explain everything.

    Every time I see your home I feel like I'm back in the US! Beautiful and uncommon in Thailand. Adding some elevation around the house is also well-planned.

    Maarten, thank you so much for your videos. I'm a medically retired oral surgeon in Vegas ( with a Filipina wife of 35 years) who was looking to build in the Philippines. Of course, "we make plans and God smiles". Nevertheless, I think I've watched every video you've made on this channel and marvel at the amount of expertise you bring to the effort. I'm so happy to see the progress you've made and am living vicariously through you and your wife's efforts. Many years ago, I met a man Dr. Harold Kremnitz in Manila who was looking to expand on a process of converting waste into building materials like AAC (or possibly AAC), but just didn't have the monies to invest in his dream. Is this from him? I suspect he is deceased now and hope this was the culmination of his efforts. I'm enjoying the channel but wish the audience had the opportunity to know more about you and the family so that we could become more engaged in your adventure. Where are you from? Your wife? Your son?, Your story of how you ended up in Thailand, etc. Just my two cents...and thank you once again.

      I will try to make an autobiographical video.
      It is a nice idea, thank you for that, and thank you for your kind words.
      Good luck to you and your wife.

    Great idea with the gutter drains hiding in the wall. Well done!

    I admire you working on your house in Thailand. I can't work in the heat for 30 mins without having to take a break. I have to pay Thai workers to make my house. I noticed that you have rooms in the roof? It must be hot up there. I'm building an off grid house as well on my channel. Good luck with your build.

    • @Living-off-grid
      @Living-off-grid  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it is hot. We have Thai workers too. Can't do it all by myself.
      The sweating is the worst. Dripping in your paint etc. Terrible.
      The rooms upstairs are only for storage. It would be too warm to use as Living-area unless you run AC all day.
      You can never have enough storage space imho.
      I'm gonna look at your channel 👍

    Thank you Maarten, this is my main interest, outside. Interested on why you will later add salt to that horrible soil, maybe too acidic. Have you had soil ph tests done ? We were in Nongbua Lamphu and the soil was awful and found the best source of good garden soil was to make our own. 1st 2 years was clearing and burning but after that everything was composted and biochar added. Anyway, looking forward to more of your adventure, are you planning producing fish for the table or crawfish? Cheers

      @Living-off-grid  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the soil here is crap. Completely dead, appart from the places where trees grow.
      We will also try to revitalize the soil. Start with plowing in the leaves and fallen branches.
      Then mayby plant coolseed or an other revitalizing crop, plow that into the soil and hope not all is lost.
      I think we will try to turn the pond into a natural swimming pond. I kind of like that more than a standard pool.
      But that is for the future. First things first, gardens.

      Thank you for the compliment.
      We have 12 rai.
      Most of it is Forrest and we'll leave it as it is, but still a lot of landscaping to do.

    How your Off-Grid solar performaning ?

    • @Living-off-grid
      @Living-off-grid  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Perfect. It's nice to know your power is free when you forget to switch off the airco (again...).

      @@Living-off-grid Energy is always forever free.
      However, converting it from 1 form to another that human can use is not free. Like your built, how much you spend on the solar panels + batteries + inverter (off-grid) verse pulling electrical cables from the pole at the main road to your house and paying the monthly bills ?
      I use to believe in those green energy stuff. After reading articles and watching videos about the destruction caused by such technology especially making Li-Po batteries and its total life cycles. I will stick to electrical grids and burning fossils fuel whenever I can and convenient to do so.

      @@rimzalia1362 If you watch the video about the solar installation, you'll learn that the only reason I went with solar was because the cost of getting PEA to connect us was almost twice as high as the entire solar installation.
      But even if this is not the case, with aircos and electric water-heaters, you would earn back the investment in 5 or 6 years. (If you don't get ripped off by a so called "solar installation expert")

    Beautiful house, but beware that a western style built house might not be ideally suitable for the Thai weather and climate.

      Actually, the house has been specifically designed to cope with the challenges of the Thai climate.
      If you watch all videos in the series, you'll see what has been done to insure a cool interior.
