Building our own house in Thailand.
The Little Boat in Pakistan
After the chaos of India it was nice to be in a country where they respect your private space and where everyone is friendly and helpful without wanting something in return.
We had a dragging brake, which was fixed for free and we had a oil-smell if we climbed very steep.. which was solved after a full day of work at the Isuzu factory in Karachi... for free.
Nothing but good experiences even if sometimes we had to wait for a security escort.

Thailand during Covid

In 2020 the covid pandemic struck the world. At that very moment, we were in Thailand and (I know it sounds a bit cold) what better moment to explore Thailand’s amazing beauty without having to share it with thousands of other tourists. So, we packed our stuff into our motorhome and set off for a month of exploring the centre and north of Thailand. Music by Bensound License code: TH5KSTEBNXIPIW...

India is the second country in our journey from Thailand to the Netherlands. Entering India from Myanmar is not easy as the Indian border guards don't see much (or any) traffic other than locals. But, after a few hours of explaining why we were there in the first place, they filled out the necessary papers (I had to teach them) and welcomed us into India. India is busy and hectic... see for you...

We took a break from building our house and spend 9 months in our motorhome, driving it from Thailand to the Netherlands. Of course I made lots of videos about this, one for each country we passed, and if you like... I will post the here on this channel. So, let me know in the comments if you think this is a good idea or a bad one. music Music by Bensound License code: LGXIWS6NPVSYXMDU

We continue to build out house in Thailand. In this episode we install a solar system. The total cost of this was 159.000 baht, which is a bit more than half the quote from the power-company to connect us. So, for half the money we get: No more bills, No more black-outs, and we contribute a bit to a better world. For those interested, all main components were bought at Lazada: PV panels: 15 hal...

Building a house in Thailand part 2, Walls and Roof
มุมมอง 17K2 ปีที่แล้ว
We are building a house in Thailand. In part 1 you could see the construction of the foundation. Now we build the walls and the roof. Sadly I had to re-upload the video as TH-cam placed (incorrectly) a copyright claim on the original one. Very sorry.
That is why we made that pipe
มุมมอง 3.2K2 ปีที่แล้ว
The monsoon has started in full force and most neighboring properties are badly flooded. Our property is mostly dry, except for a few puddles. This is because of the pipe we buried in the "dyke" behind our property. All water that enters through the two massive drainage pipes underneath the road, is transported by a small canal we made to that pipe. The pipe deposits it into the large canal beh...

Hi Maarten How can I contact you other than through TH-cam as I need some advice We go back to UK Saturday and we will be back October do you have email or WhatsApp as I want to build in similar manner try to explain DPM and DPC to local Thai architect😜 cheers Gary
Lovely images, thank you 🙏
Your house looks different than from the other houses I have been watching so far You must know how to build a house in the first place and the house looks absolutely amazing and beautiful I cannot wait to see the completed finish project.
Beautiful Home. I’m watching all the videos slowly. I REALLY appreciate the effort you went through to explain everything.
Thank you. Good to know you like it.
I’m happy to see you guys again. I’m waiting more vlogs. Have a pleasant drive. 👍
Thank you ❤
Good job 👍Inspirational and informative video. Can you please tell me the brand of active insulation and the price? Thank you
Hi. Active insulation is not a brand. It is a system. A way of creating insulation. In this case, it is a cavity wall with an air-intake at the bottom and a air-exit at the ridge of the roof (called a ridge vent). When the sun heats up the outer wall, this in turn heats up the air inside the cavity. A passive cavity would slowly heat up and transfer that heat to the inner wall. But in this active system, the warmed up air rises (warm air does that) and exits at the ridge vent. This air is at the bottom air-intake replaced by cooler outside air. This way the air in the cavity will never be warmer than the outside air. An other system we use is the replace the inside air in the house at night when the outside air is cooler. These are called active insulation because they are actively doing something, as where regular insulation just slows down the heat transfer. (The key word being "slows down"... )
@@Beyond-Anywhere Thank you so much for your explanation 🙏
Came for the rural thai house build, stayed for the dope edm music 😆 🤣.
I'm loving this series- why did you choose tile and not laminate/composite flooring? Also, where are you living? I'm in Isaan 😀
We are close to Renu Nakhon, in a tiny village called Apai Wong. I looked at laminated flooring, but it was much more expensive than tiles and I was not sure of the quality as I saw some quality issues at MegaHome (corners damaged, click-system not clicking, etc). Maybe there are better brands out there, but I though it better to stick with tiles. In my previous house (in Bolivia) we had hardwood floors, but you can not get any quality wood here 😞
where abouts in Thailand did you build? I was looking for your video on mistakes after video 8 but didn't see it. I'd love to learn more about your experience.
It is in the making. It just takes a while as I have been very busy lately. 😅
@@Beyond-Anywhere ik hoor het wel!! 🙂
Maarten Munnik, I would almost think you're Dutch. Thanks for this, I was looking for a decent video showing foundation work. Looking to build in the future, although probably a lot smaller!!
Hello sorry to bother you Maarten great Video. did you Install the solar panel system yourself or did you arrange a company to Install? I am an electrical engineer but don't have the time to install if you employed a company can you provide the details we are currently building a house near Khon Kaen for my mother in law and are looking at Solar power as an alternative to PEA supply. And could you provide an approximate cost for materials.
Great job 👏👏👏
Superb, thank you.
I am happy that you liked it
Wow! Very very nice vlog. How is your journey to Europe going? Have fun thanks.
Well, to be honest... we have returned home safely. But... no spoilers. You'll have to see for yourself what adventures we had.😊
Very nice tour Tip and Maarten, beautiful scenery! Thanks for sharing! Kienny and Geoff Kingsmill.
Hi guys, how have you been? It has been a long time!
Thanks for sharing some beautiful places. We also travelled around Chiang Rai back in 2018, but only for a few days unfortunately. Hope to get back there again some day. Keep the vlogs coming, very interesting and enjoyable.
Hi , I subscribed to help, because you sound like a nice person...for us it is not just about the video but the person who made it too, Humble and like to help the villagers, My wife is from Singapore I am from Canada. like you we have a motorhome or camper, our has toilet, shower, kitchen, hot water cold water , fridge and bed for 4, I love your camper motor home, I would like to see it inside, i assume that Isuzu is a Japanese brand but I want to know if the camper it was made in Japan? and it you can show the inside of it in another video, Giovanni and Andrea
Yes, Isuzu is Japanese, but the camper-part was build in Thailand and then rebuild by me. Video of the (re)build will come. Enjoy your camper!!
love it ! thank you planning to go everywhere there with Camper too, just waiting to go back !
Great video
Thanks!
Very nice video! You are lucky people to visit all these locations without tourists!
Wonderful video !
Thank you very much!
Thanks a lot. I will stay in touch 1:46
Thanks, I have got the answer.
Hi Maarten, Great idea, Can I ask you where from you buy the Hardware ? In Thailand or from open market online ?
Most of it came from Lazada. (PV-panels, Charger/inverter, Battery-cells, Battery BMS) The mounting materials and cabling from the local hardware-shop.
Gtreat show Maarten. Gives me an indepth knowledge while I build my house and important areas of focus while we have our buiding design and inspection during the build. Thanks a lot.
Good luck with your build.
lucky you are a electrician I would have to pay people to do all this!!
Hi Allan, I am not an electrician, but I am able to learn... and so are you. Electrical wiring is actually quite simple and straightforward. Plenty of books that will make you an expert in one week. (If I get electrocuted this year, I take back what I said😂)
Another interesting vlog as always. Thanks for sharing.
Unfortunately it was rather short. Our time there was very limited and we were more busy with enjoying it than making videos.
Remember my struggle with PEA…..similar like you but initial quote was 800000 thb and eventually got it for 300000……..note i needed transportcables and poles put in place over 400 mtr so the 300000 was fair but the initial 800000 was just ridiculous
I think 300K is still a lot for a couple of poles (2000 baht a piece) and some wire, but it is what it is here in Thailand.
Technic is very interesting. ❤👋😃🇨🇭 Design..an english house in Thailand..ridiculous..😡😡
If you insist on writing a nasty comment, then at least get your facts right. The design is called "Cape Cod" and it originated in the 1950's in the USA. It was lightly based on the "Dutch colonial" style. And, while we are at the subject: Why is it ridiculous ? Most modern Thai houses are based on older European designs... or do you prefer a wooden shack on poles?
Great job Maarten….lot of situations come back in my memories watching your videos…..building my resort was a 5 year job but unfortunately circumstances force me to sell it and start again over.currently in design of our new place and need to prevent “mistakes” made before and in addition add some cooling technic as you do. Visit at your home few weeks ago was helpful and currently designing our place using lot of your tips. With a little bit of luck i trust our new house is nearly done
Hi Robert, Good luck with the new house. ‼️
I really like your videos but the background music is horrible. Why do people do that?
Because different people have different taste.
Very beautiful. I built a similar house in Thailand. The large outside sitting area was totaly worth it. I spent most of the time there.
The sad part is most tourists go straight to Taj Mahal in Agra which is one super congested city as its also one of the oldest... most tourist traps happen there and fact that you are white does not help. Should seek help from some Indian travel vloggers... you missed amazing parts of India like Ladakh (worlds highest desert) with highest motorable mountain passes, North east India, you missed Goa (beaches), you missed South India which is the real gem. And there are thousands of temples more beautiful and full of history than Taj Mahal itself. Hope you come back for a leisurely visit.
In 2002 I visited India for 3 months (on my motorcycle) and really enjoyed it. (Including Goa) This time they refused to give me more than 1 month and we had to cross from east to west, so time was limited. By the way, the Kardung la is no where near the highest road in the world. The Uturungu road in South Bolivia goes to 5880 meter. I rode that on my motorcycle as well (several times). :-)
Hi Maarten Where did you buy AAC blocks as i am starting building project later in the year and unwilling to go along with the Thai shutter post style as only single storey house also putting DPM and DPC as soil very salty and it affects render etc Did you have any negative this is not how its done in Thailand with your builders or were they happy to try new ways as in your video ,also where are you based please , we are near Korat You are very profesional in all aspect from videos to your house build and hands on , keeping eye on your build and builders cheers Gary and Mon
Hi, We bought the AAC blocks directly from the factory (Qcon). They were able to deliver all we needed in just 4 days (after we refused to use blocks from an other supplier due to manufacturing faults). If you contact them via their website, they assign a sales-rep to you. That works great and is also the most cost-effective way. We are located in the Nakhon Phanom province (come see us). We had not too much problems with arrogant know-it-all "engineers". Just a welder who would not listen, so we told him, "Do it my way, or go away"... and he went. Problem solved. The rest of the crew was fine and eager to learn. (We were quite lucky).
th-cam.com/users/shortsgSw8GaJZWbw?si=hgFuk-gn8avm7GOW
Excellent video. Really appreciate you showing us this. Just a quick question, India Myanmar border has been closed for many years now AFAIK. When did you cross?
We crossed in 2019.
Wow wow wow, you must be a really big hearth person. You can tolerate all this staring. Big applause. What a annoying experience. How was the overnight parking places? I hear a lot stealing happen there. I wish all the best for your journey. Cheers
I have to admit, sometimes it was quite hard to remain friendly... It was pretty easy to find overnight places. I-overlander (an app) is very helpful with that, and there are no rules in India, so any place yoy like is fine... as long as you don't anger the locals. Once we parked near a village well, and at night all the village man came and expressed their worries that we might steal their water. We managed to convince them we would not 🤗
Hahaha ,
Hi Maarten. Another fan here. I liked your videos about building your own home. Who knows, maybe someday it will help me to build my own. I like your style of video-editing. Not too much talking, just informative and entertaining at the same time. I like to see everything of the two of you. You seem like a very nice and happy couple. Good luck with all your adventures in the future!
Great video Maartin! Looking forward to continuing your journey in your next video.
Just fantastic. I knew this would be one of my favorite TH-cam channels. I don't think you're aware of how good you are at this TH-cam thing. Love it 😊😊
Thank you. That is very nice to hear.
Please post all of your travel videos! I have watched all of your home building videos and appreciate your knowledge and expertise.
Will do!
Maarten - you are very brave and adventurous to undertake such a trip. I look forward to seeing your videos. It would also be nice if you could share exactly how you planned and executed such a trip from Thailand😊
Hi Mark. No, not brave... just impulsive 🤣. I will include a video about the construction (or re-construction) of our motorhome. I will also (try to) make a video about the planning, but it might turn out to be a bit dry. Lots of paperwork, nothing exciting.
I personally want to follow and the vlogs. Because there is so much things to learn. And if you don’t mind. Can you make one vlog, how you build the motorhome. Best regards all the best.
I will do that.
Great video with honest commentary, thank you Maarten ❤️
Thank you.
ja graag
Thanks for sharing your trip, enjoyed it.
Not the best roads.
😂 you haven't seen the worst parts. Best described as a 1½ lane highway with trucks going in two directions, which means one of us has to go with two wheels in the dirt, which is also a drain. And all that, while trying to avoid potholes of half a meter deep and a meter across. 😢 My wife had at least 5 heart-attacks in the first 60 km. After that it became better... which only means "less traffic".😅
Wow!@@Living-off-grid
