Your goldfinch was very well done. I tried doing and came out needing more practice. I added green around left side of bird then deliberately dropped water for splotches which became bushes. you are an excellent and talented teacher.
@@EmilyOlsonArt I gotta figure out a believable shadow color for my finch. Anything with blue just looks funky. I was wondering about doing a grey watercolor pencil under painting for the shadows on the lemon yellow. It's gotta look real.
I really liked this tutorial. I enjoy painting birds ( just finished a red headed woodpecker the other day). I love the idea of indigo and burnt umber for black. I usually use the old standby of ultramarine and burnt sienna, but now I am going to try this combo. 😊 Thanks.
It's even much cooler than the other birds you've painted before😍thanks for sharing. Beautiful Emily I'm impatiently waiting for your horse and her kid. Please learn us😍❤thanks
Thank you so much! I have to say you are the finest realistic watercolor artist I have ever seen! Your body of work is second to none. I’m in Colorado too and also started drawing horses when I was little thanks to being gifted a Walter Foster how to book. On top of your mad painting skills you are a wonderful teacher too. I have watercolor supplies on the way and hope I can do this unique medium justice someday. Pam
Love these so much. My dad was big into photography. Most of the birds he snapped were game birds but there are a few song birds. I've been wanting to paint some of his photos to honor his memory and give to my siblings as gifts. I think these tutorials will really help me understand the layering process for them. Do you have links for the reference photos?
Kim that's wonderful that your dad took so many great bird photos! I'd love to have my own personal bird photographer. :) I've attached a dropbox link in the description of this video so you can access my reference photos. Happy painting!

Really beautiful Love Goldfinches! !
Thank you, Cheri!
Beautiful, one of my favorite birds to paint. The shadow information was really helpful as I have the most trouble with shadows on yellow birds.
I'm so glad it was helpful!

Thanks, Fahimeh! Lots of new videos in the works! :)
What kind of mechanical pencil are you using for your sketch?
I think it's just a store-bought Pentel twist eraser pencil. :)
