- CLAMS! CLAMS! CLAMS! Gotta love a beautiful clam showing off in the tank. I hope this video helps you to take home a clam today and it flourish in your tank! For anyone wondering, no, clams are technically not a coral, they are mollusks, which are in a family containing snails and oysters. Almost 25 percent of ocean life are in the mollusk family.
Also, I know Brock was generalizing the care info for all clams, but some varieties like the Maxima actually do prefer living in the rocks high up near the lights. Some are found in reefs almost breaching the surface with PAR in the 2000 micromoles! Normal aquarium PAR is about 100 micromoles on the sandbed and 400 micromoles at the surface. But as with anything in this hobby, slow acclimation is best, so definitely don't put them up there right away.
My credentials to educate: being an autistic reef nerd for over a decade and have kept squamosa and maxima clams for almost that long, largest grown to 8+ inches long. Happy reefing!
As far is lighting, no such thing as too powerful, just needs acclimation. Recommend James Featheree's book. Still a debate between feeding Phyto or not since it depends on the size. 3"+ will have enough zooxanthellae to feed itself but small ones may need phtyo and glucose.

hey,i really like your videos and they helped me a lot to learn about the basic needs of the fishes that i want to add in my tank.So i have a 55g tank-fish only and i have only 2 T5 lights on(1 blue and 1 white)...will i be able to keep them alive or i need stronger lights on?also do the temperature need to be at 78 or they do fine in a variety of temps?
I really hope you answer my question because i really want to know if i am capable of adding something freesh in my tank,keep up the good work mate!!!
T5's will grow clams really well. I'd recommend keeping a consistent temp in the tank. 78 is what the tank runs currently with the clams you are seeing.
I run two current USA pros on 90% blue 15% white 20% reds and blues. The lights are 12” above the sand bed. Thanks for the feedback and the video

Could a clam be keep in a higher salinity about 1.026-1.028? I keep alot of euphyllias which like a higher salinity. Also with lighting, would a squamosa clam be good on the sand bed with a nicrew 100w? Which another thing to keep in mind blue jaw triggerfish can be housed with clams and wont harm them

Hello, subbed and liked this Thanks. I have a small Blue Maxima in my 60 gallon Mixed Reef display tank that is doing well but I have Bristol worms and a large FoxFace in there I'm concerned about. I want to start a species specific bare bottom nano tank only five gallon so 100% weekly changes are feasible. Keeping only clams and sea horses. Would this be possible and how long would a small tank like this need to cycle. No fish, just clams and ponies Thanks
mikel stevenson thanks for watching! 😁It can definitely be risky. Sea horses require pristine water quality so any spike could really hurt them. A tank that small would only take about 2 weeks max to cycle. If you hit on all of your ponies needs, excellent food source (PODS) places for them to grabble and hang on (Sea Fans or Micro Algae) and water stays great it is definitely worth a try.
it's kinda late but i have 2 ai prime (using ab+ settings) on a 40 Breeder. I was curious if the light penetrate would be enough for a maxima in the bottom of a 40B tank. Thank you
Yes it would! Once of the clams in the video is under a prime.

I have a NICREW ClassicLED light, 120 white + 24 blue. Lumens 1350 and 25 watt would this be bright enough for a clam?
I don't think it will be enough light for the clam. I'd recommend looking for a more powerful LED to help the clam. Something like Current USA LEDs if you're wanting to stay more budget friendly or the AI Primes if you are wanting to go all out.

Does it matter if they get scared and close up often? I feel like theyre sensitive to my subtle shadows, does this stress them out?
It’s just a natural instinct for them to close up. They’ll do the same in the wild when fish swim by. As the mature in the tank, they’ll get more comfortable with you being in front.

Trent The Coinfinder That should work! The t5 bulbs are relatively new huh? After about 2 years they tend to not work as well for the corals.

Matyas Castro You’re best chance is to feed him really well so that he won’t go after it as a snack. Also having the clam already in there before the trigger helps. If the trigger is in their first tho, maybe put a net over the clam to see how he reacts to it being in the tank. I’ve seen Niger Triggers and Blue throats in tanks with clams so you definitely have a chance!

only thing i see is cleaner wrasse bite him now and then but ive moved him on to the rocks cause he was on the bottom and hes opening atleast halfway now and i mostly got tangs and one fire goby and 6 chromis and then cleaner wrasse but tank is big

Is it okay to use carbon if you have a clam? I purchased a hippo clam and he was about 8 inches long but he started to retract after just a week and was almost dead after 24 hours. The only thing I did was add carbon. I usually run Carbon for a couple days when needed and I’d like to know if that could of killed the clam before I try again.
We run carbon in a majority of our reef tanks and have not seen an issue with our clams. Did you wash the carbon out before placing it into the filtration system?
@@BrockLeonard I just dipped it in a little salt water from the aquarium a few times during a water change. Not a heavy rinse.
What type of dip or freshwater bath can you do to get rid of parasites?
mogtrader8 One of my favorites is the MediCoral from brightwell aquatics. Any kind of coral dip like that will do great. Fresh water can be too tough on them.

mogtrader8 To an extent yes. If it doesn’t list a time limit specifically for a clam labeled on the bottle, then you cut it in half for a clam. But a safer route for clams is scrubbing their shell gently with a toothbrush. Or getting a parasite eating fish like a six line wrasse.

Beth Parsons Since clams are filter feeders they need some very reef nutritious water. I’d wait till the tank got more established so you would not have to worry about the clam being malnourished. Hope this helps :)

Clams are a complete waste of time. They don’t tell you very well when they are sick and can drop dead at any time. Very pretty though.
And bristle worms don’t eat clams; they eat dead clams. Pyramid snails, however, eat clams. Also, maxima is a rock boring clam, as opposed to squamosa, which likes sitting on sand.
I would add that maxima especially are light hungry, as light hungry as sps. That cannot be underestimated or your clam will starve to death.
