I've never seen a video of anyone comparing their art from one media to another like that. LOVED the paintings on both papers but it's so refreshing to hear someone giving their honest unbiased opinions and it not be motivated by who is sponsoring them or what would make them seem like they have an unlimited amount of money to spend purchasing supplies and the highest priced supplies win. Not everyone can afford the best of the best. And from the looks of your comparisons it really is more to do with skill than anything. Great video.

I really liked the Grumbacher paper. I have Arches for special and used Canson XL for practice. Grumbacher is so much better than Canson imho.
I so much agree with you ! Thanks for the review 👍

Your paintings are impressive! I'm watching this because I just picked up a tablet of 140# Grumbacher watercolor paper at WM today - seemed substantial, like decent quality.

Thank you. I still like it. When I first bought some, I did a few small simple paintings to get a feel for how best to get the results I wanted. I hope it works out for you too.

Just came across this. As I switched..actually, merged, Chinese traditional painting and calligraphy, with Western style & materials; I quickly found I couldn’t afford to always use my good cotton paper, for practice and scrap. I ordered this with my groceries last year. I had purchased a few strathmore, but got easily frustrated with it, especially wet on wet. I have now found an affordable cotton paper, but I had 2 9x12 notebooks-like yours.
I have turned them into swatch and mixing recipe books. I’ve also somehow gotten myself addicted to pigments…and mulling my own single (PB33 ❤) and mixes me, my best friend or daughter, ask me to try. Our favs are my “hummingbird wing gray” with PR233 and PB35- I do my first swatches on the Grumbacher..this particular one, I actually framed 😂🤷🏼‍♀️. The texture and effect of these 2 granulating pigments is a very vibrant 3-D, almost silvery in the cool gray spots. The most frequent comment about that swatch? “What kind of LEATHER is that? It almost looks metallic!” I’ve made pans for all 3 of us and some to give away.
I’ve made a few more great mixes, some based on Rockwells of Canada “self-evolving” paints.
In fact I got my tube of the PV19 I needed to try and recreate their new Charms 3, Blue Iris.
A stunning Magenta halo around dark vibrant purple (PV23) with some spots of precipitated Blue-Green shade (PB36). Considering what their swatches look like, I think it’s going to be yet another highly granulating, multicolor paint on Grumbachers. I don’t know why-I assume it’s the texture…but these “special effect” paints look better on Grumbacher than most of my cotton papers!
One more technique that looks incredible on this paper-Kuretake Sumi-e Gold or Silver calligraphy ink-just a tiny bit with some more viscous watercolor (Indanthrone blue, Perylene green and maroon work great!) absolute magic! My younger daughter made a request…a painting of our old farm when they were really young-right on the Fl-Ga border, up on a hill that overlooked 2 counties in Florida and one in Ga. ! We had about 5 rare and endangers long leaf pines with HUGE pinecones, (My biggest was 20in, end to end) and looking at several large live oaks behind our small barn..WITH our 2 horses and barn cats, of course..maybe Rock, almost as big as our pony, he was 1/2 St Barnard , 1/2 Great Dane..the kids’ protector. She wants me to do it with the gold ink for flowers/dew in the distance. I’m considering doing it on this paper specifically for the size and effects.
Anyways, I’ll send your video to my friend and daughter. Liz SWORE I used DS watercolor ground on the Grumbacher. I didn’t, but…might try it just to see how it looks! Red clay dressage ring in front of of the barn 🤔😁
I hope my belly calms down so I can go put my lab coat my friend got me, on and start playing

I really like this paper too. I have used it for many different media other than watercolor, eg. neocolor ii, acrylic paint. I is my go to paper. When I painted on this paper with acrylic it feels like painted leather when dry. I hope grumbacher doesn't change it. I have several extra pads just in case. Thank you for the comment. I enjoying knowing what other artists are working on. The painting you are planning sounds wonderful and complicated.

Thank you. People also don't realize, you can wet both sides of pulp paper, let it sit for a few minutes, then paint on it. It will behave quite nicely. Kinda like how you prepare wood chips for a smoker (grill).

Thanks for the review. I’ve tried a lot of different types of paper and still haven’t found any “magic paper” myself. LOL I’ve been cutting some of it down into 4-inch squares and doing tiny studies to try different techniques. Something small and less overwhelming. Thanks for the videos. BTW, the paper may not be “magic”, but your fairies are. :)

This paper is great for small studies and practice. I would be too nervous to use my cotton watercolor paper without practicing first.
I think fairies are magic too!
