Thank you, really well put together. It brought back a lot of great memories. I remember going through the old chinese miners huts when they rediscovered them on the Cromwell side of the Kawarau just back from the old bridge. Amazing to see how life was back then.
How could they rip down the historic centre and replace it with that 1980s atrocity that exits there now? Architectural vandalism, the perpetrators need medieval punishment. Fantastic video, thanks for finding and sharing. It would be lost to history if you hadn’t put it in TH-cam.
And ,after having watched the videos of the old main street, I'm amazed at how many shops ,banks ,takeaways, pubs , service stations , tractor franchises etc ,it was obviously thriving, I was there on holiday as a kid several times in the seventies, but the videos were a reminder. I realize that all those businesses did extra well because of the dam project, but it seems that they did before as well. I went to live in Cromwell in 1995 , and everyone complained about the new mall ,and there was only a few shops operating, most of them were empty, the town was far from thriving. I'd say Cromwell got a raw deal .And losing that special, picturesque old town ,was losing a lot.
Because it’s European history. Nothing is taught about how New Zealand was hewed out of impossible country with no previous development from the “indigenous population” the graft and ingenuity to over come and “make” a country at the end of world with no interest shown by the leaders is disgraceful!! Obviously we are not wanted and can never celebrate achievements or significant loss, in our history unless the other side gets something out of it..
Very well done. Glad it was put on TH-cam.

Wow, this is fantastic.
Great video, I’m shocked at the lack of information about central Otago’s history
