Jazz is an overrated "artform" all together anyway. How can playing wrong notes at wrong places be considered art? Thank God for people like Hans Groiner and Kenny G, the flamekeepers of today's true great jazz.
There is no limit to the audacity of this rendition. It is true art from the beginning to the end. Only a real artist (such as Hans Groiner) could do this.
Hans, you have opened my ears to a whole new world of harmonic beauty. I always thought that Monk was one of the two or three greatest musicians of the 20th century, up there with Stravinsky and Zappa. I now realise the error of my ways. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I am so happy that this man has come forward with the strength to finally address the shortcomings in Monk's music. So relaxing... I can now throw out my Monk records knowing that his music will be preserved properly by this lovely man. bravo.
Nice! Took me a while to catch on... but the hair tipped me off. Very nice. Definitly more subtle than anything else I've seen on youtube, I applaud that.
Ha hahahah haha First I thought you are a comedian but resourcing your other video’s I discovered that you have really to do with music. With your power of magic you are able that I jump with your ‘interpretation’ from the performance in a smoky Jazz place in the entrance hall of the Trump Tower with the pink grand piano. My admiration!!! The kitsch with the flowering rose gives a perfect completion. Ha hahahah haha
Larry literally can do no wrong musically, even as a joke bemsha (and needn’t) is great. He just exudes the joy of music, and has like a sixth sense for what should happen at any given moment in the music it’s pretty incredible and is what sets him apart from most everybody else musically.
Can't believe this only has over 100,000 views! It should have way more. One of the best on youtube after all. Let's push this to at least a million views.
Groiner is one of the great musicians of all time. He is putting meat back on the bones of the late Thelonius Monk, resurrecting him and breathing new life into his music. Not since Kenny G performed "What a Wonderful World" has there been such an accomplishment. Bravo, Hans Groiner, Bra-vo!
Monk was my uncle. One of the last things he ever told me, and this I think is just a strange coincidence, was that he tried to play like your grandfather Sans Groiner. Who wasn't very coordinated in fact he was actually born with two left hands. I glad to see you didn't inherit his affliction.
This is just what we were waiting for!! now, can you do some arrangements of Ornette Coleman's music?? Although it will be more difficult to discern where are the melodies, I think there's some potential in there too!!
I would like to express outrage at the outrage of this thread. To those of you who do not appreciate the brilliance of Hans Groiner, shame on you. This is no joke -- this is the truth about the music. Monk could learn much if he were alive to listen to Hans.
Brilliant! If Carlos Schvartman has not got his tongue as firmly in his cheek as Larry Goldings has then I feel rather sorry for him because he has obviously had his sense of humour surgically removed.
a brilliant parody, and to anyone who doesn't "get" the joke, don't worry, it wasn't meant for you, and I have to admire a musician who creates humour knowing that it isn't going to have mass appeal. Truly inspired, thank you.
OMG I've been lovin the legendary keyboardist Larry Goldings for ages but i had no idea about this other master Groiner! Acually, if you don't know the Monk's ones, this tunes sound pretty g... I'm sorry...I can't keep writi
the fact that there are people in here that think this is for real is almost as hilarious as the video itself
no, it is more hilarious!!!! hahahhaa, this is fkin brilliant
Andy , what do you mean ?
@@ericwilhelm2941 hahahaha
It makes it funny but kind of cruel too. Thats why I always find this joke always a little bit too much. But then again, it´s pure brillance
I mean, this is before trolling was popular
To make Monks wrong and strange music sound right requiers an absolute genius like Hans. Well done Mister Groiner, much respect.
Jazz is an overrated "artform" all together anyway. How can playing wrong notes at wrong places be considered art? Thank God for people like Hans Groiner and Kenny G, the flamekeepers of today's true great jazz.
For his music to be wrong he sure is a legend.

HA! This is great! Hi Eric!!
Nope.
Hillarious!!! Just what jazz needs, a few laughs!!!

Holy shit 13 years ago
Superb arrangements. Thank you for correcting the errors in this music, and playing it the way it should initially have been! You are brilliant!
fantastic - all the chromatic approach notes are circled in red and crossed out on the part:-)
Hahahaha! I loved 'Bemsha Swing' at the end, hilarious.
For years the best musical thing on TH-cam,. And this great man is world's best and most sensitive keyboard player too ...
Now I can FINALLY listen to Monk's music. Thank you Mr. Groiner.
You've always been such a big inspiration to me, Hans.
The comments here are even funnier than the video itself... But amazing video again Herr Groiner, we would all love to see more!
Absolutley Hysterical. Love it.
He posted this on the anniversary day (February 17th) of Monk's death. What a great tribute to this brilliant artist. Thank you!!!
Haven't seen this good comedy in a long time. Congratulations, sir.
I am so happy that this man has come forward with the strength to finally address the shortcomings in Monk's music. So relaxing... I can now throw out my Monk records knowing that his music will be preserved properly by this lovely man. bravo.
Thank you for making this video!

Hahaha! The Bemsha Swing "reharm" at the end is awesome!
I havn't seen this in years and I still laugh out loud!

i´m a drummer from tschechien, but i like to listen to such a pianist, who makes old music more listenable, accessible as you say, brilliant work
Love the Bemsha Swing arrangement at the end!
Me too. I would be great to hear what Hans would do with 'Monk's Mood'. I love everything Larry Golding does.

In addition to being a fine musician, that Larry Goldings is a damn good actor.

When will we get episode 2??
Larry! .. Holy shit, this is amazing!!
Now I love Jazz. Thx Hans.
This is one of the greatest videos I have ever seen. LOL. he is amazing
LOL So glad he discovered what he thinks Monk was trying to do! LOL Larry is a GEM
16 years ago....this might be a gem people. This might be the foundation of the internet humour, the beginning of our ruins, the dawn of our despair.

Are there any books or any online resources for Groiner's Monk Reharms?
Sure, they're right here: I, IV, V.
Tabs please!
LOL
My music teacher showed us to this last week, absolutely hilarious: thought this guy was for real.
Your music speaks to me.

Best version of bemsha swing ever

As I hear the "Well You Needn't" excerpt, well I needn't hear more. (Your deadpan delivery helped deliver the comedy.)
I saw Hans perform live a year or so ago at Vitello's in Los angeles - he was wonderful!

greatness...and now we daaance
Not strictly speaking as the B occurs over a G7 chord (Gmixolydian) meaning he effectively beginning on chord IV of C major.
Genius Larry. :)
