Will This Worn-Out 1979 Chevy RUN AND DRIVE 1200 Miles Home?

- We picked up this 79 C30 in Spearfish South Dakota with a hurt engine and instead of doing the sensible thing like put it on a trailer we decided to drive it 1200 miles back home to East Texas.
My uncle had a 79 Chevy crew cab dually in this color. His had a 454 in it. He had it new and got rid of it at almost 20 years old and a half a million miles. We always called it the big green monster.
We're going back with a 454 and a 4L80E very soon.
Same truck maybe? You never know
Could be!!
@@Crossthe_line Didn't you say it had a big block in it before?
Correct, VIN shows a 454 originally
That was some American workmanship, Chevy at it's best. Personally I really like the ole girl 😉. Very interesting 🤔 content.
That's good use of materials, making due with what you got, duallys are getting scarce, nice find.
This one is a survivor for sure!
Great video, gotta love the old dually square bodies!
Thanks!! Hard to beat an old square body.
Always good to have that extra radiator laying around
Its amazing when you listen to a vehicle how long you can make it last
I've been there before Id be willing to bet you have a pin hole in a piston. It has to be small otherwise it would have been like my dodge and pump the oil out the tailpipe super fast. But if it made it 1200+ miles shes definitely a keeper worthy of a rebuild of the highest level
I agree, we're going to yank the head and see what's going on with it but unless it's 60 over we'll definitely give it some love.
@@Crossthe_line ❤️
You might could try putting a non-filer on that spark plug if she might start hitting on 8
Good job fixing on the old truck so far...smart choice replacing all the tires and painting the wheels and putting that fancy aluminum radiator in the truck..
Very amazed with the condition of the engine. Made me rethink instead of buying modern truck.
We love our old school stuff around here, old doesn't mean junk.
@@Crossthe_line yes sir for sure. Plus I think the design looks way better than today and a lot of fun. Thanks for sharing.
Very little style or flavor in today's vehicles in my opinion. Thanks for the support!
Bought a 79 Chevy c30 dually crew this summer it’s been swapped already with a 12v Cummins she runs excellent mated to a TH400 with gear vendors overdrive on the tail shaft paid $1,000 in same shape basically
In pipestone Mn
You stole that thing at $1000!!! After driving this one home I wouldn't mind building 1 for myself with a 12V.
Never wanted a old 1 ton more in my life.
You checked the wrong side rocker arm. It was the drivers side exhaust chuffing so it would be the right side of the engine, not the left
I was told that #8 was the dead cylinder so I went off what I was told.....however he was thinking that #8 was on the driver's side. Young kid still learning.
I had 2 OBS GMC’s in the 70’s. Both std cabs, 4x4’s, 3/4 ton, 350 engines, one full time 4x4 with auto trans and the other with manual 4 speed. Both of them would get 10 mph. Didn’t make any difference if they were idling or running down the road. Also had a 3/4 ton, 2wd, 1983 Square Body that improved a little, getting 11-12 mpg.
Yeah these older engines weren't known for their fuel mileage but would run forever!
Hey......I owed that truck in 2017 lol that's crazy. It was in Amazing shape when I had it. I'm glade you're gonna fix it
What engine did it have then?
It had that old oil burning 350 unfortunately.
The big block was long gone. I bought it here in North Dakota. Looks like the guy I sold it to abused her
She's getting a new lease on life now. I put another 350 in it the week after we got home. We have a 454/4L80E, all new door/window seals, lowering kit, etc for it.
@@Crossthe_line that's awesome. Can't wait to see more of her on your channel
That was awesome that truck did well good old trucks love them trucks
It's a solid truck!
You look like a grown up Bart Simpson.. beautiful video and truck..wait for a 454👍🏻💪🏻
🤣🤣🤣 thanks man!!
@@Crossthe_line thank you and merry christmas from Europe
Merry Christmas to you and your family!!
@@Crossthe_line Thank you very much!
Square body crew cabs must be in! I just bought one this summer too 😂
I bought one 2 years ago in Washington and finally brought home to ny a couple months ago
Sucks when you cant swap a engine on the road... when i bought my dually i actually was looking at another one with no engine or trans... and i wanted to you tube an engine insatall out on the road meeting people and friends along the way... then i called my tow guy i have used in the past and he said he had same truck running and driving for $500 more so i bought it and after 2 years of sitting, i put in my semi trailer and took home
Engine swap would have definitely made for better content!
That back window was factory modification for the camper.
That truck deserves a diesel engine.
We have 2 more that are 4x4 that will get diesels
Around NC that square body definitely doesn't have any rust on it. That little bit ain't even considered surface rust 😅😂
For sure!! 🤣
It's a shame you can't find an overdrive unit & install it on the dually.
My 82 3/4 ton made the same clutch pedal noise.
Please dont lower it. Regards from Ody SLim
I think the good old boy can put a cap on all respecthat's not necessary I'm sure you can get it figured out man... It's Harpin on the man it's just a radiator cap a good old boy can get it done is a big strong man
This thing with a 12 valve cummins and a 5 speed manuel woold be very nice
Absolutely!!
I believe that's the same radiator I bought for my k5 withe 454
You should power stroke, swap it it would be cool and unique
That would definitely be different
So I think the reason The gauge was showing hotter when the lights were on was a loose ground somewhere. My bonanza does the same thing.
I think you're right
Great video. Wish that truck was in my yard.
Thanks man! It's definitely a survivor!
7mpg is absolutely ridicilous haha :D
🤣
40:31 is that a 4x4 crown vic in the background?.......lol, git 'er done!
Yes it is!! Cummins, 40s, custom frame
You should turn that 350 into a 383 stroker.
We still need to open it up and find out what happened to it but I agree on that.
Diesel engine 1979 Chevy Silverado dually
Get the 3 tonne of tyres an wheels off the back ,you might get better mpg!
Needed the traction.....🤣
Noticed the extra antenna....
Breaker 19!!
HSHAHAAH Great video!!!!
9:30, right where a Ford belongs, on a trailer behind a Chevy.
A Duramax swap would be cool, keep it GM.
🤣🤣 I was waiting on someone to comment about that!
Is the red 2nd gen for sale at 19:37?
No sir, that truck belonged to a customer and was getting a new engine.
@@Crossthe_line thanks for the reply, I’ve been looking for a good 2nd gen dually, v10 or Cummins.
No problem sir
Duramax engine swap over
How'd it do on fuel?
7ish mpg
Yes Chevy Silverado dually is better than ford
Everyone has their opinion
This is another vice grip garage won't a be I hat why can't this people do their own thing it's so sad
Not even close to Derek's level and not the only thing I do.
want-a-be** Hate** if you're gonna be a hater spell right first.
You talk to much
