Best mod I did on my utility trailer/RTT was a set of steps 3ft wide with wood treads 4inches wide made from steel I bolt to the trailer when I get on site. Swapped tent around go in other side the original ladder is just to hold up the tent.few nights of old man bladder will turn you away from that ragged aluminum ladder. It's like walking up stairs into the tent.

The front box is where I have all my electrical. I have a 36”x18”x18” box. 2 100 amp hour batteries, fuse panel and battery cutoff switch. It also has 110v inlet for plugs inside trailer and for charging batteries if I’m somewhere with power or off of generator. Also has solar plug for briefcase solar panel to charge batteries and 7 pin connector to charge while driving. 12v runs my inside and outside led lights, ceiling vent fan and cigarette and usb plugs for my 12v fridge/freezer combo. I’m running a 5x8 enclosed cargo trailer.
I’ll take that as a compliment. Haha. Thanks. Another guy in our group just built one as well, with added features. Building your own is a lot of fun and can save a truck load of $$. Just got back from weekend test run.
Hey I'm willing to explore this idea as well. Maybe some toughts for comments or next video about how the trailer behaves on trails? What cosntraints did you found to have a trailer on every trail? Some content of the offroads challenges of having a trailer? good content mate! keep it coming!
Man I love this! I was looking at a full DIY trailer build, but looks like they end up being pretty pricey, even welding it myself. I wondered if I could start with a utility trailer base and build up from there. You did exactly what I was hoping - thanks for doing the proof-of-concept for me! ha! Running an 03 TJ and just don't have enough room for stuff as a family of four, but really like the ability to get off road with the Jeep (and not worry about scratching up the truck). I have a 5x8 trailer that I don't use a lot that I'm thinking of using for the base. Any comments on trailer size restrictions that you've found? Again, that's for sharing your build and how 'practical' everything is in the build - built to use, not just for show!
Hey. Thanks for the comment. I wanted the 4x6 for several reasons but everyone’s gonna have different needs and wants. I haven’t ran into any issues with this size. And we’re a fan of 4 also and the extra space is awesome. Thanks again and good luck with your project.

Do you know the total weight gear and all? Looking to get an XJ in the future and trying to see if doing something like this would be possible. Also does it have a big affect on your gas mileage? Keep up the videos! It's cool to see someone from the state I live in doing a build like this and using it around here.
Don’t have the actual weight with tent and gear but I’d guess 1500 to 1700 lbs. and yes it does affect mileage. I lose 3-4 mpgs. Thanks for compliments.
@Ovrlnd East has the wood held up? If you were to do it again would you use wood or metal for the skins of your box? The trailer looks awesome, a lot of craftsmanship went in to your build!
Yes. Wood has held up great. But if I did it again I’d use a sign material I just found out about. It’s a rubber membrane sandwiches between 2 sheets of aluminum. About 1/8 think. Lite and durable.

I used a 5 pin relay. From the vehicle, You’ll need a 7 pin connector with 12v power and reverse lead. I really can’t explain the wiring but there’s plenty of info on YT. That’s how I figured it out. Good luck.
No complaints with the 4x6. Plus it worked best with the 4x8 material that was available. 5 wide would have added seams. (Leaks) But everyone has different needs.

I used the Timbren wheel spindles to have ground clearance in the center of my trailer.

You can build be a trailer any day, great job. I suggest a DIY water tank out of 3 or 4 inch PVC, lots of videos on here.

Sold it last year but it was working great when I got rid of it.
