  • In this video, I highlight some of the techniques I used for painting the pilot figure for my 1/32 Hasegawa J2M3 Raiden build. Still a long way to go before I would consider myself a proficient figure painter, that's for sure.

    If this is an example of someone who doesn't paint pilots, you're setting the bar extremely high. I would say this is masterclass standard .

    "Cut you some slack?" YHGTBSM? You have painted up this pilot to look as good as any 1/32nd resin figure would look in a similar pose. I could not put out an effort like this in two lifetimes. Please stop being so self-effacing and give yourself the credit you are due. This is EXCELLENT WORK and you made it look easy!

    • @FlyingSModels

      Appreciate that, Lawrence. I'm happy enough but there are some guys out that that really can paint the pants off of some figures (not literally, of course...haha). Thank you for the positive feedback. I'm pretty happy for a newbie to figures but I would like to improve. Thanks for taking the time to provide some feedback and encouraging words. Cheers!

      @@FlyingSModels Rest assured that may of the "guys out there who can paint the pants off figures" could not build a 1/32nd Raiden half as well as you can. There are master figure painters. There are master scale modelers. Seldom the twain meets. I would imagine if you did nothing but figures for the next year or so you would be in the upper atmosphere of that particular art form based on what you did with your Raiden pilot. As you know, it usually comes down to what we like to do most. We tend to stick to "the comfort zone." I, for one, will be interested to see your next pilot effort should you choose to do so.

    • @FlyingSModels
      @FlyingSModels  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lawrencereid9375 Thanks, Lawrence. I guess you got a point. I'd like to be much better but I'm probably not going to switch over to try to paint figures all the time. I like aircraft models and just thought it would be cool to humanize the Raiden a little bit by including a pilot. Plus, I had some comments about making a video on how to paint a pilot so figured...why not. I do like to try to get out of my comfort zone and try new things so this little guy was good for that. Really appreciate the thoughtful comments. All the best, Chad

    Excellent job! Models without pilot or driver figures are incomplete without them, IMHO. I wish all model companies included pilot/driver/etc. figures. If a builder doesn't want to include them- just leave 'em out!

  • @jeffnelson1672

    You have done an absolutely first rate figure there, Chad! I am just now getting back into modeling after about 45 years, and you have given me some great information and technique! I have not painted a figure yet, since returning, and I'm sure my older eyes and less-steady hands will present a challenge! Although I did pretty good work as a kid!
    There is one comment I'd like to make, about what I see quite a bit among modern hobbyists painting model figures on YT. Maybe it's just me, but it seems to me that some modelers treat the figures as if they were 2-dimensional, creating and perhaps overemphasizing shadows and highlights that will naturally appear on the 3-D figures, under natural or dramatic lighting. I appreciate and understand the need for pin washes and some enhancements to bring out the detail on these tiny people, along with weathering and some dusting up (and flat paints), but sometimes the extra-high contrast from some artists, such as that very talented Night Shift fellow, make them look more like Meissen collectables than men of war. Sometimes less is more? Just my take. Great video, and great modeling!

    • @FlyingSModels
      @FlyingSModels  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for the thoughtful feedback, Jeff. I'm glad the video was helpful and good to hear that you are back to the hobby after a little bit of a break. I completely understand your comments/thoughts on techniques that look to over emphasize shadows and highlights. It's a balance, in my opinion, and largely comes down to personal preferences, just like any other art form. From my perspective, and only my perspective, "overdoing" it a little on the smaller scale subjects actually helps the overall look when the entire model/subject is viewed as a whole. I agree that thing look overdone when viewed as a single piece or subassembly but highlighting things help things when viewed in their entirety (at least to my eye). But as I said (and what I like) about this hobby is that there is room for everyone to do what they like. I'm of the camp that says there is no right way but I know there are other camps that would argue that point. Again, appreciate the inputs. - Chad

    My first time dropping by and like most of these channels I'm instantly interested, captivated, intimidated and envious.
    But really, the false humility has gotta go. What you did to that figure I could never hope to replicate in my lifetime. I've got about 50 years into this hobby and am acutely aware of how pathetic my efforts look, particularly when I see craftsmanship of this calibre.
    It solidifies my belief that like many other endeavors we pursue there are those of us who will devote a lifetime to the pursuit of excellence and will find ourselves scratching and crawling through the entire journey. Oh, some of become quite good after ample time of paying ones dues assign large quantities of blood, swear and tears through it all. Then, there is the rest. The chosen few. The child prodigy, natural...the holy and the anointed. It's the child of 5 years who appears onstage seated behind a Baby Grand and who effortlessly pounds out some Chopin, Mortzart and Brahms and makes it appear so effortless. But we know better. It's a simple matter of being born with it (as you are)...and the rest of us.
    We'll be waiting in the wings, waiting for the next umveiling and all the while we'll know our place.
    Nice work!😆👍
    Got another subscriber here. Glad to be here!

      Thanks for the sub, Tony, and the kind words. We are always our own worse critics and while you might think it's false humility, I see tons of room for improvement in my work. I guess that's just how we evaluate ourselves. Probably the human condition to evaluate oneself against others that are superior. When I see what some folks can do with figure models (and other models) I marvel at their skills. It does push me to try new things and to get better. Maybe that's what it's all about. No Chopin here but I'll keep doing my best and sharing my models in the hopes that they can inspire, inform, or at a minimum, just entertain. Well...maybe they aren't that funny :) Thanks again and all the best to you! Happy Modeling - Chad

Specifically, how you paint a base coat and then add a "couple drops of white/ochre" etc... with paint already in the airbrush. Nice job! What I do on the eyes, is; paint the whites an off white color. Then, fill them in almost completely with the iris color. If anything make them more to the vertical rather than round. That way you don't run the risk of the figure looking "bug-eyed". I wish I could locate the 1/32 Raiden. I've always liked Hasegawa kits. Very nice result you acheived.

    When well done a figure, be either a pilot, tanker or driver, not only add life to a model, but helps also to understand models' real dimensions.
    F.e. it's a pity that latest Airfix models not only didn't have any figures, but in the 1/72 tanks the hatches are molded close.
    P.s, eccellent work, you're too modest, it seems really a resin figure!

    Looks great, only advice for painting eyes would be never go with white at any scale smaller than 1/16 the whites of the eye aren't really white to begin with.. more a pinky grey.. so at smaller scales it would translate down to a fleshy whitish grey, and that's only if you have a fine enough brush and steady enough hands, and are displaying the figure to eagles ;) .. you did great with the eyes at scale conversion a full sized human at the distance to equal a 1/32 figure the eyes would be darker slits any ways. when I was a Kid and used to do lots of 1/35 dioramas i would paint the whites of the eyes first on the face, and by the time i was done, they would still look pretty much like dark slits any ways , even with blue irises lol .

    Found it helpful enough to employ TH-cam's option to share it on Tumblr. While I'm not sure these techniques would be applicable to 1/144 scale figures they definitely will translate to Garden scale model railway figures which range through the scales of 1/32, 1/29, 1/24, 1/22. 1/20, and a few still larger scales & maybe even apply to O scale figures in 1/50, 1/48, and 1/43. I do build airplanes in 1/72 and 1/144 scales and there is only so much you can do with pilot and crew figures in those scales, but, hey, some principles can still be applied.
