Windsurfing - 2024 Starboard Kode 125 Review

- In this video Paul takes his new 2024 Starboard Kode 125 out for the first time.
Wind was circa 14-18 knots with a very choppy sea state.
Paul set the board up with outboard footstrap positions and e straps at the back + the 36cm single fin provided with the board.
The sail in this video is a 7m Severne Convert 2023, 5 batten freeride sail.
everyone needs a high-volume waveboard Paul, I am still happy I decided to invest in one (120L) last year: I get to sail in those 14-16Kn days (like this weekend - check my last clip on my channel) where you just wouldn't get going on the normal kit (normal for me is 100L). I either sail it with a 6.4 or a 5.6 & I also use it on float & ride days once we get light side-off days with clean lines... I hope your board turns well on more wavey days with the tri-fins: the shape seems to have improved from the days I had one (2020) - I didn't like that model (it was also mega fragile - Starboard's mega flop flax balsa construction).

I'm 95kg and returning to windsurfing after a gap of 20 odd years. Things have changed an awful lot since my days of riding extreme sinkers in waves in marginal conditions.
I was wondering what wind range you think you have with the 125 Kode and the larger sails.
Hey Julian - welcome to BooM and welcome back to windsurfing. The best sport in the world!
With the 125 Kode, single fin and the 7.0 freeride sail I can get going in 15-17 knots of wind and have some easy blasting.
I was really surprised how well the board handled in the blasting set up.
Next down is 5.7 blade and changing the kode to the thruster set up and moving the straps back in board.
I can sail in around 17 knots if there’s waves with that set up too.
For a big board it performs well in the waves.
At the circa 20 knots range I can move done to my 105 Goya One 3 Pro and once the wind is around 22 knots it’s 5.2 weather.
So having the Kode gives me huge flexibity in the lighter conditions.
I have used it with 5.7 in proper float and ride conditions and it was good. It doesn’t sink with me on it but uphauling small boards is never fun.

Question on powerbox fins, the seem to have a different configuration fin to screw in board, not in middle but more aft, so limiting interchangeability. Have the 135 2021 model, curious if it is an true upgrade with new shape. Bit worried on my bigger fins and 77 and 72 sail combo
Hi - yes the big fin configuration is very different to normal. The fin is set very far back on the head making it very far back when screwed into the board.
The fin felt rock solid and I push really hard against it without losing grip until I totally overloaded it deliberately.
The board comes with the 36 big fin and 25 main fin for the tri set up.
I don’t see why it wouldn’t be compact with other powerbox fins.
In terms of board design compared to previous Kode models I’m not familiar with the 2021 version but the difference between the 2023 and 2024 125 Kode is massive. They are completely different shapes.
What sail range have you been using on it , looking at a 125sls duotone for float and ride . 5.8 - 6:7 ?
Yep. Exactly that. I have a 5.7 2022 Severne Blade and a 7.0 Severne Convrt.
The 125 is amazing with the 5.7
I bought the 7.0 so I don’t miss getting out in really marginal conditions but tbh I’m not keen on sails over 5.7
My next board down is my Goya One 3 Pro 105 and once I’m fully powered on the 125 and 5.7 and can start moving to the 105 and either 5.7 or 5.2
What was your top speed? Does it jibes easier compared to a freeride board?
I am thinking of getting one of those or the fanatic one
I don’t track top speed as I’m more interested in wave riding, jumping etc but going fast is great fun especially on. 7.0 and that board set up with a big fin and outboard straps.
One of the other guys that day got a top speed of 26mph and I was keeping up with him no problem so I guess around the 25mph level, maybe more in the gusts.
I was impressed how fast it was!

Yes, I was 94kg at time of filming 2 weeks ago. Now down to 91kg but always around the 90kg area.
