I'm making the PVC drying rack today. My yard is too small for a clothesline but with this rack I can either set it out in the sun on my deck or use it in the basement during the winter. I just need something to dry things like jeans, towels, throw rugs...you know, heavy stuff that takes too much time burning electricity in the dryer. Here's the shopping list in case ya'll wanna make one yourself.
• 4 10-ft lengths of 1/2" pvc pipes
o Cut at 36” x 11
o Cut at 15.5" x 2
o Cut at 3" x 8
• 8 corners (or socket elbows as they are called at Lowe's)
• 6 T-fittings

I did stuff like this for my children when they were young. Cut all kinds of pvc, pipes with connectors and made all kinds of forts, tents and hideaways, we all had a blast.
When we were done, everything broke down and put the pipes in a small holder and the connectors in a bag.
What memories.

The heavy cabinet in idea 2 won't last long with plastic anchors in drywall. Plastic anchors are for concrete block and similar materials. There are many other choices for mounting to drywall (toggle bolts, Molly bolts etc.) but nothing you use will make drywall a good structural mounting material for heavy objects like the cabinet. Find studs or install backing material of some sort if you want it to last.

you'd think that a strip of wood painted to match the wall, which could span the studs would be a better option. i'm cringing, thinking of this thing crashing down. all the effort.......
A plastic rawlplug absolutely can hold in plasterboard. There are ones are for concrete but also ones made for plasterboard
The only way they are coming out is of enoug force is pulling one directly out of the wall and that force is great enought to sheer the threads of the screws out of the plastic. In this case theres very little weight actually puling on the screw, as with most cases like this that majority mof the weight is hanging off the screw. Even with a cleat system, the only force pulling on the screw is any leverage thats occuring and there doesn't seem to be very much with how shallow the box is.
I'd trust those to hold my body weight.
Cases like this aren't great for something like a floating shelf where there's a lot of leverage pulling the screw directly outwards and it need to be really tight to ensure the shelf doesn't slope down.
Almost anything quick is short lived by definition yet it never ceases to allude us of its obvious principal.

When I watch an expert using the Kreg Jig I get super impressed!! That laundry room idea was amazing!

@@GoodlyEarth 💯 serious. Found instructions here on YT then added a water hose connection and simply drilled drip holes in the top supports. I can control the water flow from the connection and spent less than $40 on it. Used sand in the pipes for stability and bought clear shower curtains from Dollar Tree 🤣 We are upgrading after this year to greenhouse plastic, the shower curtains just don't last but a season or so.

I've used PVC pipe to make a cage around my blueberry bushes with bird netting over it. That way I got more blueberries than the birds did.
The first video with the PVC pipe towel rack...you could fill the pipes with sand to make it so it won't blow over. Where I live, it's 15 MPH winds 8 months a year.

I used to use PVC pipe and fittings for many DYI projects. The price has increased nearly 3x since the beginning of 2022 making other options a far better choice.
I didn't build anything, just bought it, but I think it works well to solve the yard flooding problem I had. I bought some of those deep drip watering stakes that go in the ground to allow water to get in the ground faster. A handyman used some kind of big drill machine to make the holes in ground and put the stakes in, filling the holes with the dirt after. I bought some red paint to paint the tops because they're beige and can blend in with surroundings.
I use pvc and pvc glue to make a lot of things. My favorite that I have made is the soft light box for taking photos of my sculptures. I didn't use the pvc glue for that though so that I could disassemble it to store when not in use. Heidi

Nice idea on the PVC. I have done similar stuff. I have only one suggestion. I found that it is so light that it often blows over with the slightest bit of wind. I poured some sand into the pipes before I totally sealed them. This really helped. Great video.

The Murphy cabinet--I bought one of these. I wanted a small desk and had limited space. Worked beautifully. Kept it open but could close it if we had people over and needed the room. It got questions when it was closed--what was that beautifully finished wooden thing on the wall? They were fascinated by the thing and surprised to see what it was!

According to my own idea, I made this towel rack a few years ago. I still use this. If you put some cement mortar inside the pipe, it will stabilize well
In that laundry room project, that wall has a stud every 16 inches. Your project table and the cleat are greater than the space between the studs... I highly suggest that you locate the stud that you missed and get one good solid anchor. Also the cleat is likely 1/2 inch.. adding a half inch block at the lower edge of the shelf will help protect the wall and allow for vertical stability.
I was thinking she needs to find the stud also if she expects to keep detergent & etc on the shelves. Otherwise sooner or later it'll fall.
@@brotherjames2204 Or at least choose better drywall anchors. Toggles or something that holds up to the motion of raising and lowering those legs. I wouldn't want to see the heartbreak of putting all of her creative heart into a project and then have the wall deteriorate to the point that she ends up storing that shelf in the garage as a "one day I will get this back up" project.
Why not just spend $30 at Wally's on a cubby rack that reaches the ground and leave the wall alone??? More storage and the pla k can be placed from the washer to the dryer... Space saver and nothing in the middle of the walkway...

Lol for the price of the pvc you can probably just by a laundry rack that's even foldable.
I cut 12" lengths, used T's and 90 degrees for the outside edge. I used 12" lengths and X connectors to make a 4' by 8' grid then I lifted it on top of a wooden frame. Zip tied plastic fencing to it. Then attached a tarp to it as a winter/summer cover for my dog pens

The pvc drying rack is a good idea but the price of pvc has gone so high it is cost prohibitive and doesn’t look as if it will be better anytime soon.
I wish I'd thought of this sooner for myself as well, but if there's construction going on nearby you, like building a house that will need plumbing, maybe you can acquire some leftover piping from them. Couldn't hurt to ask, right? Shoot! They might even cut it for you. 🤔The fittings aren't that expensive, at least not at my Lowe's in VA. I just figure that what I will save on not having to run my dryer for things like jeans, towels, or throw rugs, thereby burning more electricity, the overall savings will be worth a few extra dollars, but that's just my opinion. I wish you luck.

Nice project, great idea! As a woodworker, I learned the hard way that cutting the MDF as you did is quite dangerous. Because it is not supported in the middle, it pinches the blade which can create a very dangerous situation called kickback. Best to support the panel with 4 pieces of wood instead of 2, so that the entire panel is supported throughout the cut.

That goes for any piece of wood you're cutting. And probably best to clamp it down.
Ya don't get kick back if you first apply a liberal ammount of milk on the timber then wipe and cut the milk acts like a balm to the cutting edge

i made a volley ball/ badminton set for my back yard by putting pvc poles in buckets and pouring concrete in the buckets and adding eyelets on the poles at levels for the volley ball and badminton nets then topping the poles with pipe end pieces. have had these for years now.
Heck yes on the rack!!! I have a lot of delicates, that would be perfect for “dry flat” and so on 😻.

I have been making things with PVC pipe for almost 25yrs. My favorite was a tube chassis racing simulator cockpit with 2" Charlotte brand pvc pipe. JM Eagle is less expensive but more flexible and comes in 8ft length. Charlotte is significantly more rigid but a lot more expensive and generally can only be found in 2ft lengths. If weight is not a concern or you want things heavier and need rigidity I have also filled PVC pipe with Cement + Flow Control. It makes the cement act more "liquidy". Just make sure to plan your pour so that it has a direct path to the bottom and a way for air to escape so you don't have voids. Sometimes this may mean filling something in a few sections progressively. It's also worth noting that PVC us not particularly UV stable so I would definitely paint anything that is going to be outside or in direct sunlight.
Will paint protect it from UV? Any particular kind of paint or just any paint?
@@ed7519 I would suggest spray paint made for plastics like Fusion and stick to a lighter color as light colors reflect more UV light. Skuffing the surface with a fine grit sandpaper just to take off the sheen will also help it stick better or you can use a spray adhesion promotor.

And now their is an entire section of pvc "boards". 1 by, quarter round, even 4X8 sheets. Oh the wonder! And yes, you can glue it together with pvc cement. The only thing that doesn't work well is routering it. You can do it, but the routered edge is rough.
Do scuff with 400 or 600 grit paper. Then spray bonding primer, then paint. Bonding primer makes paint stick to anything. I did cheap nightstand with chalky finish paint. Without the primer the paint could scrape off with a finger nail. With the primer It would require scraper or something

I started my basement a few years ago. STOP watching TH-cam and do the garage! It's not too late for you. Lol. Ive added some cool stuff to my project like repurposing cedar deck boards for shop walls, curved handrail so handrail is one piece top to bottom. But videos will lead you to greatly underestimate complexity and time involvement of such things.

Possible glue SOME of the pipes together, but leave some unglued so you can take down the legs and store it easily.
You can make the PVC tube stick together by adding a squirt of acetone to the Assembled project.😎
Like the rack in first project, already have one to dry area rugs.
2cd project, didn’t need the extra storage. Cut out the drywall and one frame stud. Put cross studs to reinforce the frame stud with a cut out section. Cut an MDF board to fit inside the framing studs. Attached hinge to the bottom and the bottom cross board. Two small chains were attached to support the MDF board once laid out. When closed, the board was flush with the drywall and added a decorative frame and a little knob to pull out.

That’s what I did. Did not need storage, so I built an ironing board into the wall with a flush decorative cabinet door.
neat idea. I would have gone with toggle anchors for mounting the cleat though. those plastic anchors can wiggle loose.

Idea number 2, the plastic anchors are not meant to hold a heavy piece of furniture like that cabinet/table. I hope the drywall holds up for ya. Nice build though.

You can also use the pipe cutter that you basically spin around the pipe and tighten every couple of rotations.
For the Murphy table, I would use poplar. It’s lighter and more durable than mdf.

The parts for the PVC stand would far exceed a similar manufactured product. Each moulded part would cost £4-£5.
