You probably already know but the corporate culture of Costco is focused on the welfare of its employees. For years, the former CEO, Jim Sinegal placed a cap on his annual salary of $350,000. Compare this to other CEO's in similar fields who make 10-30x more at minimum. At various points in his career he has been shown to opt in favor of employees and not the company. In one instance there was a healthcare cut that resulted in a surplus savings. Instead of keeping the savings to pad the bottom line it was decided to have it distributed into the retirement plans of all participating employees. Top it off with one of the highest paying employer's for cashier positions and you can see what the company's values are. Example interview th-cam.com/video/yWRTIRitKX0/w-d-xo.html
A few things from a 10 year employee: The "center court" thing isn't necessarily true. Corporate has a lot to say about the location of where items from the previous seasonal area (for example if we're switching from furniture typically sold January through March to Home and Garden typically sold from March through July) is. We have to put those items found in our seasonal areas that didn't sell SOMEWHERE and typically they'll be somewhere in Hardlines (the non-foods side of the warehouse). It varies from region to region and warehouse to warehouse. Prices ending in .97 are not the only items marked down to make sure they make room for new items. At the warehouse managers discretion items can be marked down further beyond the initial 0.97 markdown. Typically they will end in .00 or .50. The asterisk does not indicate that the item is at its "lowest price it will be," it only notes that the item is marked "for deletion" by buyers at corporate indicating to stock crews and members that the item may no longer be purchased for some time. Typically these items are items we were giving space to determine their sales and whether they're worth keeping stocked as opposed to a competitors similar product. If you see a Costco carrying multiple versions of the same items in different brands, that's very unusual. We typically just carry our Kirkland Signature (KS) brand and one brand name version of a product. If there are two brand names and KS, typically those two brands are duking it out for the coveted alternative to KS. KS Vodka was once manufactured by Grey Goose. We bought the factory where KS Vodka was produced by Grey Goose and now produce it ourselves to the same specifications. I also don't understand all this talk about the "sheer number of products" at Costco. A typical warehouse carries 4,000 SKUs. A typical grocery store carries around 40,000 SKUs. One of the reasons we're able to keep prices so low is because we spend less time stocking far fewer items, and therefore we can run skeleton crews to stock such a large building, keeping payroll low.
You forgot to mention the # symbol indicates an EPC (emergency price change for non employees) which could indicate an item needs to sell through quickly or it is a competitive pricing that was dropped after the store opened. If you see the # symbol maybe consider jumping on that deal. There's a lot of secrets most videos don't cover but us 31 year employees are more than glad to help our members save money by offering tips.
@@TetyV You're quite welcome. I have a family of 4 so I try to save myself money too. Another thing I do as a shopper is buy the limit on rebate items so I can save them because when the rebate expires you won't see another rebate for 3 or more months. TP, dish soap, shampoo, pet meds, razors, etc have a long shelf life so they don't go to waste and I don't have to pay full price when they aren't on rebate because I just use up my stockpiles.
A few things from an employee. The asterisk doesn’t mean it’s been marked down at its lowest price, just that it’s a pending or deleted item. We can still get a few shipments in before that item is gone. Also, the center area (centers) isn’t always things on sale. Part of the center area is Domestics, products that usually stay. And the other half of the center area is the seasonal area, so those products vary from Christmas trees and toys, to furniture. Products on sales are usually on the fence near the entrance door, and on end caps.
yeah but it all still comes down to, "buy what you need only." I never buy things I never use or need because it saves me a few cents. The greatest savings at Costco will always be the $1.50 Hot dog with a drink.
Love Costco. My dad was shopping for some Nexuim. There was a Costco brand version. It was exactly the same as Nexuim. But it was 10 dollars less. Nexuim was 24 dollars for three capsules. Costco was 14 dollars for three capsules.
Love their vanilla ice cream, latex gloves (for chopping hot peppers or garlic, applying sunless tanner, cleaning up dog accidents, etc), paper towels are better quality than any other brand, great buy on saline solution, and finally a cold bottle of water for a quarter on the way out. Love it
The ( * ) at the top right corner does NOT mean it is at its lowest price. It means the item is at the end of its cycle, either for the season, or permanent.
I wish they would take away the samples your probably the person with one thing in his shopping cart too blacking all the aisle to get a free sample.. plz go somewhere else
Dasani (as Aquafina) is filtered tap water, it's not natural spring water. I'm not saying it's bad, I'm just saying I don't expect much from it so I never buy it.
Some info that I’ve learned working on the drawings for the architecture firm that designs all the Costco’s: KS toilet paper and paper towels are in the back because they want you to go the farthest into the store to get their most popular item. The gas will always be at least a few cents (if not up to almost a dollar) off gas stations in the area because Costco does their research and guarantees they have the lowest price, and they can do that because they sell so many gallons so quick. The $1.50 hotdog has been the same price since Costco was started in 1981 and will never change price because Costco knows this item alone can get tens of thousands of people in the store. And the crazy part is, they lose money on the hotdog but just recently started making their own food plants to save 10 cents on every dog, so they can keep that $1.50 price. Last thing: there’s about 785 Costco’s in the world, exactly 100 in Canada at the moment and about 300 in the USA as well as 6 Costco’s underway in China that are projected to be in the top 10 most profitable warehouses in the world.
While I understand the need to pinch pennies and living on a budget, the people who will wait in line for hours at Costco and Kroger to save $1.85 on a tank of gas.....come on.
In Phoenix AZ. Costco gas is $2.55 while the Circle Ks in tje surrounding area are still at $2.90. Fuck it im going to Costco especially since I drive a truck.
Most of the time it’s for the gasoline, hot dogs, frozen yogurt, tires, and a cow for Christmas. Their meat is among the best. Roast chicken delicious and competitively priced. Hot dog hack: take it home, take it out of the bun, toast it, add condiments; split the hot dog in half lengthwise and put it in frying pan, turn both sides. 😋 From my observations at the food court (at least in my area) families with both parents working physically demanding jobs will make dinner of it. Not very cool to use someone else’s card. 😐
Wowowee a Blendtec Total blender is a whopping $700 in Costco Australia and in America the same for $280 and with two jars not just one! The Sunbeam Cafe Series® Blender (PB9800) is $200 at Bing Lee and it has a more powerful motor than Blendtecs'. A fool and his money are easily parted...
My husband and I can eat dinner there for less then $5 and it's good. Try the food court out, yum. But never go there on Sunday because it's crowded. Also the prescriptions there are the lowest and you don't need a membership. I even get my dog meds there.
We bought our vehicle ( 2019 Honda Ridgeline) through Costco- an amazing experience- no hassles at all - one of the easiest purchases we have ever made
As a 23yr. costco employee,I have to say this video couldn't be more incorrect.Between 3-5 on any day is the busiest shopping time.Going 45 mins before closing, good luck, you"ll be standing in line for 10-15 mins waiting to check out.Usually only 2 maybe 3 cashiers as the store gets ready to close.People really need to do more research before making inaccurate statements.
I am a very smart shopper, always observing what is going on in a store so I know the best time is to buy certain products and when it is the busiest. I find that 1100-1600 is the busiest, but after 1700 is great especially on the weekends. Any day just before closing is the fastest because there are few customers and the smallest lineups of the day. I seldom wait for more than two minutes at closing time at the checkouts, and as a bonus there are many employees who will gladly help you find what you need in order to speed you through the store. I can easily be in and out in less than twenty minutes.
As a 20 year Costco shopper I realized the stores are practically dead right around 5:00pm weekdays. It is counter-intuitive I admit but I have never been wrong about it. I think all the moms are at home with their kids or hauling them around to sports practice and such, or people are in the car leaving work. It must depend on the city and location, but in my case it is true for 4 of the Dallas, Texas stores. It doesn't take much imagination to see that the entire city seems to be on the road at that time.
Untrue. Im a Costco employee and you can’t shop unless you have a membership. In order for us to start your transaction we have to scan your membership first. The thing about “center court” is false. the asterisk and items ending in .97 is untrue as well. If you really want tips then just ask an employee 🤷🏽♀️
We allow anyone in that wants to use the pharmacy or if they want to buy alcohol. No membership needed for alcohol purchases. Don't know if this is true for all locations though.
Untrue its illegal to deny access to the pharmacy. Federal law prohibits a paid membership to gain any access to a pharmacy. Even if theirs another one across the street.
One thing that is absolutely wrong with this video is the comment about "the huge number of items" - what sets Costco apart from WallyWorld or VoldeMart or your local grocery store is that Costco carries a LIMITED number of high quality items - say, 4 to 6000 - while a grocery store may have 50,000. BTW, you can buy $10,000 watches here too.
A few years back their Kirkland products were very cheap than similar brand name ones, not anymore. Many of the Kirkland products are a tad lower to keep them in competition.
Those concerned with cost/savings should watch the per unit costs. It is not too uncommon to find that the same or similar is cheaper per unit elsewhere.
I work at a costco and a majority of this isnt true except the times you can shoo in peace. We typically are not busy during the week days 45 mins before we close.
Costco also has items specially formulated for them. You might find the same frozen orange chicken at Walmart, but in order to stock at Costco, you have to meet their standards such as no hormones.
I have a question. Why does costco's on the west do 2 packs of milk and in central and east coast Costcos you can buy your milk singularly? I like my cheap milk but I rarely need 2 at a time.
I think it has to do with individual state regulations about club sales or how the agreements with suppliers are structured. The idea is to prevent direct competition with regular grocery stores. It's why you see ketchup or other condiments only sold in packages of two or more in the club. The buying clubs were supposed to be for small businesses so they have to sell products differently than regular retail stores do.
OK, here's something most people don't know about Costco: their five business principles which make them, according to many business journals, the most ethical company in America. They are, in order of importance, 1)Obey the Lay; 2) Take Care of our Members; 3) Take Care of our Employees; 4) Respect our Vendors and lastly 5) Reward our Shareholders. Too many companies invert the first and last.
@@tracygordon6369 really? I thought it was pureology. Either way it's awesome :) I just have to switch between Kirkland and a more cleansing shampoo because it can start to build up a bit. It really keeps my hair healthy though.
Pharmacy is opened to non members. You don't need to show membership card to go in. Just tell them you are using the pharmacy service. Also for purchasing liquor too.
Yes. That is due to laws. It does vary from state to state though. In order to buy regular merchandise in the regular part of the store though, you do need a membership
Heard it was same for optical and hearing aids. Just tell entrance staff what you’re there for and you don’t need membership. I had a friend who got her Moms casket at Costco and saved a few hundred dollars.
No mention of the $4.99 oven cooked chickens? Best deal, ever!!!!!!! Also, their return policy can't be beat. I will only buy a video game console from Costco. If it becomes defective after a few years, I don't have to deal with Sony's or Microsoft's horrible tech support. Just box it back up, and exchange for a new one!
Yes, you can use a Costco gift card to buy stuff without a membership, but god help you when you do. The cashier has to call a supervisor, who then tries to tell you that you can't use the card without being a member. Then the supervisor calls a manager, and they go through the same routine, and the manager says yes, you can use the card, but they have to fool the register somehow. By this time you've wasted 10 minutes and the people in line behind you are getting grumpy. All you really have to do is ask the person behind you in line if they'd mind letting you scan their membership card. There's no real risk to this so 90% of the time people will let you do it.
I should clarify - I was only suggesting borrowing a membership card from someone in line if you are using a Costco gift card. If you aren't, then Costco is indeed likely to deny your purchase.
Ok, so now I know this is strategic tension! I have done this exact thing- buying gift cards from Mom's membership for the past year. All you have to do is tell the cashier, before she starts ringing up the items, that she needs a code 99. She will then yell for a manager and will input the code while he attempts to badger you. One was a jerk to the second power! I kid you not.....AND don't even think about returning an item with a cash card purchase as those women will convince you that you're going around the system thus, making you feel like a second rate citizen. Whatever tho!
Not many warehouses will let you do that. We are required to check people's pictures on their membership cards and if they don't match, we ID them, and they can't use the card
Code 99. Might be California only but you don’t need a membership to buy alcohol. Companies can’t legally put membership regulations on alcohol apparently. Great for stocking up the ol beer fridge with the Costco price tag.
I think the only two things in there that people might not know already is that the Costco gift card can be used by non members and the vodka. Everything else seemed like common knowledge that applies to all stores. I love the store and my membership but this video is just lacking in useful information considering how great the store is to shop at and from what i have heard also work for.
There are many things that are a good deal but there's just as much crap and stuff that is not worth the price but it looks like a good deal. People end up spending more than what they need or use, buy what you want but you aren't saving much on half of their stuff.
They swipe your membership card to ensure it’s valid during checkout.... so unless you’re intending to steal, you won’t be leaving the store unless you have a membership card.
And you better make sure you are using YOUR own card. Cards are non transferable. You will be stopped from shopping if your cashier has worked for more then 2 weeks
hey, Costco just opened up near us and it was PACKED!!! not enough parking. and not big enough. opening day I just walked in since I'm a member, non-members waited in LOOOONG lines just to sign up. another Costco about 40min away, there's barely any ppl there. location's a byatch to get to. and the constant road construction to get there doesn't help it at all. just wanted to let y'all know.... 😁
The center of the store is from front to back, seasonal (furniture or holiday items) clothing, then media, explain how that inherently has the best deals???
Have very often found better prices elsewhere. But when I want something that is a good value there, I borrow a friend's card and pay cash. Also, no one needs a card to use either the outside restaurant area or the pharmacy in some states. If you just happen then to cruise into the food sample area, well.....
The clips I saw were from idiocracy, employee of the month, and modern family (tv show). Dont remember others. I'm not watching this clip again. Most of it was untrue (12 year employee, senior management within a location)
Can we all finally agree that the word "hack" has lost all meaning? Apparently what passes as a "hack" these days is a barely interesting observation about a retail pricing strategy.
Because of these “tips” the gift cards are not what they once were, what I mean is A lot of stores are now cashing them out for you AFTER your purchase to prevent you from making another purchase if you’re not a member. Also the ending in .97 thing...not Not NOT a national markdown. Stores 50 miles apart might have completely different markdowns.
Do you have any cool Costco tips?
Mashed if u don’t go you save money

Mashed items that end in 7 cents are being discontinued

I work at a costco and a majority of this isnt true except the times you can shoo in peace. We typically are not busy during the week days 45 mins before we close.
Costco also has items specially formulated for them. You might find the same frozen orange chicken at Walmart, but in order to stock at Costco, you have to meet their standards such as no hormones.
Costco vodka with black cherries put in the bottle is amazing...leave it for 12 months if you can.
In certain states you don’t need a membership to use the pharmacy
0:30 THATS OUR COSTCO :O
“Welcome to Costco, I love you”
haha welcome to costco i love you straight to the point i love that
I have a question.
John C You’re better off not drinking any cow puss I mean milk at all.
You can’t shop at Costco with no membership
Lots of good laughs. Love my 1.50 hot dog.
Sharing our code of ethics I see.
Should at least link what show each clip is from, I'm actually curious now.
Stop with the cuts! Just get to the damn point!
I love ❤️ Costco stuff
I really love Costco moisture shampoo and conditioner... It's literally just like a salon brand but sooo much cheaper and it lasts me for months
There was a rumour it was originally made by Paul Mitchell brand.... awapuhi or something like that
@@tracygordon6369 really?
You actually need a membership to buy liquor
All we needed waz a list with theze thingz on there, no need for a money-hungry video!
As a guy. I HATE to shop. But I can spend hours walking around Costco, Frys Electronics and Home Depot and not buy much.
Not That You Asked my local Costco will not let you do this. I’ve seen them refuse service several times when catching someone.
I should clarify - I was only suggesting borrowing a membership card from someone in line if you are using a Costco gift card. If you aren't, then Costco is indeed likely to deny your purchase.
Not That You Asked oh. i see.
& I like your name. lol
You can also buy private planes, I read it the last time Costco sent their magazine
Their lawn battery is $20.00 more than Walmart. Their prescription price is high, I paid $4.00 at war mart instead of over $35 some charge at Costco.
Code 99. Might be California only but you don’t need a membership to buy alcohol. Companies can’t legally put membership regulations on alcohol apparently. Great for stocking up the ol beer fridge with the Costco price tag.
This is the same for Indiana.
The Costco I used to work at sells French fries at the food court. I heard it’s one of the very few that does so.
I think the only two things in there that people might not know already is that the Costco gift card can be used by non members and the vodka. Everything else seemed like common knowledge that applies to all stores. I love the store and my membership but this video is just lacking in useful information considering how great the store is to shop at and from what i have heard also work for.
In my local store (Fairfax, VA), I can't buy anything even if my parents buy me one of those reloadable gift cards. It's definitely up to the store.
I work at Costco and its true every costco has different policies
@@thatonedude2550
That is true
I love Costco!!
Wait a minute; I LOVE COSTCO!
There are many things that are a good deal but there's just as much crap and stuff that is not worth the price but it looks like a good deal. People end up spending more than what they need or use, buy what you want but you aren't saving much on half of their stuff.
You can also rent cars from Costco!
And you now get 2% back on your Costco Executive rewards membership through Costco Travel. So that rental car pays back!
Shout out to Fresh off the Boat!
Gregory Wolff yuhhhhhhh
Gregory Wo
Great show!
Dont have costco but watches the vid
I love Costco❤
I love Costco
hey, Costco just opened up near us and it was PACKED!!! not enough parking. and not big enough. opening day I just walked in since I'm a member, non-members waited in LOOOONG lines just to sign up.
another Costco about 40min away, there's barely any ppl there. location's a byatch to get to. and the constant road construction to get there doesn't help it at all.
just wanted to let y'all know.... 😁
You don't get to cut the line by ordering items at the register instead of at the food court. There's no advantage to doing it
This commercial was sponsored by Costco😂😂😂😂
We go there some weeks we do to there all the time and sometimes I get food cought like i have mango smoothie and the food
Enter Costco exactly when they open on a weekday- best experience overall and you'll avoid getting stuck looking at items you don't need.
One last thing:Costco generally tries to open15 to 20 minutes before the posted opening time. That's the best time to shop.
Is costco cheaper per item than walmart? Or is walmart still cheaper?
The center of the store is from front to back, seasonal (furniture or holiday items) clothing, then media, explain how that inherently has the best deals???
Babby pikshr,s
Whats the name of that movie they show throughout this video?
So do the coffins come in a bulk package too?
Have very often found better prices elsewhere. But when I want something that is a good value there, I borrow a friend's card and pay cash. Also, no one needs a card to use either the outside restaurant area or the pharmacy in some states. If you just happen then to cruise into the food sample area, well.....
You do need a card to go to the food court.
Well, depends on where it is. In warmer climates, they can be outside where non-members can use them.
Love me some Costco
That long Costco line & clapping was @ the newest Monterey Park Costco in SoCal!
I’m literally at Costco for the free samples
Surprised no one has asked this. But was was the movie clip they were showing over and over again at Costco?
The clips I saw were from idiocracy, employee of the month, and modern family (tv show). Dont remember others. I'm not watching this clip again. Most of it was untrue (12 year employee, senior management within a location)
2:28 LOL
is that constance wu in the video with the kid vid 1:40? And may I also know which movie or tv series it got it from? thanks
Yes....so fricken nice.
try getting served at the till it takes longer than the shop
i love a place where they don't ask about food allergies when giving out samples
like no i'm not allergic to coconut water
Darkstealthgamer they have warning signs most people dont read
all these are pretty common knowledge tbh
Costco has left the chat
That reminds me I need toilet paper
Me too!!
_a lot_ of toilet paper ;-)
Talk about the pandemic
Was going to get a Costco card. But since I barely shop there I’ll just get my mom to get me cash cards!
Oh I was getting Costco mixed up with Caldor. Love Costco
I’m not a member but can I just use the Costco cash card to get in to the shop? I was told only members with their card could get in.
Some locations you certainly can.
Caleb P thanks Caleb, I’d love to put that myth to rest
I need one of those bears...
I love this place.....
Can we all finally agree that the word "hack" has lost all meaning? Apparently what passes as a "hack" these days is a barely interesting observation about a retail pricing strategy.
I buy a Costco membership just for the muffins
Because of these “tips” the gift cards are not what they once were, what I mean is A lot of stores are now cashing them out for you AFTER your purchase to prevent you from making another purchase if you’re not a member.
Also the ending in .97 thing...not Not NOT a national markdown. Stores 50 miles apart might have completely different markdowns.
Which movie are the scenes from?
They actually only sell 4000 items were as a typical grocery store has around 40,000.
Child in the car and father , both wearing no seat belt.
