STORYLINE:
One of the most popular sports stars of any era, boxing great Muhammad Ali, was given a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame on Friday.
In a break with tradition, the star will be installed on the wall instead of the sidewalk at the Kodak Theater entertainment complex in Los Angeles.
Ali said that he didn't want his name to be walked on by people who, in his words "don't have no respect for me."
The city of Los Angeles has declared that Jan 17 will be "Muhammad Ali Day" to honour the former heavyweight champion's 60th birthday and his achievements.
Interest has been growing in the life of Muhammad Ali in recent years.
He was born as Cassius Clay in Kentucky and converted to Islam in 1964.
In 1967, Ali refused to be drafted to fight in the Vietnam War, claiming he should be exempt as he was a Muslim minister.
As a result he was forced out of boxing at the height of his career, convicted of draft evasion and sentenced to prison.
The US Supreme Court overturned the conviction in 1971.
When allowed to box again, Ali briefly retired, then returned to knock out Jerry Quarry and went on to become one of the most beloved athletes in any sport.
Ali, who suffers from Parkinson's disease, told the enthusiastic crowd Friday that his childhood ambition was to be controversial and to help those in need.
