    Thank you so much! I bought 20+ Comfort skeins direct from RH last year and I have always wondered about the stitch guide and softness compared to the SS branded. I also have lots of Caron yarns in #4 as well and have been concerned with mixing it with the comfort due to the gauge being odd. I will definitely do the swatch idea to compare them.

    Wow I loved this video. Last year I had purchased 20 some skeins of the comfort yarn when Red Heart had a 30% off sale (last year they sold directly from their site which was far better then the now combined site) and had been wondering about the size gauge they have on the label as the yarn feels just like the super saver yarn I have in stock. When looking at patterns I had often worried that if I use the comfort yarn instead of the super saver that the project suggests, if the project will come out looking too tight or smaller then indicated. I have been crocheting for years and rarely can I get a full afghan to come out to be the size indicated. Yes, I adjust hook sizes, I adjust tension, the project comes out not needing blocking, the stitches all look the same, (no variances within the project) and yet the projects are always a few inches off on large projects. Small projects like the beautiful sweater I made for my Pomeranian came out just right. Go figure. I had been thinking it was the comfort yarn that causes the size issues lately. So glad to know it's just me lol

    Interesting. I made a project with Red Heart Comfort once and I thought it felt a bit thicker than Super Saver to me. But it could have just been that colour or that particular ball.

    • @JaydaInStitches
      @JaydaInStitches  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There is DEFINITELY variation of thickness between balls of the same brand, especially colour. I find the Spring Green by Red Heart, for example, is really thin compared to all the other super saver colours!

    That's quite odd that they'd yield very different results when worked up since they're seemingly identical. I personally haven't found the Red Heart Comfort in any of the craft stores in my area or at any of my local Wal-Marts. I'll have to buy it online and see for myself. You're right about the variegated yarns being much smaller in skein size. The Red Heart variegated yarns come in skeins of about 236 yards and the regular Red Heart Super Saver comes in about 364 yard skeins. But this is very informative 😀

    • @JaydaInStitches
      @JaydaInStitches  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jonathan, I have to admit, I expected there to be a difference since often the Comfort appears a little thicker than the average super saver, but I tried it against a few super savers and they always work up nearly identical!

    Hmmm what a curiosity. Same materials, same weight, same everything.....but different stitch gauges??? Is this to maybe sell more product perhaps? Or is comfort maybe softer to the feel? Sometimes super saver can be scratchy. Thanks for doing that experiment for us!

    • @JaydaInStitches
      @JaydaInStitches  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! I know, odd, right? And no, there isn't a feel difference between them either....I think it's mainly colourways and skein size :)

  • @loris9464
    @loris9464 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Question: I find I can never match the gauge swatch size for any project. I try using different hook sizes, tightening or loosening my tension, etc. I end up always missing the count. Not enough stitches, I go up in hook size, now too wide, I go back in hook size and loosen stitches. Then once I hit the mark there, the height doesn't work, So, as I adjust the hook or tension to get the width right the height doesn't work. If hit the height the width doesn't work.
    I'm not new to crocheting and I have no trouble working up intricate stitch afghans and having them come out looking perfect, but they never match up in size. Any suggestions? Is this normal? I would love to make a sweater but afraid it will come out all wonky.
    (I'm not new to crocheting and I have no trouble working up intricate stitch afghans and having them come out looking perfect, but they never match up in size. For afghans, slight size differences haven't been a problem. I just would love to make something like a sweater where hitting gauge is a big deal)

    • @JaydaInStitches
      @JaydaInStitches  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! I have often found that my samplers don't match up with the gauge suggested - if it's close I go for it! A lot of the time it has to do with the yarn specified, matching yarn weight can often be the biggest issue. If I'm making a sweater and my gauge is close, I'll err on the side of a slightly bigger hook or slightly thicker yarn just to be safe - better it's a bit big than too small!

    You did an excellent job of explaining...as usual but what I was waiting for was the meaning of 'Comfort'' vs 'Super Savor' in terms of why 'Comfort'...is it softer? (I can't stand knitting with 'SS' or Hobby Lobby's 'I Love This Cotton' anymore) Thanx :)

    • @JaydaInStitches
      @JaydaInStitches  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Nancy-Jo, I'd say the Comfort feels nearly identical to the Super Saver, only it can be just a tad thicker in some cases (both Comfort and Super Saver weights seem to vary a little from colour to colour).

      @JaydaInStitches  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Teresa, they're very similar. There can be a little variation between colours (I believe dyes can have an effect on the softness or smoothness of some yarn) but generally they are the same. On occasion, the Comfort is just a little thicker than the Super Saver.

    Thanks Jayda for sharing the information. Can you do a video about cotton yarn too. I was just wondering that there are so many tutorials of granny squares and Afghan using acrylic yarn, but not much with COTTON? Any special reason? I know cotton is a bit pricey, but does it feel make the project different to what it was supposed to be? Sorry i m still learning about yarn 😅 any information from a pro will be helpful, thanks

    • @JaydaInStitches
      @JaydaInStitches  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bee, thank you for the suggestion :) I know around where I live, cotton is available in very limited quantities, colours and styles. For the most part, it's best used for dishcloths, and not fancy blankets or clothing. It can be a little more expensive than acrylic, but what's available just isn't as nice as what is available in acrylic. I'm sure it changes from place to place, but I have a feeling that might be a big reason why for most of us crocheters :)

    Thanks Jayda for this piece of information. I need your help; I made granny squares from 2 different Heart Super Saver colors .Upon joining them one turned to be a bit bigger although I made the exact number of rows , used the same hook size and both are supposed to be the same brand & same weight 🤔

    • @JaydaInStitches
      @JaydaInStitches  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Laila, there are often some differences between yarns of the same brand and product line! It can be a little irritating, but not a total disaster :) You can lightly steam block the smaller square to loosen up the stitches and it will be more in line with the sizing of the other ones :)

      # TheSweetLife I have never watched that channel. Just don't give up. I would say the toughest part of crocheting is learning how to hold everything in two hands and feed yourself yarn fluidly so your tension is consistent. All that is just practice. Hi Bertha, I've found that hand rinsing a finished item in water with some hair conditioner softens the yarn and makes it a little more comfortable. Yarn also gets softer after a wash or two :)

    interesting experiment results. I believe two different people came up with the measurements and their tensions were varied.

    • @JaydaInStitches
      @JaydaInStitches  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Melissa, absolutely. We all have different stitch tension, and one will often find small variances between yarns of the same product line too! If gauge is very important to a project, then working up swatches is always advisable!

    • @melissaschaub1275
      @melissaschaub1275 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      when would it be important?

    • @JaydaInStitches
      @JaydaInStitches  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      When making anything that was size specific, like clothing or if you're mixing the yarns and you don't want ANY variation in stitch sizing :)

    Question, is the comfort RH yarn softer than the super saver??

    • @JaydaInStitches
      @JaydaInStitches  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HI Juanita, I don't feel any difference between these two yarns, they're pretty much identical!

  • @greekgoddess9804

    Hi Jayda! I was wondering if you could make a video talking about how to determine how much yarn you need to fulfill a certain project. I've run into a few situations where I've purchased too much yarn or too little because I was essentially guestimating. I know it have something to do with guage, but I'm a little unclear about how exactly you use the gauge.
    Also, I find that there are fundamental differences between the way Super Saver, Comfort and Soft Red Heard yarns feel. Is there a particular reason for this?
    Thank you so much! Lots of love xoxo

    • @JaydaInStitches
      @JaydaInStitches  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ioanna, thank you for the suggestion :) I haven't encountered the Red Heart "soft" or Love yarn yet, but I do buy a lot of the super saver and comfort and to me, there is no real feel difference between the super saver and the comfort. On occasion, I feel like the comfort is a bit thicker than the super saver, but mostly they appear and feel to be the same! There can always be small variances between yarns inside the same product, so that might account for some of your experiences :)

      Hi! If a project calls for a specific yarn, it's best to try and match it (fiber and weight category) as best as possible 😊

      Hi Ashlynn, the hook suggested on the label of ANY yarn is just there for you to try the gauge (also included on the label), You use whatever hook works best for YOUR tension, or the pattern you're working on 😊

      In Canada, we find the Super Saver and the Comfort at Walmart. I don't really a difference in softness between the two. We find the With Love at fabric stores (in Alberta anyway) therefore it's rather expensive and the Soft at Michael's. Our colour choices are limited too. So far, i've only seen 2 of the new ombre SS at Walmart and would love to get my hand on the Lions Brand Mandala but Walmart Canada does not carry them. Ahh, the woes of the Canadian crocheters!! Lol
