- Volvo V70 2.5D A/C compressor clutch engagement and disengagement video. Engaging and disengaging seems to happen more often than should be.
Update 04 april 2012: I stopped using the AC because the past few months we had some very cold temperatures and this caused the compressor to leak a lot (maybe all) of it's oil. AC system still works, but using the compressor without enough oil in the system will eventually break down. I won't take the risk of making more damage to the system or other parts on the drivebelt running the AC compressor without oil.
After I replace my compressor+dryer+expansion valve, I will place a new video with the new situation! Then there is some information to compare..

Indeed. AC worked perfect until about two months ago. We had some serious low temperatures (around -19C) and now it looks like the compressor lost all of it's oil. It still cools, but it is an accident waiting to happen with not enough oil in the compressor if I keep on using AC. Reason it started leaking is a lack of maintenance (apparantly you should replace the filter/dryer in your AC system every 2 years). Too much water in the AC system with quite extreme cold weather = troubles!
@chriswellmans It think you're not right if you responded to my video however I think you are spot on when you responded to tonitokiller's problem. When the air compressor clutch air gap is too big the compressor will not engage and there will be no cooling at all. This happens normally after the engine has warmed up. My a/c compressor still works/cools like a charm however engagement and disengagement happens on a short interval.
This type of system is a CCOT (Cycling clutch orifice tube), it engages and disengages because of the pressure in the system and for fuel efficiency. I tested my ac with a multimeter and the voltage is applied in cycles to engage the clutch so its actually working as it should. other ac systems are different as far as I know!
I am not sure if it's the same with the 2002 V70, but with the model I have it can be as easy as shimming the clutch to get it working properly again. Replacing the clutch is also possible ofcourse. Both solutions are a lot cheaper than replacing the compressor itself...
It is very easy to measure the gap using a feeler gauge.
However before you start changing parts you have to be sure it doesn't want to turn on because of low refrigerant level in your AC system.
@tonitokiller There was/is no real problem. The A/C cools fine however it seems to turn on/off quite often. So far no repairs have been made and it's still cool in my car whenever I turn the A/C on!
True. My experience is that a clutch with a too large gap operates normally but when everything near the engine is warmed up/hot it suddenly disengages and does not engage anymore.

I checked my car, it's the same. You can read in your manual why it is disengaging after some time..
This can have several reasons, but if the compressor still engages I would first check the pipes to and from the evaporator inside the engine bay near the firewall. The return pipe should feel really cold and on a hot day this pipe should also be wet/humid because of condensation taking place. If this is not the case during operation refrigerant is low, there is a blockage in the system somewhere or a problem with compressor. Best analyse with set of manifold gauges! Good luck!
Not normal on any compressor at all (even bus and coach compressors) unless there's an automatic control system that makes the compressor turn off when the desidered target temperature is reached in order to save fuel (ECON mode) and switch it on again when needed. It's either low on gas due to a leak, or the gas pressure got too high (for example: too much gas, dirty condenser, condenser fan not performing as required so that not enough gas coming from the evaporator coil can turn into liquid phase inside the condenser as designed, drier filter that needs to be changed). And the pressure switches (or switch, if multi functional one) sense the too high or too low pressure and switch the field coil inside the compressor's clutch assembly off so that the compressor isn't damaged. And, on my car, an old Vauxhall Agila, when standing still, the radiator fan turns on as soon as i turn the AC on, not after some time.
@billkeno It's cooling still good. I suspect that there is not enough refrigerant in the system. (Last time serviced in 2007.)
Did anyone find a reason? I have 2 V70 D5 and Both do this.
Problem is: at every turn off or turn on while driving, the Car Shakes a Little Little Bit and this ist crap
I now why the clutch disengages after some time. However the time between engagement and disengagement is short. I think it needs servicing.
@kvcuijck Ok your clutch runs fine now? it dosn't stops every 5 sec and run again ?
i still have this problem and my A/C dosn't cool at all, i have checked the air presure and it looks fine , still not have a clue . What can i do ?
@tonitokiller My clutch still does exactly the same as on the video. Despite that it still cools great (40C outside air temp is no prob). I'm not an expert, but I think you should find out if your A/C clutch disengages because of high or low pressure. Maybe there are some fault codes in the OBD system or maybe there is a possibility to read it directly from the pressure sensors?
A common A/C problem on this car is the evaporator inside the dashboard (rust) or the condensor(damage) in front.
check the max gap is .6mm on that model, over that it will go on an off all the time
Shimming the clutch is only needed when the clutch doesn't engage anymore because of a too large gap. This is not the case on this clutch/compressor.

My Volvo 940 with manual AC had the same intervals. My current V70 is more like the same so nothing to worry about it i think. Seems to be normal situation in Volvo however I was wondering like you if everything is o.k. because of this short intervals. Still weird huh? :)
YES IT IS NORMAL IF IT IS NOT COLD MAYBE GAS IS NOT ENOUGH BUT DON'T REPLACE ANY THING.
I would check that the system is not short of refrigerant gas.. If this is the case the compressor would short cycle (run for short period then cut on the low pressure switch) just as yours is doing.. I would also consider plugging a OBD2 code reader (£25 well spent) into the diagnostic socket under the centre arm rest for more fault data..
most likely the air compressor clutch air gap requires adjustment
you need to shim the clutch....
