You put him on my radar,,will now reconsider rats,,I saw that novel in every junk shop during my stay with my Fulham aunty,,,
Met him when he was writing his first book..Living in In Essex with his luvly family...Brilliant artist aswell...Really nice man....DONNA de Lozey....
The gremlin on the reverse of his gravestone is so fitting and clever, Thank you for all the sleeplessness nights, James. RIP
I have read all of his books and they are amazing, he was a genius at his craft, and it's a tragedy that we won't get anymore masterpieces from him. The spear and the secret of crickley hall are my favourite ones, just amazing.
If you like his genre,, then you must read Kafka's Metemorphisis,, a weird strange world in medievil Germany who notices he is changing into a rat,, enough to boil your blood,,
In my opinion probably one of if not the greatest horror novelist of all time, wayyyy better than Stephen King, both books you mentioned are great, , so are the rats trilogy, the magic cottage, you could just go on and on and on, I think I've read everyone of his books, and never ever been dissatisfied or disappointed
Loved James Herbert read all his books .. The Magic Cottage is my favourite 💙
Hi Paul I love James herbert fantastic mind I've read haunting the rats, the rats lair, once upon a time I've so on love his work brilliant man wish he could of done more books im into these things love them shame he went so early bless him rest in peace James God bless you 💙 ❤ 🙏
''Please make sure the door is shut before you leave''
I usually make sure its open !!
Looking forward to this one. I have read every one of his books, love him. One of the best horror writers ever. The Magic Cottage is my favourite. Well done for finding this one...xxx
That's my favourite book too!
I've read all his books. Great writer. The rats was a good one. His stories were horror based but took me on a journey of hideous creatures and crazy mad scientist type characters. In his prologue he always thanked Queensryke for being a source of inspiration.
You read the rats, please tell me you also read the lair and the domain???
@jay jay over the years I got to read all his books. It was magical dystopia.
do you mean the metal band?? = In his prologue he always thanked Queensryke for being a source of inspiration.
It was the mid 80's, I was 11 years old & stuck in hospital recovering from an operation. My eldest brother visited me & had finished reading The Rats on his way to see me. He left it with me & needless to say that was my introduction to James Herbert books. A year later I was reading Stephen King & have been hooked on both ever since.
I loved James Herbert's books when I was a teenager - The Magic Cottage was my favourite - but had no idea he was buried here. I live in a village just outside Horsham but travel backwards and forwards to my hometown of Hove regularly. I drive past a couple of times a week and I'm pretty sure I've been to a service at the church, but it might have been it's sister church, St Gile's.
Read all his books. I haven't found another writer to match his talent since. What a loss. Good one Paul, thanks so much. 👍
James Herbert was a brilliant horror writer, loved reading his books. Love the headstone. Thanks for another great vid Paul 👍🏻
One of my all time favourite authors, master of the macabre and greatly missed 📚🥀🤍✨
Never read his books or indeed heard of him. However, a very talented person gained an OBE for his talent, mainly a horror writer who is investigated by unusual things who today honours this talented writer who is now at peace
In my humble opinion, the greatest horror novelist of all time, surpasses stephen King in leaps and bounds, had a brilliant way of drawing you into his novels.... Great man.. sadly missed
I own all hardbacks ( for show ) 3 copies of Domain ( My fave ) next to magic cottage ;) and two of all of the others as love the first and second cover art. So a big fan and i am very miffed that he left me with no more Christmas reading. Still gutted. Badly missed xxx
Loved all his books
A brilliant writer of horror
Rest in peace, James
A legend
What a literary giant James was. I only read The Fog, which was massively different to John Carpenters movie of the same name.
Thanks so much Paul, for keeping his name at the forefront of literature.
I absolutely loved reading his books. Back in the 70’s when I was growing up I used to read his books along with Shaun Hutson and Dean Koontz. RIP James you were a genius at writing horror.
Loved all his books the best being the Magic Cottage a must for the loyal James Herbert Fan
Thank you Paul, and Barry, RIP James and all that are buried in this awesome churchyard.
Happy Easter!
One of my favourite authors ❤
When I first read The Magic Cottage as a teenager I was seriously spooked, went on to read all his books cos that's the type of person I am!
I'm mildly dyslexic so found reading fiction a chore when younger, except for Mr Herbert.
James Herbert is like a British version of a Stephen King lol I grew up on Stephen King stuff his books and the movies they make out of his books, thanks for sharing Paul. Awesome. May John Herbert rest in peace 🕊️😢 James His birthday was yesterday Paul.
I think - and I may be wrong - but that is a drawing of the Elf: Rigwit from his book Once.
Paul, what a beautiful church ⛪
My favourite author . He held onto life enough to finish his last book ,Ash . Have read them all . My favourite being , Nobody True . One of those novels you can’t put down .

Another great vedio thanks Paul James Herbert most epic genius loved the magic cottage great book died young almost 9 yrs now rip James
Horror not being my cup of tea, the closest I ever came to rats was watching them late at night, perform their acrobatics in the New York City subway, as I made my way home after class.
The size of small cats - and totally fearless, they made big, black garbage bags come alive on the platform, as they went looking for a late night snack.
Lovely church, Paul - and THANK You for bringing attention to such a talented storyteller.
Wishing You a Happy Easter, and as always, looking forward to Your next clip!💕
❤❤ I have read all of his books. He was a brilliant author through and through. They are the sort of books you can not put down. I loved the grave stone to thank you for letting us see it❤❤
Great video Paul, and loved the information. Thank you also to Barry! What a star!
I was dismayed by the state of the surrounding land of the church - especially the graveyard. It was so badly over-grown in some places, and an absolute mud-bath in others. Some of the older gravestones were in such a bad state of repair and this reflected upon the Church - making it seem like the Church itself didn't care for the state of these obviously older stones and the residents. Surely they could put out an appeal for help from local gardeners or local'ish' gardening companies who could get together and help to keep certain parts of the graveyard in better condition. From simply mowing the grass to clearing the over-grown areas, and then someone(s) who know about removing all the moss and whatever it is which is growing over the stones - leaving the whole of the church and it's residents in a much better state. The Church surely could pull together and get a radio appeal, a local newspaper(s) appeal and even an appeal on Facebook, for say an hour a week from people, to begin the clean up, and then the continual upkeep and care.
OK... stepping down off my soapbox, picking it up, tucking it under my arm, and exiting stage left.
Great report Paul. ~ Cobs (GB)
Brilliant writer.
The Rats 🐀 I remembered scary Paul as always a beautiful & brilliant video thanks.
The Survivor is one of the best ghost stories written. Rats, Fog and Survivor were just superb. God rest him.
Everyone of his books are brilliant - great writer as good as Stephen King in my opinion
Thanks for going to see James herbert's grave. One of my favourite horror authors, I have collected all his books (just getting around to reading them all now lol ) I like how he puts the shock factor and goes to the limit in his writing especially the rats and the fog, sadly missed as an author.
One of my favourite Horror writers.
I have never heard of James Herbert but will emdeavor to read some of his books as I am an avid reader. Loved the church.Thank you Paul for this very interesting video.

James Herbert is my No. 1 favourite horror author, and The Rats is my all time favourite horror novel. Jim was, in fact, a HUGE influence on my own aspirations to become a horror writer myself (and I am very glad I did). Still miss him deeply today. This is a great video tribute to the great man.
Thank you Alan appreciate that…. 🙏
@@UnusualThings1 I have just started a new series of videos on my TH-cam channel, in which I review every single novel that Jim ever wrote. Have just uploaded the first one, in which I review my all time favourite Herbert novel: THE RATS.

Hi Paul,
My biological father read all of his books 📚 and he is a massive fan of James Herbert and I love his books too and I really really love your channel it is so fascinating that you go around the country finding famous people's graves and whenever I watch you search the person's grave it makes me smile that you say 'I think of found it...' 😊
Great content and keep up the great work 👍😇
That's a great path leading to the graves, love those trees
Lovely memorial stone , and what a history the church holds. Thanks Paul for another informative video.
Another brilliant video, Paul .... I think you will have to have ... You finally found it 👇 .. on yours 😁.. take care 🙏
🤣🤣
I mentioned James Herbert to you a few months ago and had assumed you had decided against it so I was absolutely thrilled to see this now. I thought you made a great job of it, was very imformative and I have already watch it twice. After my own recent supernatural experience, the novels have all of a sudden taken on a new realism to me and your video has inspired me to revisit them. Thank you Paul x
Thank you for watching…. Yes I always have a list of people but it does take some time for me to get through them… Glad you enjoyed it 🙏
Awesome video Paul. I walk around a few graveyards night or day. I've been inside a few churches admiring their structures. I got into my local Parish Church and the caretake let me go inside the catacombs under the church, which was cool as well.
Anyway loving your stuff, keep up the great work. Catch you on the next one
Looking forward to this one I have got and read all his books and enjoyed everyone of them
Yes a great horror writer...one I have to say I forgot about, nice find Paul. RIP Mr Herbert
Love his books, I grew up not far from mile end, I remember walking down mile end canals after reading the rats, and the rats there are pretty big, almost like a small dog.
Hi paul hope you are well. Love James's work also love the church and of course barry . R.I.P. James.x.
Hi Paul one of my favourite books of his is called the secrets of crickley Hall they even done a TV series on it
Enjoyed this mate, educated me. I did not know who James Herbert was although I have heard of his books.
This video was a bit of a shock? I didn’t know James Herbert had died! The rats was probably one of the best that I read.
Thanks Paul.

"Everyone will die one day, just some people need more time than others doing so."
Great vlog as always Paul, I was in a graveyard last weekend, & when you see the birth date & unfortunately death date, without the age they died, you can't help but do the maths in your head, wanting to know the age they died like this one.. Happy Easter, cheers mate 👍
I just found your channel recently and I've been binge watching your videos all Easter weekend! Thank you for always being so respectful to both the living and dead during your walk arounds.

My favourite author 💞
Thank you for this one Paul, my favourite author read all his books RIP James xx
Loved his books.
My ex read every JH book, we were always pre ordering waiting for his next book to come on sale. You made me giggle on this one with the flame thrower noises lol xx
I remember reading the Rats too, the book was secret contraband at my senior school in the late 70's, everyone was borrowing it, reading it then passing it on. My parents had banned me from reading it. Turns out they had their reasons, i have spent my life terrified of rats. Lesson learned the hard way ,Parents do know best 🤣😂
Visited here today, only briefly as the weather was rubbish and couldn’t get into church to have look. Great video as always Paul x
