- This is an exciting technique to get variegated yarns to "pool" the colors, so that you get a tartan or harlequin effect. It is something to experiment with. With different tensions and types of yarn it will make a difference if it works for you.

Just started crocheting about two months ago. Saw a post on sm about pooling and ran straight to TH-cam. Your video was the first to come up and is excellent! Looking forward to trying this out. Thank you.
I always enjoy your tutorials & your humor!!! 😂"....do u see any planned pooling?...no BC there is none!" Lol! 😂 Awesome teacher! Thank you😊!
Thanks Mikey. I was intriqued by the color pooling concept and viewed many videos and was very confused. Once again, your teaching was spot on clear and wonderful. I should have started here.
Thank you for accentuating that everyone is different! I think a lot of crocheters forget that a lot
I have never been so relaxed watching your planned pooling video. What I mean is every other video really expresses how important it is to count the stitches. Yours is the only one that didnt have that. Thanks Mikey you have actually helped me understand it a little better.
Mikey, I’ve watched several pooling tutorials and was still confused - but, you saved the day. I get it now. I’ll stay with it and let it happen 🥹
I just wanted to say thank you for this information. I've been trying for days to get this right. And as you've said, I tried different chain amounts, different size hooks. After your video. One shot. Nailed it. I'm so excited to finish. Thanks again.
Thank you Mikey! Finally, a proper explanation of how to do planned pooling!
This the best technique for this type of yarn. Thank you for sharing. I know I'm late at finding this, but so happy to find it now. Better late than never.
You are so welcome!
FINALLY! Directions I can go by to do this project! Thank you!!!!!
Thank you crochet crowd for making the crochet pooling technique a simple to understand video (easy to understand and follow).
I looked at many videos and tried many times. Thought I was going to wear my skein of yarn out trying to do it. But after watching Mikey do it in the video low and behold I got it.
Mikey, you are such a wonderful teacher. You made this so easy to understand. G'day from 🇦🇺
Thank you so much for a great explanation. I thought the yarns were made that way for fun and not that they actually served a beautiful project. Thank you again.
Thank you! Finally I can get this concept to work! I crochet fairly tightly and I was having an awful time getting this to work for me. I did appreciate the article on your website talking about the color changing needing to be about 14-17 inches apart, that helped me pick my yarn.
Interesting, 14-17 inches apart? Another factor I just learned, thanks!!! I didn't see that article....
Mikey's tutorial and the newest update says at least 6 to 12 inches. Following this tutorial works!
I missed that. So take my measuring tape to walmart with me. Thanks!!!!
I once saw an inkle pattern with a variegated thread. On the top side, it had a lovely diagonal pattern. The bottom side looked like paw prints! I pointed it out to the person weaving the band, and she was surprised and intrigued.
Very neat and easy to do with the way you show us!
Thanks!
This is way cool! Thank you for this very clear tutorial on pooling.
You're amazing thank you . I've been crocheting now for 13 years and this is the first I've heard of yarn pooling and you did an amazing job explaining it so well
Mikey, I really love that you LOVE your craft! I will be jumping on the pooling bandwagon😄
This is the best video tutorial for planned pooling. Thank you!
Thanks Mikey, this saves a lot of hair pooling ;-)
thank you so much! finally I understood how it works! you are Super! Thank you again! ☺
This is absolutely the best and greatest explanation of how to create this pattern. I've also seen other tutorials that have said that you might not be able to see this until after 9-10 rows. Your instructions completely dispels that. As always Thanks for another great tutorial and sharing!🖒👏👏👏💜😊
I really like the way you teach! Thank you!
Thanks for clarifying yarn pooling for me!!! 😃
You are so welcome!
All your explanations in the tutorials are so clear, dear Mikey...THANK YOU! Gotta try this technique soon. Love, to you and all at The Crochet Crowd, from sunny Singapore!
i just love the way you take your time to explain things. now i get it. thank you
That was so neat!!! I always wondered how colors shifted that way. Now I know. :-)
Hi
Ok just as i thought lol this will make me suuuuper nuts
Thank you for your explanation of how to create this pattern.. I was finally able to get this concept ..very well explained compare to many others...Able to get the pattern. others were very confusing....love your videos..thank you for sharing.
Mikey thank you for making videos for us to follow along. I appreciate all that you have taught me.
Thank you so much for making this video! Finally a truly instructional video on this technique!
thank you so much for this, its the best tips and explanation,it makes sense that not all variegated yarns are for planned pooling.
All the other videos on planned pooling emphasis on muddy legs, I have not heard you mention that. Great tutorial and thanks Mikey
Thank you for being so detailed, so we can totally understand about coloring
Thank you for this! I was curious how this worked and you explained it so well. I also never thought to chain extra and just undo the ones that I don't use... that will save me lots of pain in the future!!
I cannot wait to try this and make myself something for once. I am in love
That's so interesting about the tension changing by your personality. The same thing happened with mine!
Thank you! I'm going to use your advice! I had given up but you give hope!!
You are an excellent teacher, thank you!
You are amazing Mikey!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU =)) Finally a good guide with specific whys and why nots ! I cannot thank you enough
Mikes, you made this so easy to understand. Thank you!!! I need to look for some appropriate yarn so I can have a go. Keep up the tuts!

For an afghan, there would be several options. First and easiest would be to use the yarn that takes too long between color changes, like caron cakes or simply soft stripes. The second would be to do squares and match them up and use an invisible stitch to sew them together. Third, and most difficult, would be to count out multiple repeats - but you would have to make sure that every last one of the other balls you were using had the same spacing between colors.
Thank you Micky, you made it look easier than I thought it was, great tutorial.😊🌹.
Thank you so much! I have been afraid to try this, but now I think I can do it!
I like this. Something different. Have to try it after I finish what I'm working on now.
I felt a bit intimidated by this technique int the beginning of this video I was totally lost lol but I began to see what you were talking about as the video progressed. Thank you so much for the tutorial, I'll have to give this a try!
Mikey first of all your the best at explaining thing second I nailed the pattern first try wish I could upload a photo! I used red heart super saver pink camo/camo rose with the 5.5 recommendation.
Thank you...I learned a lot- as I always do from you...Keep it up!
Hot mess love it mikey
thank you, thank you very much! greetings from Puerto Rico! 😎
angelazulification
You guys are the best.. thank you!
I posted a pic of my first attempt on your FB page. I did use a stitch count from another video. I like your explanation better though!
Thanks for the instructions. Gonna give a try

Thanks Mikey, all is appreciated
i remember my cousin showing me how to do planned pooling when we would knit argyle socks (when I was 11), she always made it work, i on the other hand didn't as her tension worked and mine did not, lol so u are correct on everyone's own tension, which basically works for most projects
Very helpful video !
I will definitely be trying it this way with the RHSS earth and sky yarn! I tried it with 20,24,28 and 36 chain and the pooling was being very naughty with the largest hook i used (k hook) I tried the H and I hook as well! I'm so happy that you found a way to make it work! 😁
Thank you so much!! I've watched lots of videos on how to do this. Yours is presented so well. I finally got this!!!☺ Thanks Again!!!
Thank you for showing this method and explaining which yarns work well with it. Wouldn’t it be great if we could order 1 x 1000 yards of the pooling yarn we want. Instead of lots of 100g balls
It seems we are forgetting about the queen of pooling, Laura Bryant. Her book, ARTFUL COLOR, MINDFUL KNITS, explains it all. There is more to planned color pooling than plaids, but her carnival outfit shows plaid in larger panels with striped panels in between. Great idea for an afghan to break up the plaid. Yes, it's a knitting book, but it will work with crochet. The color theory is amazing. She has a video that shows it all the tricks.
You can't make plaids with color pooling; you can only make argyle. They used the absolute wrong term(s) in this video (plaids and tartans are made of squares whereas planned pooling makes diamonds) and you used the wrong term 3 times in your comment.
Seriously.
If I wanted to double the width, would I keep chaining until the first color repeats again, having the color changes repeating twice?
I think that is correct.
great tutorial. Thanks!
Hi! Amazing tutorial! I was wondering how you know what color is the "start" ive tried a few times with a different yarn then you and i just cant seem to nail the one to start on! Thank you!
I'm assuming to make a blanket you would just do multiples of the chain pattern? I'm just guessing there though. Thank you Mikey, I found this tutorial fascinating 🥰 xx
I accidentally do this last year with a scarf for christmas I posted to a crochet group and it was really popular.
How would you make bigger for a blanket ?
thanks for sharing. you are an excellent tutor. I have a question, I feel, in my wool colour changes after a long gap. is there a minimum ( at least 2 stitches long? ) and a maximum length of the colour of the wool before it changes? what should be the criteria for me to choose the wool for planned pooling. pl help.
I am planning to try this. It was helpful. But how do you do hats and other garments? Do you have to sew strips together?
Thanks for the tutorial! I was curious if planned pooling would work in the round? Like for hats, gloves/mittens, and cup holders?
An H hook is probably a good starting place. It seems to be what works for most people.
what if you wanted to create like a throw? would you just pull out the desired length as long as you kept the color sequence the same? Love this idea
so far in all of the pulling groups that im in on facebook... throws and blankets dont work too well without making the strips and sewing them together. everyone has had theories for weeks, but no ones had any success with it
I would like to know this too. And have see garments with color pooling, like a hat or a poncho. How do they do that?
i have seen others saying that you do the same thing. crochet through the color sequence multiple times. and then chain 4 and turn using the moss stitch. ive seen it done for pillows and other items. but as for one big enough to work into an afghan, i dont know. i have yet to see that.

thanks for sharing. you are an excellent tutor. I have a question, I feel, in my wool colour changes after a long gap. probably that is the reason why it is difficult to get the pattern. is there a minimum ( at least 2 stitches long ) and a maximum length of colour of the wool before it changes? what should be the criteria for me to choose the wool for planned pooling. pl help.
can the yarn have just 2 colors instead of 3?
Thank you. This is my second time making something with pooling yarn. I was beginning a scarf and I couldn’t get it. I forgot moss stitch was being used for it.
ive been pooling like crazy for the past few weeks. making tons of scarves and table runners for christmas gifts. my question is, would the longer transitions work for something like a blanket? i've joined every facebook group for yarn pooling and have not seen someone successfully create a throw with any yarn without making long strips and attaching them together.
2:54 from what I’ve heard it’s not a set number for everyone it’s more you have to figure out and decide what you’ll do and stick to that one dividing number
I am trying to use Impeccable yarn in Neopolitan. It has a long brown and short cream a long pink and then a short cream again. Do you think this will work? And Please tell me what the color sequence on this yarn. Thanks, Carol
Does chain 2 at the end of each row count as a stitch? Thanks for your videos. They're great.
I believe so.
I love this planned pooling. I’ve been crocheting over 20 but have never done this, but I’m going to start. What about red heart super saver pooling yarn? Is it good?
can you show how to add a new ball working on this concept? Thanks. I really like the way you teach.
I thought this was super diffuclt to do and required multiple yarns to creat the look. Now knowing this could you make a few scarves and seam them together to form an afghan and maintain the look?
Can you actually use the stripes if you make something pretty long, like an afghan? Would it work but just have a large pattern?
Yes, you certainly can.
So question, will the pattern vary depending of length of each color? Or is pattern planned by crocheted?
i want to make a blanket with this tech is it possible? thx!!!
It's not Tartan or plaid, both of which are square. It's argyle, which has a distinctive diamond shape.
And I know I'm being a harpy but, OMG -- "oh, and by the way, it only works with the Moss stitch." ...? That should have been included in the beginning, in case some needs to check on tutorial and learn that stitch first.
Thanks for your constructive feedback.
The Crochet Crowd I'm sorry if I sound terrible, Mikey. I love your work and you are my Go-To Guy for crochet tutorials. No one can even hold a candle to you. But that's the reason I had to say something. We all want to see you maintain your own high standards. ;)
Marige OBrien You don't need to look up a tutorial. He shows you exactly how to do it: *(single crochet, chain 1, skip st) repeat from *. Moss stitch makes it sound harder than it actually is. Also, you can do it with v-stitch *(dc, ch1, dc) in same stitch, ch1, skip next st, repeat from *. (From memory, not 100%). It seems that any kind of stitch that involves stitching in the chain spaces of the previous row will be conducive to planned pooling. But, the more yarn your stitch takes up, the more compressed the pattern might be.
By the way, great job Mikey! Im glad you talked about what yarn to use, because I tried with yarn that changed too quickly and it didn't work. @thecrochetcrowd Also, I wonder, with that red, black, and gray yarn would it work similarly if you started with gray and ended with gray? Or would it alter the pattern? If so, I t seems like your tutorial could take it a step further and show how by alternating where you start in the repeating color way affects which color pools in the middle vs. which colors cross.

So, is the moss stitch just a sc, ch1? Didn't really understand how to do the moss stitch.
I was wondering if you can do a tutorial on the bernat blanket color pooling buffalo plaid yarn? Thank you.
I wanted to do it but the yarn is not sold here in Canada and none of the stores in the USA ship to Canada. I'm sorry.
Can I use a few of plain colours without a colour pooling yarn
well just watched this video. Fingers crossed I will get this. 6th time sould be the charm not the 3rd. hahaha....will write if I get it.
could you use this for a blanket if you wanted too or would it take to much yarn?
The colourway wouldn't make it possible. It's only for scarf size projects.
thank you I had someone ask me and I wasn't sure so I wanted to ask after watching this video
Megan Manzietti I found your better off using more of an ombre yarn for blankets and just naturally letting a transition either doing the stitch or single crochet were half double crochet otherwise you're going to be in a very complicated pattern
You are sorry for typo
Camden Smith
About color changing yarns: even in the same brand, same color, the color changes of different skeins can be different.
Does it work with hdc or only sc?
Does this only work with a 3 color colorway? I have some yarn with a colorway of color 1. Color 2. Color 1. Color 3. color 4. & repeat. Can this work? Tia
Is there a vid for pooling with Tunisian, tss?
I think I figured out why hers got "looser" as she went. I'm struggling with the same issue with mine because it gets heavier as it grows and has a tendency to pull the stitches a little looser. I keep having to frog a few rows and adjust my tension. I've never noticed how the weight of the project affects it before I was trying to keep the pattern looking perfect!
I am so frustrated. I purchased Red Heart Super Saver Pooling yarn in the color Haute. It has 6 colors in the sequence and does not produce "plaid". I have printed out and followed precisley the instructions for the cowl and hat, pictures using Haute but shows it has having only 4 colors. What do I need to buy to acheive the plaid.
Me, 2 hours into trying to attempt planned pooling for the first time:
"I think....something's.....happening??????"
why the shorter color change yarn don't work?
and I wanna know if we can plan pool with any other stitch
If you do a sample and track how many stitches are in each color, you can use this free online tool to calculate stitches for accurate pooling (although tension is still crucial!): www.plannedpooling.com/#{"nColors":2,"colorChoices":["#F1D1C3","#A6F4C0"],"numStitchesChoices":[19,10],"unitsWide":18}
