I've always had a love/hate relationship with variegated yarns. I love the color combos, but always hated the way the colors would bunch up in weird blocks. I get it now! Sadly, there was no TH-cam in the 1980's when I first learned to crochet. I seriously dragged a skein of Christmas yarn from that era - regular price $.97; sale price $.78 - out of my stash and used it to test the pooling technique. It actually worked with my decades old bargain yarn. Now I can't wait to try it with gorgeous, new yarn. Thanks so much!
Marilyn Tyner The tension is where she made the stitches "tighter" (to use less yarn) and "looser" (to use more yarn) or changing hooks so that the colors can be "placed" where they need to be "placed" to achieve the argyle patterning.
Eureka! Marly you nailed it! The explanation you give takes the mystery and frustration right out the window. Thank you for being such an excellent tutor♥
Ok.....praise where praise is due. You done it! A clear and logical explanation of planned pooling. Great job, I think there might be a lot of people that will get it now. Like you I am buried in swatches and it took about a week. But it works and it feels great when it does. Cudos Marly, wonderful video.👍
+Karin Brown thank you!!! I worked very hard on the preparation of this video. I hope others find it helpful. The planned pooling technique has been around since the first skein of variegated yarn was made. I simply took all the information available for both knitting and crochet and taught it in a way that I find easy to understand so that others can enjoy this technique. As I mentioned in the video notes, the facebook group is a great place to find more information. And if you are interested in a more technical/mathematical way of doing this check out a book by Laura Bryant, Artful Color Mindful Knits. She is amazing...and has a craftsy class on the subject as well.
OH MY GOSH! I'm very excited to try this challenging technique! It'll keep me engaged with every single stitch. I can see not getting bored with this at all. LOOOOOVE it.
Marly I want to thank you for showing how to do color pooling with the Red heart with love because I have never done it with that yarn and thanks again
Although I have been wanting to try planned pooling crochet, I have been very hesitant to give it a try. After watching your video I have decided to give it a try. Thank you for explaining it so well. Wish me luck!
What a great explanation! Makes me want to try it too once I have some free time. My question is, what do you do when you finished one skein? How do you ensure that the color combination stays the same?
I've worked on this all night, and I finally have a swatch that resembles something like argyle! I'm going to get this down if it kills me! 😆 I'm so glad that you showed your own multiple imperfect swatches toward the end, because now I don't feel so inadequate. If you can't get it perfect every time, then my newbie mess is more excusable. 😂 Thank you for all of these tutorials, Marly. You've made planned pooling easy to understand. Of course application is not the same as theory, but I've got plenty of time to practice.
@@rutharchana I wish I could, too. 😊 I joined a planned pooling group on Facebook. I rarely use the app, but I love that group. Lots of advice there, and lots of pictures! Someone suggested a yarn to me after I told her the problems I've had finding the colors I want, and it's perfect! It was worth joining just for that alone.
Thank you so much for the lovely and explanation of your hard work and brilliant idea that you show us to do a different pattern that we've never ever known, thanks once again great job 😊 xoxo
I finally understand and got it to work! I was having such a hard time understanding which previous stitch I was supposed to be looking at. Thank you so much, you're a great teacher!! 😀😀
I couldn't make a decent argyle pooling before. Your tutorial works because you explain the mechanics of yarn pooling. Once you understand whats really happening, then you can do it in other yarns also. When you don't understand, it is a matter of chance. Thanks for your video and your super clear explanation. Will recommend your video to anyone trying to do the argyle pooling!
I spent a whole day trying to get some pooling to happen and I was just so frustrated. At the end of the day I happened across your ten secrets video which really made me get my hopes up. I still didn't get any planned pooling action. Today I found this video and I have FINALLY gotten this to work after trying three different types of yarn. I am so freakin happy right now! I love your clear directions, all the tips were useful for me and the passion that you have for this is really motivating! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!
That is simply FANTASTIC!!!! Check out some of the other planned pooling videos I did here on the channel. Each one explains a little bit more and by the end you will be a PRO! ;)
More than 50 years ago, I accidentally knitted an argyle scarf using a 1×1 rib. I was blown away. It wasn't until decades later that I found out planned pooling existed. Haven't tried it since.
I've had a hard time getting this to work for me. Thank you so much Marley Bird. I had to keep watching over and over and taking it a loose. I finally got it.
So far this is the best pattern and information that I have found for the planned pooling. You even provided a link, to be able to create my own pattern based on my yarn colors. Thank you so much for all of this information and tutorial.
I am making a headband with the redheart bright mix super saver, using a G/6 - 4.25mm boyle crochet hook, and I chained 9 starting with 1/2 color of the purple, first row double crochet into the third chain from hook, double crochet all 6 spaces, chain 1, second row single crochets into each space, chain 1, then repeat until enough rows are done to fit any size head. the pattern is there for the tiny color squares showing diagonal and the same look repeats every 8th row. It is so cool looking! :D
This video was really helpful. Thank you! I watched about 4 other videos on yarn pooling, kept trying and almost gave up. When I watched this, it worked the first time I tried it.
Thank you so much for the video and explanation. Of all the videos that I have watched, yours is the best. Honestly, after watching it, I know what I want to do and how to do it. Thanks again.
Great explanation Marly! Thank you for working so hard at these videos.... You are and inspiration for those of us who would like to try something new!! :)
Oh Marly Bird!!! I finally did it!!! I used the same yarn (Delightful) and it took me 2 skeins to make a scarf. I usually keep hats and scarves in my car and give them away when I see cold people walking around Tulsa... But, this was so hard for me to figure out, I think I am going to keep it! Ha. I watched this video over and over and over. For everyone reading this - it is really easy once you get going. The hardest part for me was not seeing it happen fast enough and trusting myself that it will! Thank you so much for this video!!! It is really the best one for planned pooling!
Marly , I had never herd or have seen this style or crochet. Thank You for teaching me something new and fantastic! I will be giving this a try. I really love your videos they inspire me so much to make things or give new things to try for myself and my family! Thank You!!!
love your videos i learned knitting and some crochet stitches that i didnt know i didnt even know about planned pooling until i saw you 10 days giveaway
Awesome video! Such a good rundown of how to do planned pooling. I have watched a few other videos (even one from my favorite channel) and it just didn't work out. I am about to start my 3rd attempt after watching your video and I believe with your tips I will be successful! Thank you so much!
you're such a great teacher ... im a visual learner and for what i learned with you wow your amazing i will buy RedHeart yarns for sure , why? because i love all the colors you used on the tutorials videos..thank you !!!!
I can't wait to do this! I have 4 projects going... I have to seem "my first sweater" and I just began "my first socks." Along with 2 others. Is 5 too many WIPS? nah... Marly you are my favorite :)
Do you have a tutorial for your kimono crochet pattern. I wanted you to know that your tutorials are wonderful. You have a way of breaking things down, that makes it easier to understand, and makes me want to crochet and knit......
I absolutely crochet/knit using your tutorials but I also find myself just watching them because I just enjoy them. I recently got back into planned pooling and I’m having a hard time finding yarn for it. Any tips?
I try this technique with the Red Heart "With Love" Plum Jam. It turn out very well and I will made a beautifull bag for my crochet stuff. I try to send you some pictures but I don't know how to do it.
I've been doing my swatches for 3 days now. And I think its finally turning out. I've changed my hook twice and I think I need to do it one one time. But I its coming along. I'm using the lemon drop color yarn from red heart.
Awesome! Maybe I can get it to work this time! I can zig zag with the best of them, and I like that a lot, but I want to vary my width. Thanks for the great tutorial.
Dear Marly. I just love the new Pooling!!! Thankyou so much! But there is a "but"! I am from South Africa, have tried before to order Red Heart Yarn to be shipped to S.A, but is seems that South Africa are not on their shipping list? Do you have any suggestion? I would love to order this yarn.

I found 3 skiens of red heart Antique on a roll back of $2.50, and sadly only 1 skien of Zebra. I have one row of foundation and one row of scales to complete my 2 Christmas mermaid tail, and my next Christmas (fingers crossed) will be a lovely scarf! Thank you bunches for the video and your great detail in explanation. mmmwah mmmwah
Awesome! Mine is finally looking like something lol. Thank you so much Marly Bird!!!!! Christmas right around the corner too I better get cracking lol.
If you want to make a blanket, how many color sequences do you have to go through since you aren't counting stitches? Thank you for this video! It's great!
great video! how do you determine the width of your piece? must you crochet your first row thru the entire color sequence? what do you do if you want a scarf 8" wide but your color sequence is much longer? i hope you can help! thank you!

+hikkchik that's nice of you to say. Thank you.
I would love to see more tutorials on planned pooling and Tunisian crochet. Thank you Marly for your enthusiasm. It's contagious.
i love this video, everyone talked 'tension' but nobody showed how ..... THANK YOU!
Marilyn Tyner The tension is where she made the stitches "tighter" (to use less yarn) and "looser" (to use more yarn) or changing hooks so that the colors can be "placed" where they need to be "placed" to achieve the argyle patterning.
This was the best of all the yarn pooling videos that I have seen!!! Thank you. 👏🌟
I thought crochet was to relax 😂😂😂I would literally go insane doing this
You know what they say... We neva gone survive unless we get a little crazy...
I am going insane I've been trying and frogging for 6 hours now 😡
Eureka! Marly you nailed it! The explanation you give takes the mystery and frustration right out the window. Thank you for being such an excellent tutor♥
Best video I've seen--you actually show HOW to adjust!!!
Thank you!

Maintaining the correct Placement of stitch!!! Thank You!!!

Yes. There is a new video teaching how to do this.

+Diane R thank you so very much.
Oh my goodness. Ive been practicing planned pooling for 2 days and my last "swatch" turned out ok. I am so excited to try your video
Hi. How many colours did you have in your yarn. Please
I've been doing my swatches for 3 days now. And I think its finally turning out. I've changed my hook twice and I think I need to do it one one time. But I its coming along. I'm using the lemon drop color yarn from red heart.
I love this! I have planned pooled before. It didn't "argyle* but the pattern was very cool!!
Thank you Marly for an excellent tutorial 🎉I am going to give this a try, as it looks like so much fun 😊
Hi Marcy thanks for beautiful tutorial.I have question how many chains should I take for throw?I hope u guide me.Thanks again.💐🌺🌹
Thank you so much for your detailed explanation on yarn pooling!
Simple as wonderful explanation🌸
I got it, thanks!
Audubon, NY
I am really excited about trying the argyle, hopefully it will work. Your directions are wonderful and helpful. 😁
Wonderful!!! Quick question please. Are you doing the moss stitch in every other chain after the foundation row?? Thank you 😊
Thank you, Iam going to give a try again with a smaller crochet hook.
Are there any wool/wool blends variegated yarns suitable for planned pooling??
Change hooks??! You got me hooked on this concept thank you!
Awesome! Maybe I can get it to work this time! I can zig zag with the best of them, and I like that a lot, but I want to vary my width. Thanks for the great tutorial.

Hi I Marly...I'm still a pooling Virgin hahaha, red heart is not readily available in Australia, though I'm sure some of our yarns would work. I love this! Hopefully I am talented enough to pull it off!! Thanks for sharing! You are the best!!
Your tutorials are a great inspiration!
oh it's gorgeous - if you wanted to make it bigger for like a blanket- would you just add more color repeats? like 2-3 instead of one?
Yes
Great teaching just love the challenge thank you soooo much Mary NZ
Simply amazing… can’t wait to try!
Thank you for the wonderful tutorial! I wonder about that too stiff G hook swatch; do you think killing (i.e. steaming) it would help the texture? It would still be thick, but at least drapey. Hmmm.
I actually have been using an I and J hook for my more recent pooling projects. I like the drape much better. Before you block your acrylic fabric with steam...try using a larger hook.
Thank you! I have tried and tried and been unsuccessful so far. I will try again after this video. :)
+Wendy Jeffreys I believe in you. Have patience and it will come :)
Thank you! :)
WOW. I was gonna do a scarf for christmas but its too late in the game since I need to work quickly but Im excited to try this in January. Thanks so much for the tutorial. :D

By Jove I might actually be able to do this! I've been struggling and getting super frustrated. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I think I'm starting to understand what you are trying to teach all your viewers I will let u know how I make out 😊

Thank you, thank you! This video is fantastic. I have watched many videos on the pooling technique, but yours is by far the most informative and complete. Rachael Ray is related to her, right? Or is it just me? Thanks for the tutorial. I'm inspired.
