  • Using a 16" barrel AR15, shooting the 5.56mm NATO M193 55 gr FMJ at 200 yards. Primary objective is hitting a 1/4" steel plate at 200 yards and getting a pass through and into ballistic gel.
    Ammo is military surplus 5.56mm, Lake City 2005 production date. Rifle is a Bushmaster lower receiver, Rock River Arms upper with 16" barrel, 1:9 twist. I'm using an EoTech 516, no magnification. Please note.....the EoTech had been setup for POV shooting with the camcorder. It is usually moved a tad bit forward on the rail. For some reason, the trolls want to make a big deal out of it.
    Filmed with two Sony HD AVCHD camcorders; HDR-CX560 recorded at 28 mbps 60p and HDR-CX110 at 24 mbps 30p. Edited using Sony Vegas Pro 12, MP4, 30p, 16 mbps. The opening segment was recorded with a GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition at 1080p; camera mounted to the rifle using the roll bar mount.
    Filmed on private property with ample hills and trees for a backstop. No inhabitants downrange for at least 2 miles. Any shots off target and/or pass throughs traveled less than 100 feet behind the target setup.

    can you maybe borrow it from someone?
    it would be really interesting to see penetration and damage comparison of the 5,56x45, 5,45x39 and 7,62x39 at the same range with identical conditions
    that is probably one of the most controversial topics of youtube gun community :)

    When i was in basic training, during our intro to the m16a2 our drill instructor placed the butt of the rifle on his testicles, squeezed the trigger while it was pointed at a steel ammo can...i was impressed with the results. Low recoil and the back of that ammo can was absolutely mangled. 5.56 is more than enough to get the jobe done.

      RyanBurkman182 I realize that your post is 2 years old of course but, how did your build come out? I want to do a precision rifle build this year around a Faxon 20” heavy profile fluted 416R barrel.

    Secondly, I'm surprised the 5.56 rd penetrated the steel AND went all the way through the ballistic gel.

    Well I've been stocking up on M855 exclusively , because it was my hope that it would take out the bad guy if he hid behind something like a car door. But based on your test, the m193 will do just that, so I'll be stocking up on the 193 as well. Thank you, excellent info as always

      A car door offers no protection. a 22lr flies through it. I learned a lot about what bullets do to a car when my cousin and I shot a car up at a junk yard in trade for an old cj wrangler, junk but the body was good. A 223 went through the entire car front to back, side to side. most 223 fmj's even punched into certain parts of the block, which was a 4 banger, but still, it would kill the motor after 10 shots for sure and this was a Toyota corolla we shot up. just shows how full of shit Hollywood is when they have movies where a car takes hundreds of rounds and yet the driver is not hit unless it's through the window, which is still bs, lol.

      Cool stuff, not all cars are equal. 5.45 was more impressive cause its skinny and slipped through what blew my mind in my non scientific tests imho I dont mind small rounds and neither does NATO or Russians.

    That xm193 is cooking out of the 20" barrel. That little bit of extra velocity will sometimes allow it to penetrate 1/4" hardened steel plate.

    That was excellent. I was wondering if you would do this test with a 300 Blackout, 16" barrel using 110gr - 125gr supersonic ammunition. I am fully vested in the blackout but since I live in northern Illinois, I have to drive 3-5 hours to reach a range where I can shoot past 75 yards. I enjoy the work you do here on the channel.

      I don't own a 300 Blackout.

    • @jasonlewis995
      @jasonlewis995 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The best barrel length for 300 aac is 8.5 inches. All the powder is burned off in that distance where a 556 needs the 16 + inches to get peak velocity. 16" is just extra weight while the accuracy remains the same (up to the shooter) I haven't seen steel core 300 like the xm193 so I'd suspect it would shatter since it's moving slower (2000 fps) and would not get the penetration the xm193 can.

    • @dELTA13579111315
      @dELTA13579111315 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      7.62×39 has more energy than typical 5.56 beyond something like 400 or 500 yards, but is also less accurate at that distance because the 7.62 bullets tend to lose stability around then while 5.56 doesn't. Closer than that, they're similar enough in kinetic energy that bullet design is probably more important than the caliber, but that's just my opinion and I don't actually know. Personally I own an Ak47 and not an AR15 yet, I just prefer .30 caliber guns over .22 caliber because they're more fun to shoot and I like the design of the AK platform more.

    • @jacobcombs1106
      @jacobcombs1106 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dELTA13579111315 the issue with the 7.62 is that at the 100-300 meter range where most people engage at it penetrates soft targets too rapidly leaving a narrow wound channel and suffering lower lethality than the 5.56 which yaws and fragments in that window causing a larger wound channel and improved lethality.

    • @jacobcombs1106
      @jacobcombs1106 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dELTA13579111315 oh unless you have a short barrel, like the M4s 16.5 inch barrel, then the reduced muzzle velocity reduces the likelihood of yawing and fragmenting reducing the lethality of the 5.56.

    • @jacobcombs1106
      @jacobcombs1106 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Frank The Tank hydrostatic shock dmaage is a myth. The increased velocities and improved ballistics of longer barrels is physics
      www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=ndiastorage.blob.core.usgovcloudapi.net/ndia/2010/armament/WednesdayCumberlandPhilipDater.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwjv8LTCtq7pAhUEBs0KHdY-BakQFjANegQIAhAB&usg=AOvVaw27Iz9sEaD4-d8B-LdEhuJj&cshid=1589290105141
      And that muzzel velocity is tied to yawing and fragmenting of the cannelure that is the trademark of the 5.56 NATO round vs the normal yawing in soft tissue that all spitzer shaped rounds will do.
      As a result the shorter barreled M16s/M4s who generate less muzzle velocity progressively generate less and less yawing and fragmenting of the cannelure than the longer barrels, generating smaller wound channels than the longer barrels and being less lethal at comparable distances. Additionally the reduced velocity reduces the range they are most lethal at as compared to the longer barrels.
      Its not a myth, though saying the 16inch barrel doesn't yaw at all is a gross simplification on my part being more precise was not necessary in a youtube comment.
      The importance of this particular kind of yawing and fragmenting in 5.56 nato rounds also results in a reduced lethality for all barrel lengths at close ranges.
      Also shorter barrels are louder and produce more muzzle flash.
      The 20inch barrel is the optimum barrel length for the 5.56 nato round, the .223 Remington is different and I imagine barrel length is less important to it for a number of reasons but I don't know anywhere close to as much about it as I do the 5.56 Nato.

      @Frank The Tank I do agree that the 5.56 does outclass the 7.62 against soft targets. But the 7.62 has slightly better penetration than the 5.56 at most ranges.

    The almost 50 year old M193 cartridge continues to impress. My tests comparing it to the M855 cartridge have shown the M193 to actually have MORE penetrating ability despite the 'penetrating' tip of the M855.
    The only thing good about the M855 is that it weighs 62 grains and makes a good practice round for those of us with 1x7 twist. Those with 1x9 twist will be very well served with the old 55 grain M193.

    Will the 2 nato rounds go through 1/2 inch hot rolled steel or (2) 1/4 inch plates at close or long ranges?

    Is this more or less penetration that a hollow point. You should do the same test with one of each kind of tip. Including Armour piercing.
