Zoom PodTrak P4 - Line Out port? Yes via the headphone-in ports! (UPDATE: See follow-up video!)

  • UPDATE: I created a new follow-up video to the original one. The new video shows how you can use a simple smartphone camera for filming and capturing great audio using the PodTrak P4. For all the Joe Rogan video podcaster wannabees out there with only a smartphone for a camera, check out this new content, link here:
    • Zoom PodTrak P4 - Line...
    The Zoom PodTrak P4 does not officially have a "Line Out" port, such as what the Zoom H6 recorder has, etc. However, in this video, I'm demonstrating that the various headphone-in ports can effectively be used as a line-out port which is very useful for sending an audio signal directly to another source, such as a camera for filming or to another backup recording device. In this video, I'm using both a wired 3.5mm AUX cable plus the Rode Wireless Go lav mic system to send the same audio signal directly from the PodTrak P4 into the camera for redundant audio backup. Plus I'm demonstrating using the Tascam DR-05X as an additional redundant audio backup source using the headphone-in port on the PodTrak P4. Good stuff! NOTE: Please excuse the audio portion while using the Rode Wireless Go mic, I had the gain settings too high so my voice is clipping and I wasn't paying attention at the time. In hindsight, I realize now partly the reason why this clipping problem can happen inadvertently is because if I have the headphone-in volume dial set too high for audio monitoring on my headphones, this too will INCREASE THE GAIN volume of my speaking voice on the PodTrak P4. So in effect, it's possible to increase the gain volume either by turning up the primary gain dials for channels 1, 2, 3, 4 (on top of P4) as well as turning up the headphone volume at bottom of the PodTrak P4. Yes, you heard that correctly...this is not a typo. So in other words, be careful of how high your headphone-in volume is because this will affect your recording gain level, if you are using the headphone-in port as a line out port. UPDATE: When I switched over to the Rode Wireless Go lav mic, I carelessly forgot to lower the gain level, hence the audio probably sounds clipped.

    Of particular interest that I found surprising. When using the headphone-in port on the PodTrak P4 as a line out port and connected to the camera for real time audio feed (or connected to the Tascam recorder for redundant backup recording), it's possible to adjust my speaking gain volume using the headphone-in volume knob, in addition to the primary gain dial knob on channel 1 (or 2, 3, 4). Normally I would use the primary gain dial knob on say Channel 1, 2, 3, or 4. But the headphone-in volume dial on the bottom of the PodTrak also works for gain adjustment. That was an unexpected pleasant surprise.

    On the Zoom PodTrak P4, the headphone-in ports can effectively be used as "Line Out" port. This is useful for many reasons. I am demonstrating this using a wired 3.5mm AUX cable going into my Canon 90D DSLR camera, plus using the Rode Wireless Go lav mic system. Plus using a Tascam handy recorder as well.

    Thank you so much Casey. I’m a podcaster but want to start recording my podcast recording on video too. I use the podtrak P4 with my new Sony a73 video camera. I didn’t want to buy a new xlr adapter for the camera! Plus I didn’t want to use the sd card memory on my podtrak. So helpful! Tell me if I need anything else? The aux cord….is that a tssr cord with 3 black lines? Any tips would help a lot!

    So I think that you have solved the 44.1khz record limit problem with these podtrak recorders. Just pass through to any external recorder, or camera. That is assuming the headphone jacks are pre-DAC in the circuit - should be! Now I wonder if the USB is also a pass-thru and only the recorder itself is limited to 44.1?? That would be weird. Has anybody checked to see if they can record @48Khz in a DAW?
    QUESTION just to verify - the headphones have some selectability in the BUS, including USB y/n and phone call mix-minus, is that correct?

      @@STARSTATUSCHRIS Ideally, you really want to monitor the audio via a headphone-port directly from the camera, because that's the actual audio going into the camera. However, if you say your camera doesn't have a headphone-in port, I understand. I suggest and recommend for you to buy and use an external field monitor that has a headphone-in port. Using an external monitor will provide 2 fold benefits...a much larger 5.5" (or larger) screen to better view the image quality, plus the monitor I'm using has a built-in headphone port at the bottom to insert headphones into. The monitor I use is the FeelWorld F6 Plus model, which offers a headphone-port to monitor the actual audio going into the camera which is ideal for accuracy. Plus that particular monitor is the only one I can find that has a super useful 5Volt USB-C port (at the bottom) so I can power the monitor for many hours continuously via an external rechargeable battery pack, such as an Anker or RAVPower 20,000 mAh battery. Here is what I use which I recommend, this sometimes goes on sale from $189 to $140: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1556369-REG/feelworld_f6plus_f6_plus_5_5_4k.html?sts=pi&pim=Y I'm only giving you this much detailed info cuz you wrote that I'm the "Greatest of All Time" haha! • @caseyonlocation8257
      @caseyonlocation8257  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Howdy Mark. I should first qualify that the PodTrak P4 does not officially have a "Line Out" port, such as what the Zoom H6 recorder has. I was simply doing an experiment to prove that the bottom headphone ports at the bottom of the PodTrak P4 can essentially be used as a Line Out port, although some say it's not ideal nor would offer the best sound quality due to the preamps from the headphone ports. All those points are probably accurate. That said, just use the Rode Wireless Go the same way I demonstrated in the video. In my video, I seem to recall the audio is clipped when I switched to the Rode Wireless Go because I had the gain level set to maximum when I should have reduced to either medium or lowest gain level. So that was my fault for not accurately monitoring the decibel scale and gain level. I'm considering re-doing this entire video over again and to have the correct levels setting on the Rode Wireless Go receiver to the medium or low setting and that would remedy the clipped audio you heard from this particular video. Thanks for watching and thanks for your nice compliment. Also thanks for liking and SUBSCRIBING to my channel if you did so!

      Howdy Yudha. Hmm, are you asking if it's possible to use a smartphone for filming instead of a DSLR type camera? And to have the smartphone connected to the PodTrak P4 for audio transfer using either a wired AUX cable or the Rode Wireless Go wireless mic system? If so, I've never tried that. Using a phone nowadays has way too many limitations, including no 3.5mm AUX port, nor the ability to manually change the audio recording level, etc. I suppose it's possible though, if you have the right adapters cables, but I really can't say for sure. Even if this were possible, it would not be ideal. If I were you, I'd get a simple camera with a built-in microphone-in port and that would do the trick. Hi again. I did a quick test today. I was able to use my Samsung smartphone for filming myself while connected into the PodTrak P4 using the Rode SC9 3.5 to 3.5 TRRS to TRRS smartphone cable with Channel 3 remote smartphone input enabled. I had the Audio Technica XLR microphone in Channel 1 and it was recording my voice into the PodTrak P4, and my voice was also at the same time getting recorded into my smartphone filming me. The smartphone was filming and recording my voice even though I didn't have the record button pressed on for the PodTrak P4, so that would be good for doing a live stream, which doesn't necessarily need to be audio recorded. The point is that the smartphone will film and record the audio whether or not the PodTrak P4 has the record button enabled for recording. I'm not sure if all that description made sense to you since you don't have a PodTrak P4. I think I can make a simple video about this. Anyway, this is just an update.

      @caseyonlocation8257  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Dan, thanks for watching the video and asking the question. Honestly, although the headphone port "sort of works" as a line out port, it's not ideal for the "best" audio quality. With that said first, let's try to diagnose your issue. First off, does your Canon R800 camcorder allow for manual audio recording level adjustments? Or not? Maybe the default camera audio level is set too high and you need to go into the camera menu to lower it. I would try that first. Pretty much EVERYONE on TH-cam who uses a Canon camera will tell you that the internal audio preamp on a Canon camera is terrible, hence it's important to reduce the audio recording level (I have a separate video about that by the way). Also, do you have another camera with video capability that you can test this with? Maybe the issue only exists for that particular R800 camera but might work fine with another camera. Please like and subscribe to my channel as I'm trying to grow my channel!

Page 113 of the online manual is about the only section that talks about audio but unfortunately it's not for changing the internal audio level. From what I can gather, changing a Canon camera's internal audio recording level is an advanced function that is available on certain models, but not others. For example, all 3 of my Canon cameras offer the ability to change internal recording level (eg: Canon Vixia G60 camcorder, Canon 90D, Canon M50). But it doesn't appear that your R800 model can do that based on glancing over the online manual. That's not good, in fact it's really not good because that means you are not able to dial in the audio level as a potential remedy to fix your audio issue. I'm not saying that is definitively the answer to your problem, but it's certainly a key variable for trouble shooting your issue. The ability to change the camera's internal audio recording level is huuuuge, it's very important for obtaining the right audio. Here is the online manual link, the audio section is on page 113: gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/0/0300025910/03/vixiahfr80-82-800-im3-en.pdf Check out my other video on how to change a Canon camera's internal audio recording level for why it's important, link here: th-cam.com/video/xXxnt8Fu1lg/w-d-xo.html ALSO: Check out the manual for my Canon Vixia G60 camcorder, on page 73 there are instructions for "Adjusting the audio recording level". However, for your own R800 camcorder, I was not able to find the same audio function in the manual unless I overlooked it. Go to page 73 in this manual to see what I'm referring to: gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/1/0300035051/04/vixiahfg60-im4-en.pdf

    Casey, I have access to a P4 and would like to try and use it for a live podcast event. Would you be able to use these headphone Jack's with 3.5mm to 1/4 cables to plug into a PA system so that I can record the audio AND project our audio to the crowd with the same device using multiple mics?

    Can the usb-c use as line out too?

    • @caseyonlocation8257
      @caseyonlocation8257  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't know. The USB-C port(s) are meant for connecting to a computer or for power. There are already 4 headphone-in ports at the bottom of the P4 that can effectively be used as a "line out" port. Why would there be a need for the USB-C port to be used as a line out port as well, assuming if it's possible? Unless you meant if the USB-C port can be used as an audio interface connected to a laptop/computer? If so, the answer is yes. But your question is not entirely clear.

      @ Okay that makes sense. I don't use any Apple products whatsoever cuz I'm a Windows and Androids guy for many years. So I don't have an iPad to test your question. But it sounds like it's plausible to plug in a USB-C to USB-C cable from the P4 to your iPad and hopefully your iPad will recognize the P4 as an external hard drive to be able to transfer audio files back and forth, or to do live streaming. From my limited experience with Apple products in the past, Apple stuff don't care to recognize any other external devices unless it's another Apple device. I find that downright frustrating to the point that I refuse to use any Apple products cuz it can't even do simple basic things that any Windows or Android devices can do for many years. Okay, as you can see, I can keep ranting on and on about Apple products...I really can, haha. But bottom line, I don't know the answer to your question. I think it's possible, but on the other hand, your iPad may simply ignore and refuse to recognize the PodTrak P4 as an external device. If so, I wouldn't be surprised. Okay, I better stop cuz this will cause me to continue ranting about Apple products again, LOL! I really dislike anything Apple...well except AAPL stock, that I do like...but that's all. I first bought AAPL stock some 30 years ago when it was trading in the gutter around 10 dollars a share cuz they almost went out of business at one point. Okay, I digress...
