    The amount of electricity generated by the UK’s gas and coal power plants fell by 20% last year 2023, with consumption of fossil fuels at its lowest level since 1957. UK’s gas power plants last year generated 31% of the UK’s electricity, or 98 terawatt hours (TWh), according to a report by the industry journal Carbon Brief, while the UK’s last remaining coal plant produced enough electricity to meet just 1% of the UK’s power demand with renewables at a record 42%.

      In my country, to replace all the oil needed by transportation daily, we need to add about 2.5 million Mwatts to the grid daily. I see no new generators being built, no new power corridors, no expansion of distribution sub stations.

      @@drewthompson7457 electricity is reducing but that was an ideological strategic choice from the present right wing government back in 2010 to protect big oil and gas who have made substantial profits on the back of it. It will only change with a change of government that is more in tune with netzero, which is expected at the next election. They stopped on shore wind farms for ideological reasons and delayed nuclear station construction, which if they had maintained the original 2010 netzero strategy and pace, would have eliminated the reliance on imported gas which ultimately drove the increase in electricity prices. However off peak electricity is cheap, and petrol has gone up 8 pence this year, so is significantly more expensive than running the Ev has long as you have a home charger. The Ev expansion has stalled because of this government’s policies, lack of incentives, too slow rollout of infrastructure and protection of big oil, because they are too frightened of their right wing.

    Europe data doesn't include UK. In the last few days fossil fuel only contributed to electricity generation in UK to provide spinning energy to ensure frequency stabilisation. CCGT was less than 1 GW, we burnt a tiny bit of coal at a power station that is about to close down. (Guess it is easier to burn it than take it away later?) French built nuclear in the 1950s because General de Gaule didn't trust the middle east for security of supply for oil. They continued to build and do so today. In the UK it is seen as insurance for the winter anti cyclones that can sit over the UK for weeks. Viz 1963 when we had some 13 weeks of severe cold, no respite and little wind. Meanwhile we build wind farms in a wider circle ever further from shore to help prevent the same problem and build HVDC cables between nations across the North Sea. Oh and in the last few days some of us have been paid to take power off the grid to reduce constraint payments. And finally, Europe and the UK do make things, whilst the Chinese make mass market cheap stuff, We in Europe (including the UK) build trains, aeroplanes, boats, cars, construction products and provide the designs for those things like iPhones (ARM chips)

      In the UK, we get a lot of wind in winter, so a mix of solar and wind would probably do quite well.
      Wind power seems to be stronger in winter and at nighttime when solar isn't that great, so both could complement each other throughout the year for more consistent energy.
      Still, I think the issue isn't renewable energy but having an energy buffer, which means having more energy storage.

    There is a thing about too much solar and wind, it can break the grid when it pushes to much energy into the grid when there is too little demand, and too little energy when there is much demand. It makes it hard to balance the grid and keep the frequency at 50 Hz. Also, in Scandinavia we must make sure there is power in the cold and dark winter of the north when the sun only makes it over the Horizon a couple of hours a day. We need nuclear to keep people from freezing to death. It can be colder than -20C for weeks in the dark of winter when there is snow on the solar panels. I would rather have 100% nuclear because wind and solar makes the grid much more complex and expensive.

    The fact is the Earth has 414 ppm or 0.004% carbon in the atmosphere and this number is historically very low and IF
    we go as low as 200 ppm or 0.002% everything will start to be deleted, photosynthesis works with at least 200+ppm if it goes lower all life on earth will wither away.
    If CO2 levels were to drop significantly below around 400 ppm to at or below 200 ppm photosynthesis-the process by which plants convert carbon dioxide and sunlight into energy-would become severely limited. This would have cascading effects on the entire ecosystem, leading to widespread disruption and potentially catastrophic consequences for life on Earth.
    Mass famine and the end of all life on Earth.

    Sam, I’ve said it before in the comments in your channel, 760 watts per kg is still 6x less power per kg than jet fuel, even when calculating in the 30% thermal efficiency of a jet engine vs 80% efficiency for electric. Even with 760 watt hour per kg, you will not be seeing long haul flights.

  • @tdragon87
    @tdragon87 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I'm all for electric. But at 760w per Kg is still way to low for any real commercial plane. Gas has roughly 13,16x higher energy density. And with the efficiency of electric motors getting closer and closer to the 100% number, I agree, the only thing that will make a difference is energy density, but unfortunately that is almost impossible to come anywhere close to fossil fuel. You can get an airplane with high efficiency, aka low wh/km, but once you get close to the 0/100 mark, you're done with that, you need pure energy. Doesn't matter how you get it, might even be nuclear, but batteries are not going to get a 747 across the Atlantic, ever.
